While it wouldn't be accurate to say that Vythri's creation was a mistake, by any means, his soul and personality are regarded as a mere side-effect of the animation of his flesh. After all, he is not the intended owner of his own body. Created as a back-up in case Hemlock's body fails, Vythri's existence is kept secret from other dragons in the clan.

Hidden in a darkened room, Vythri listens to the clan go about their daily lives. Even so, he knows better than to long for what they have.

As soon as Vidalia enters his holding den, he knows she isn't from this lair. He hasn't heard her voice before, for one. But stranger still, she looks at him directly, instead of staring through him. As she makes idle talk, a sensation Vythri has never felt before wells up in his chest. He does his best to quell it, and to turn down Vidalia's offers of freedom. She doesn't know how determined Magisa can be. She hasn't seen the other subjects dragged back, eyes glazed over.

But Vidalia will not be deterred, and after a few visits, Vythri puts a name to his new emotion: hope.
