The first assignment Vega ever received came when she looked at her mother's crystal ball. The scratchy voice caught her off guard for a split second, but she had already learned of the Otherworldly Being, and soon understood what was happening.

"Go to the Scarred Wastelands and find the Walled City. You are needed there."

She had packed up and left her home the next morning, and with only a vague idea of where she was going, set off. It wasn't a long journey, she quickly saw massive walls on the horizon, and after putting on her glasses, she could see the outlines of towers within.

She reached the city at nightfall, and landed just outside of the walls to wait for further instructions. She heard movement from behind her, and spun around to see a strange lizard crawling out of a crack in the wall. It came towards her with no fear, and allowed itself to be picked up by her. It opened its mouth, and soon the scratchy voice come out.

"This is how I will be contacting you from now on. Now, stay here, and speak to the first Imperial you see."

The lizard wiggled out of her grasp, and found a space on her shoulder to rest. She sat down, careful to not let it slip off, and watched the sky. It was hard to see with how dark it was, and her glasses barely helped. After waiting for at least an hour, she saw a large silhouette in the air coming towards the city. She prepared to take off, but the silhouette suddenly came barreling towards the ground.

The Imperial hit the ground head first just ten feet from her. He had glasses, which were currently halfway off his face, and a pair of golden horns in front of his sparkling black antlers. He cracked his yellow eyes open, showing that he was born in Light territory. Blood was rushing out of the left side of his head, and Vega was now thankful that it was too dark to make out the details.

"Are you okay?" she asked him. "That was quite the fall, what were you doing? Do you live here?" That would make sense, why else would someone be out flying at this time? Apart from instructions by a strange being, that is.

"Uh, probably?" he said. "Sorry, I'm having trouble remembering. Is that a lizard?" He pointed to her shoulder.

"Yeah, it's my...pet. I'm Vega, do you remember your name?" she asked. She offered a hand, and he took it, slowly picking himself up.

"Irga," he said. He straightened his glasses and looked at the lizard, "Does your pet have a name?"

"No, I just now found it," she said. "We should get inside the city, maybe they'll know what's going on with you. Can you still fly?"

Irga nodded, and together the pair entered Opovder.

. . .

The first thing Vega noticed when she woke up the next morning was that she no longer needed her glasses. This must be the reward to talking to Irga, she thought. She and the Imperial had slept in a small inn, whose owner claimed to have never seen him (The owner also made a comment on his head injury, which she'd almost forgotten about. She was able to get it cleaned up and bandaged, and it didn't look like it would scar).

They'd shared a room (with separate beds, of course) and it looked like Irga was still asleep. Vega glanced over to her nightstand, where the lizard and her (now useless) glasses laid. The lizard suddenly shot up, and spoke.

"Recover his memory."

The lizard shut its mouth, and went back to laying down. The Skydancer sat up and got out of bed, eyes focused its sleeping body. She definitely had a strange 'pet'.

"Did... did your lizard just talk?" Irga's question made her spin around, and instantly her mind was racing. Normal dragons shouldn't be able to hear it, so obviously he isn't normal. Is he part of the family? No, there aren't any Imperials yet. So he must already be able to contact it, right?

"What did the voice sound like?" she asked. There was no way to deny what he heard and, most likely, saw, but by asking him what it sounded like, she could cross out one possibility.

"A really angry drill sergeant. It sounds super familiar, but I can't quite place it," he said. Since the voice was different, he heard it with his own ears, and wasn't somehow reading Vega's mind. So he had made contact with the Being before, but lost his memory. That would make things much easier to explain later on.

"I will explain all of this, I promise, but it will be so much easier once your memory is back," she said. Now everything hinged on whether or not he would trust her.

Irga looked hesitant for a moment, "Alright, let's go," he said. "You are the only person I currently know, and General Skink over there seems to want my memory back, too." 'General Skink' looked incredibly offended to being called that, and climbed on Vega's shoulder with a glare.

"I guess our first stop is a doctor," Vega said. "There has to be someone in this town who can help, right?"

. . .

Finding an actual doctor was much easier said than done. After a bit of asking around, they ended up with two choices: one, a massive tower that people called the Spire, home to the local geniuses, or two, a place known only as the lab, where all of the scientists worked. After a bit of consideration, they decided on the lab.

As they approached the building, muffled yelling could be heard from inside. Vega cracked open the door just a bit, and they pair could hear what was being said.

