Tessera

Seeing the world reflected in on itself, Tessera's earliest memory is of her father scooping her up in his arms and muttering things to himself, while her mother follows shortly behind, writing notes down on parchment with a quill. From then on, its a dizzying sequence of experiments and observation. None of her trials unlock the mystery behind her fractured sight, and instead she simply suffers or bears her teeth through the effects of strange magic ravaging her body. Before long she becomes numb to it, harnessing the pain and using it to fuel herself as she stands tall for the first time in a while, magic sparking at her hands and wings.
Her parents are shocked when she stands up to them, but as Tessera flies away, she can hear the excitement in their voices behind her. Her skin still tingles with adrenaline for hours later. For days, she flies in a winding pattern, unsure what to do with her newfound freedom and scared to encounter other dragons. But she cannot fend for herself forever. Growing exhausted, she takes shelter in the eaves of a ruined lair. To her surprise, she wakes up to find the lair still very much inhabited. Nervous of her hosts but too hungry to pass up their hospitality, Tessera stays. She staunchly refuses to take lessons from the lair's witches, and after some time, they learn to stop offering. But no matter how she tries to put it out of her mind, she can't help being curious about her own powers. Spending more and more time in the library, she slowly learns magical theory by self-study. The librarian collaborates with the witches to curate her reading list, and while the interference bothers her at first, she comes to accept it. The secrets of her splintered sight never reveal themselves, but as her magic gets more powerful, the intensity of her reflected visions gets stronger. In them, she sees a recurring figure, large and surrounded by blue flames. And while it is an imposing presence, Tessera knows immediately that it can be trusted. Delving into more esoteric texts, she manages at last to pull the illusionary dragon into focus. Eirawen is immediately viewed as suspect by the lair's other dragons, and it takes months for Tessera to convince them of his benevolence. Her asocial habits come back to bite her: no one is eager to trust a dragon who doesn't speak to them. During this time, Eirawen himself is her only solace. |
