Eirawen is already near death before he hatches, and despite his parents' best efforts, he does not survive his adolescence. Hearing his family's despair at his passing, he resolves to come back to them eventually, no matter what it takes.

But for a young ghost, that's easier said than done. He hangs around his parents' lair, hoping they might turn to him and smile once more. But they cannot see him, and he eventually grows tired of being ignored. He has no particular destination in mind when he sets out, but even so, he's not ready to serve the gods yet. Drifting from place to place, he passes through many lairs unseen, and eventually forgets why he lingers on.

So it is a surprise to him as much as to Tessera when she looks directly at him. Not through him, not past him. She meets his eyes, only for a moment, and then her eyes go out of focus and the connection snaps. Eirawen cannot let it go like that. Determined to speak with her again, he stays near her at all times, hoping for a miracle.

And while it takes a very long time, a miracle does occur. Blending her visions with her corrupted magic, Tessera pulls Eirawen's spirit into focus. As soon as she can see him clearly, she smiles.

But it turns out that he's now visible to all dragons. As the others in the lair react with hostility towards his ghostly yet tangible presence, it is only Tessera who defends him. He clings to her like a lifeline, and over time, he realizes she had been just as lonely. Until now.