"-responsibilities, Fingunt!" someone, most likely female, yelled. "I'd like to ignore everything our family does, too, but that's not possible, is it? Quit wasting your time here, Elderberry and Morada are able to get their work done, but for some reason it seems like you can't! And who gets the blame for that? Me!"

"Kiudein-" someone else, presumably 'Fingunt', said.

"No, I'm not finished. If you don't get your act together, we're all-"

"There are others here," Fingunt said. Everything was now silent and still, and Vega slowly opened the door. Kiudein and Fingunt, both Pearlcatchers, stared at the newcomers.

Vega spoke first, "Sorry to interrupt... whatever's going on here, but we were told we could come here for help. My friend here, Irga, he got a head injury and lost his memory, is there anything you can do for him?"

Fingunt looked over at Kiudein, who just sighed and nodded. "Well, I don't know much about that, but my cousin, Elderberry, is much better in that sort of field. He's not here at the moment, but I'm sure he'll be back within the hour," he said. Kiudein shot him a glare, and he continued, "I'm afraid I have, uh, business to attend to, but you're welcome to wait in the lab for him. Just... don't touch anything." He hurried out, only offering a slight wave.

"Kiudein, right?" Vega asked once Fingunt was gone. "I'm Vega, and this is Irga."

She nodded in acknowledgment. "You two must be new here, what brings you to Opovder?"

"No idea." "Family business." Vega got the feeling that Kiudein would see through any lie, so her best option was to tell a technical truth. "Do you work in the lab, too?" she asked.

"No, I deal in the political field," she responded. "What kind of business does your family do, if you don't mind me asking?"

Vega paused for a moment. "We do jobs for a very wealthy employer. The kind of work varies, but we get very good benefits," she said. She was veering very close to spilling the truth, but any lie would put the Pearlcatcher on edge, and from what she was saying, she could become a very good ally. "What about your family, you definitely seem rather important?"

Now it was Kiudein's turn to pause. "My father is a powerful person here. My mother is a queen, not here, our court is to the east. Many of my relatives live here, too, but they are easily distracted from their duties." she said. "Now, this employer, how long has your family been in their service?"

The next hour or so became a game of the two dodging questions, both of them knowing that they couldn't lie, but Vega found herself enjoying the conversation. Kiudein seemed very uptight, but she really just had a very subtle way of insulting others and making jokes.

Before she knew it, the conversation was abruptly cut short by the arrival of a very small Fae, no, a hatchling entering the lab. Vega was about to introduce herself, but a shout suddenly filled the room. "Don't touch that!" he yelled at Irga, who was currently looking at a bubbling vat of... something.

"Relax, Elderberry, he's just looking," Kiudein said, "I've been keeping an eye on him. These are Vega and Irga, and now, I will be leaving. I hope we see each other again, Vega."

"Likewise, Kiudein," she said. She was sad to see her new friend(?) leave, but now they could hopefully recover Irga's memory with Elderberry's help.

"Elderberry, we've been told you can help us," Irga said. It was strange to see the two so close, the size difference was almost comical. "I got a rather nasty head injury, and my memory is failing."

The Fae flew to the side of his head, and landed on Irga's snout. "Right, so, in theory, I help you, but there's no guarantee. I know a procedure that's almost perfect, but I've never actually done it."

"So I'll be a lab rat?" the Imperial asked. "Not like I've got much of a choice, to be fair."

"What's the procedure?" Vega asked.

Elderberry hopped off of Irga, and hovered near her head. He was about to land, but General Skink (who was slightly bigger than him) gave him a rather nasty glare. "It's quite simple. I'll send a magical shock through his head, which will reset it, and then bring all of the repressed memories back to the front of the brain. It will be pretty confusing the next few days afterwards while the brain sorts through the information, but that's only temporary."

"And what happens if it goes wrong?" Irga asked. "What's the absolute worst case scenario?"

"Oh, you die," Elderberry responded. "But when it comes to magic cures, that's pretty mild. So, are you up to it?"

The Imperial sighed, and looked up. "I suppose I am."

"Great, because I'm not," the Fae said. "Come back tomorrow, I'll be ready then. Oh, and Irga? Don't eat anything before coming here. I'm telling you that for your sake, not mine."

