The Counterspy

The day will always triumph.

As always, Laenalaerr has enjoyed Brightshine Jubilee, and with no drama going on in the clan she has been permitted to spend the festival in her natal lands, much to her appreciation.

*

As always, Laenalaerr is intrigued by a new Ancient, but she vehemently disagrees with the drive to recruit one. They stir a great uneasiness in her—and she wonders if that has to do with the accident that disfigured her so in the Shifting Expanse.

11511.png

Laenalaerr is the most professional and ambitious of the clan-leaders, though she currently has no further to rise. A clear-eyed observer and scientist, she oversees the more-or-less scientific experiments of the clan's newly-founded "research" arm, and keeps general tabs on the rest of the clan and on their neighbors, aided by Mesa and Scorzalite. She keeps a notebook within easy reach at all times to record her more interesting observations, and is rarely silent in council meetings about how the clan's fortunes could be improved.

More civilized than most of her fellows, preferring a certain level of refinement and creature comforts, Laenalaerr is also less loyal. She has been happy to stand back and let catastrophes happen in the past—because interfering would spoil her dataset—and will continue to do so. If she were ever to turn on the clan, her list of the various dragons habits, allegiances, abilities, and afflictions could make her devastating. Her allegiance to the clan is almost entirely to watch some particularly intriguing history in the making.

With her coldness masked by a layer of affability and friendly enthusiasm, Laenalaerr is well-liked by most of the clan. She has a particular sporting rivalry with Liglanaerr, and is favored by most of the clan's "scientists" and merchants.

Golemwork
Laenalaerr was ravaged in the Crossing when the clan travelled from their home to Derecho Canyon. Ithiliisahn's magic patched much of what Ykkerekk's healing could not, reinforcing her severely burned and battered limbs with metal and running wires where nerves had been damaged too badly to function. She and the Forgeworkers Arietty and Harvest have added and upgraded the attachments, but they still have a tendency to irritate her surrounding flesh.

Disease
In her more badly-injured areas, Laenalaerr suffers from poor bloodflow and raw wounds caused by the parasitic metal. She is host to several low-grade bacterial infections, though a combination of her strong Light immune system and regular rinses with antibiotic tinctures keep them from doing worse than giving her a ghoulish appearance and rotten smell.

Craft
Laenalaerr favors the fine crystalline spheres common in the Sunbeam Ruins, making both practical lamps to be run off elemental Light or oil, and beautiful rainbow assortments of quartz and found gems. Her wares are some of the more popular with neighboring clans.

Physical description
Laenalaerr is a slender, mid-sized skydancer with short, grouse-like wings. Her natural grace is marred with the occasional tremor from old nerve damage, and her almost almond-like scent is choked with rusty metal, blood, and rot. Her voice, however, is still musical and persuasive. She is a reluctant and poor but extremely fast flier. Her long, heavy legs make her particularly good at wading in the local hot springs and tidal zones.

Combat
Laenalaerr is an irregular fighter who mostly has seen employment as a raider. She is a physical fighter, lashing out with hard-edged wings backed in close-range by claw and hooked beak.

Origin
Laenalaerr joined Cindercone Clan as a hatchling, to Liglanaerr's immediate disconcertment. Whatever her hatching-clan would have been to her in her adulthood is unknown—both her parents have been Exalted, and she has no memories to guide her without her bloodline's call.

Though few know it, Laenalaerr was initially brought to the clan to counteract the Shadow spy, Liglanaerr. It is uncertain at this time who orchestrated this.

Kin
Laenalaerr is the daughter of two skydancers, both of whom are now Exalted. On her father's side, she is mostly skydancer, guardian, and mirror; on her mother's, she is mostly wildclaw, imperial, and mirror. She knows her family only in the abstract.

Curiously, both of her parents are Exalted to Plaguebringer, despite Laenalaerr's having clearly been born in a Light clan, and her mother's side is purely Shadow until four times removed from her.

Familiar
Laenalaerr, her duty to tame the swan discharged, has taken up this sunloving serpentine plant. They are having fun together, but it is unlikely their bond will last for very long.
