Irga came from a clan of fighters, and he was no exception. Most of the others only used their strength to fight each other over small things. This angered Irga for a reason for a reason he could not quite understand. In his mind, strength was a tool to make change in the world. But everyone was stuck in their old ways, which drew him to much more powerful ways to make change.

He was never all that smart, but he still researched every ancient power he could get information on. Eventually, through threatening the nephew of a far off librarian, he learned of the Otherworldly Being. An ancient force, that would offer grand gifts to those who served it. In other words, exactly what Irga needed.

He spent weeks digging into everything he could find about the Being, until one day when he was assembling a telescope for a new observatory, he heard a voice from within it. It sounded angry, almost military-like.

"I am impressed that you learned so much from so little. Prove you are worthy of my gifts, find the walled city within the Scarred Wastelands and create connections with royalty from afar."

The Otherworldly Being had taken notice to him, and bestowed an assignment upon him. Irga took off northwest within the hour, with dreams of change clouding his reasoning. He didn't bring anything with him, he didn't even eat or drink anything before-hand, a mistake that would soon prove near-fatal.

. . .

The walls were in sight. He'd been flying for nearly two days with no breaks, and it was beginning to wear on him. He didn't even notice that he was tilting downward until it was too late, the wind rushed by as he plummeted head first, the only thing he could hear was his heartbeat until-

SMACK

Someone was talking. He opened his eyes, just barely making out the form of a Skydancer with... something on her shoulder. "-okay? That was quite the fall, what were you doing? Do you live here?" she asked.

Did he? Where was 'here'? He noticed large walls behind the stranger, walls that most likely had a city behind them. "Uh, probably? Sorry, I'm having trouble remembering," he replied. His vision was getting clearer, and he could make out the figure on her shoulder. "Is that a lizard?"

"Yeah, it's my...pet." That sounded like a lie. "I'm Vega, do you remember your name?" she asked. She offered a hand, and he took it, slowly picking himself up.

Do I? "Irga." The name came out of his mouth almost as a reflex, and he just had to trust that it was correct. He straightened his glasses and looked at the definitely-not-a-pet lizard. "Does your pet have a name?"

"No, I just now found it," she answered. "We should get inside the city, maybe they'll know what's going on with you. Can you still fly?"

Why was she helping him? He just nodded, and they headed into the city.

. . .

To his surprise, Irga woke up before Vega. He didn't want to still be awake, nor did he want to wake up the strange Skydancer (Why was she helping him? Why did she bandage his head with such concern, and say that his wound wouldn't scar like it actually worried her?), so he settled for laying still on his bed.

He heard shuffling from Vega's side, but decided to stay put. The day's activities could wait until he wasn't so tired, no reason to rush.

"Recover his memory."

He knew that voice he knew it he knew it why couldn't he remember.

He shot out of bed and looked over to see Vega with her 'pet'. "Did... did your lizard just talk?" he asked. Her face instantly revealed the answer, she looked terrified.

"What did the voice sound like?" she asked, her voice giving the slightest shake.

What kind of a question is that? "A really angry drill sergeant. It sounds super familiar, but I can't quite place it," he replied, figuring there was no point in lying. Her body slightly relaxed at his answer, which somehow made him relax, too.

"I will explain all of this, I promise, but it will be so much easier once your memory is back," the Skydancer said. Irga weighed the options before him: one, he could decide not to trust the only person that he had any real connection to at the moment, and try and figure out the mystery of his memory and that weird lizard by himself, or two, he could trust Vega to help him and keep her word, gaining answers, his memories, and a good friend in the process.

Not really much of a choice, he thought. "Alright, let's go," he said. "You are the only person I currently know, and General Skink over there seems to want my memory back, too." He almost laughed at the ridiculous name he gave the lizard, and got even closer when he saw the look on its face.

Vega looked like she was holding back a laugh as well. "I guess our first stop is a doctor," she said. "There has to be someone in this town who can help, right?"

. . .

They'd been looking around for hours. Irga was only half listening to the various citizens they talked to. He heard something about a lab, and soon he was following the much more social Vega to a secluded building near the stairway that lead underground.

There was shouting from inside, loud shouting. Vega cracked open the door to listen better, but Irga couldn't focus, not with the headache that was brewing beneath his skull. He place his head in his hands, but quickly composed himself when he saw the door being opened all the way.

Vega offered introductions to the Pearlcatchers inside. He was only able to fully hear the last bit of their conversation, before his brain shut out all noise.

"...cousin, Elderberry...back...hour...don't touch anything," one of the strangers said, before rushing out. Irga stepped inside, ducking to avoid hitting his head (which was the last thing he needed). Vega got to talking with the remaining stranger, and Irga opted to look around the lab, making sure to obey the one thing he'd heard.

"...brings you to Opovder?" the Pearlcatcher asked. The question seemed to be directed at both of them.