"You got it," he said, and the pair exited the lab. "Did you see all the stuff in there? Everyone in that family must be geniuses, that was the most advanced technology I've ever seen!"

He remembered something. "Did you understand any of it? Did it seem familiar to you?" Vega asked.

"There was a telescope," he said. "They hadn't fully assembled it, but I could see the finished version in my mind perfectly. I must've seen something like it before, right?"

"A telescope, huh? Well, we'll know tomorrow," she said. "We should explore the town today, since there's nothing better to spend our time on."

"We should ask about Kiudein, too," Irga added. "She seemed to be pretty important, we should find out what we can."

With a new mission in mind, the pair set off to see everything they could within the day. Their questioning didn't bring up anything they didn't already know, which is what Vega expected.

They spent the night in the same inn, and were both ready for whatever the next day held, though for slightly different reasons. While Vega was happy to help her friend regain his memory, she felt a tinge of excitement for what the Being would give her for completing her mission.

All that could wait until tomorrow, though. For now, she had a clear mission in mind, new friends, and wonderful opportunities.

. . .

After sleeping in much later than they planned, the pair returned to the lab just after noon. The building had no windows, but they could see pink lights flickering from underneath the door. Vega knocked, and after a few seconds of waiting, cracked open the door.

"You're late!" Elderberry yelled. Upon opening the door further, it became clear that the small Fae was the source of the light, his veins were clearly visible and what looked like pink steam came from his eyes. "Hurry, hurry, this way," he went through a doorway before any explanation could be asked for or offered.

He led them to a near-empty room, the only things there being a large bed in the center and a desk shoved to the side. Irga crawled up on the bed, and Vega stood near the desk.

"You didn't eat anything, right?" Elderberry asked. He linked up strange wires to Irga's head, and then connected them to his own body.

"Uh, no. Why are you glowing?" Irga asked.

Elderberry stopped for a moment. "Irga, think about this logically. I am roughly the size of your eye, do you think I have enough magic normally to do anything to you? No, so I spent a day storing it up, and I'm going to send it all into your brain to fix you. Which reminds me, you are paying for this, right?"

That's what we were forgetting, Vega thought. "Don't worry, I'll cover it," she said. The Being would most likely provide enough to cover the cost, and if not, she brought a small fortune with her when she left home.

Speaking of the Being, General Skink looked rather annoyed at being dragged out of the inn in such a rush. Elderberry was explaining something to Irga, so she slipped it a small cricket out of a bag of snacks she'd bought the day before.

"No food in the lab!" the Fae yelled, not even looking at her. "Get out, get out!" he made shooing motions, not daring to move too much because of the wires.

How did he notice that? "But-"

"Out." Elderberry twisted his neck to look over his shoulder, freezing Vega in place. His eyes were both tiny slits, burning with intensity, but that wasn't what scared her. No, it was the fact that she recognized that sort of look, that said, 'I can kill you and not feel a thing doing it.'

She backed out of the room, opting to wait in the entrance area. She tried to ignore the strange noises from the back, and then the screams, which then turned into heaving coughs. She did not, however, ignore the scratchy voice that soon followed.

"Your reward will come soon. Stay in the city and wait for your next assignment."

Vega let out a deep sigh of relief. Irga's memory was back, and they would both get answers.

"Vega, get over here!" Elderberry called. "He wants to see you, and, uh, he says to bring the lizard!" Vega jumped up and nearly ran to the back, General Skink in tow.

Inside, a very on edge Irga awaited. His eyes darted from side to side, and his claws gripped the bed so hard that it threatened to break. "Vega-you-I know what's going on," he stammered.

"Elderberry, can you leave us?" Vega asked. The Fae didn't respond, instead opting to leave silently. "Tell me everything you remember, I'll fill in the gaps as well as I can."

Irga launched into a rambling of everything he remembered, the importance of strength and rejection of change in his birthplace, his research of the Being, and the eventual contact. "It said to find this place and-and to ally myself with royalty from afar," he said breathlessly, "which can only mean-"

"Kiudein," Vega realized at the same moment. "Well, I'm going to make a gamble and say that you succeeded in your first mission."

"So, now what?" The question hung in the air for an uncomfortable moment. The pair had fulfilled all their goals, and with no further instruction from the Being, there wasn't much of a reason to do anything.

Small wingbeats from outside the room caught the Skydancer's attention. "I guess we start by paying Elderberry?"