"No idea." "Family business." Irga looked back at the pair, and saw mutual looks of curiosity and caution in their eyes. He decided that the pair's antics were something he wanted no part in, and went back to looking through the lab. Right before he got out of earshot, he heard something about the Pearlcatcher's mother being a queen, and decided to tuck that knowledge away for further use.

Though he had nothing to compare the place to, Irga got the distinct impression that the place was impressive. Desks and shelves, most very disorganized, lined the walls. All of the equipment was far too small for the Imperial, and he had to keep his wings very close to his body to fit most areas. He peaked his head into a room too small for him, and was instantly his with that same feeling he felt after hearing the lizard's voice.

A half-assembled telescope was in the center of the room, with tiny tools laying on the ground around it. An image of the finished version flashed through his mind, and the memory brought feelings of accomplishment. Did I build something like that? he wondered, No, I'm not smart enough for that. I probably was just near it when something happened.

He left, wishing that he was small enough to get closer to it. Returning to where Vega and the Pearlcatcher were still talking, a bubbling cauldron caught his attention. He leaned over it and held his breath, trying to not breath in any of the gas rising from it.

"Don't touch that!" a high pitched, rather flat voice, exclaimed. It took a while for Irga to find its source, a tiny Fae, maybe even a hatchling.

"Relax, Elderberry, he's just looking," the Pearlcatcher said, "I've been keeping an eye on him. These are Vega and Irga, and now, I will be leaving. I hope we see each other again, Vega." Elderberry, that's who the other Pearlcatcher mentioned before, he remembered.

"Likewise, Kiudein," Vega said. The Skydancer had a slight smile on her face, and a fierce spark of determination in her eyes.

"Elderberry, we've been told you can help us," Irga said, slightly unnerved by talking to someone so small. "I got a rather nasty head injury, and my memory is failing."

The Fae flew to the side of his face before landing on his snout, as though it was a perfectly normal place to hold a conversation. "Right, so, in theory, I help you, but there's no guarantee. I know a procedure that's almost perfect, but I've never actually done it," he said. He didn't seem concerned about that fact, honestly he sounded like it took effort to put a hint of emotion into his voice.

"So I'll be a lab rat?" Irga asked, now even more off put by the Fae. "Not like I've got much of a choice, to be fair."

"What's the procedure?" Vega asked.

Elderberry dropped from Irga's snout and hovered in front of the Skydancer. "It's quite simple. I'll send a magical shock through his head, which will reset it, and then bring all of the repressed memories back to the front of the brain. It will most likely be pretty confusing the next few days afterwards while the brain sorts through the information, but that's only temporary."

"And what happens if it goes wrong?" Irga asked, trying not to let his voice reveal his worry. "What's the absolute worst case scenario?"

"Oh, you die," Elderberry responded. Like it doesn't even matter. "But when it comes to magic cures, that's pretty mild. So, are you up to it?"

Irga looked towards the ceiling, considering his options. He sighed, and said, "I suppose I am."

"Great, because I'm not," the Fae said. "Come back tomorrow, I'll be ready then. Oh, and Irga? Don't eat anything before coming here. I'm telling you that for your sake, not mine." For once, he actually sounded a tiny bit sincere.

"You got it." Sure, the Fae and the rest of his family seemed pretty crazy (all to varying degrees), but they certainly knew what they were doing when it came to science. And seeing as how Vega had been able to lead them to the lab, they must've been well known around the city.

Once the pair was outside, Irga decided to strike up conversation. "Did you see all the stuff in there? Everyone in that family must be geniuses, that was the most advanced technology I've ever seen!" It sounded a bit more enthusiastic than he'd intended, but the excitement of remembering something was still settling in.

"Did you understand any of it? Did it seem familiar to you?" Vega asked, as though she read his mind. Must be a Skydancer thing, he decided.

"There was a telescope," he said. "They hadn't fully assembled it, but I could see the finished version in my mind perfectly. I must've seen something like it before, right?"

"A telescope, huh? Well, we'll know tomorrow," Vega said. "We should explore the town today, since there's nothing better to spend our time on."

"We should ask about Kiudein, too," Irga added. "She seemed to be pretty important, we should find out what we can." And some of us didn't spend nearly an hour interrogating her as a form of conversation.

The pair spent the rest of the day exploring the city, which felt quite different from what Irga imagined a Plague clan to be like, but in a good way. Asking about Kiudein revealed quite a lot (for Irga), she was a princess of a court to the east and held a large role in the politics of the clan. Many of her relatives lived in the clan, though none were as involved as her. In other words, she could be an incredible ally.

When it got late, the pair returned to the same inn as before. Irga, despite his slight worry about the next day's procedure, was genuinely excited to get his memory back. Soon, he was drifting off, filled with hope for the next day.
