The Diplomat

Just listen.

A shooting star...

Mesa is ill, weak and shaky and sparking oddly with Arcane energy. He is keeping it managed with cups of Vermouth's bitter herbs—surely the alchemist wouldn't dare alter the appearance of the clan diplomat!

*

Mesa is feeling better, and intrigued by the full report of the aether. How does one bargain with the strange spacefolk? What do they value?

*

Mesa is somewhat less pleased than the rest of the clan about Greenskeeper Gathering. He has been spending time out and about, trying to strengthen the alliances with Cindercone's remaining allies.

195.png

Mesa is an easy-going dragon with a knack for diplomacy, helping to negotiate good relations between Cindercone Clan and her draconic and beastclan neighbors, and assisting Stormweaver in selling the clan's goods and services. He is also part of the air patrol, scanning for trouble and seeing off intruders with brilliant flashes or scalding light.

Despite his skill with diplomacy, Mesa is not well-liked by his clanmates. He has a habit of observing them in a way that feels like he's looking for blackmail. The fact that he is reserved and generally rule-following puts him ill at ease with his more rough-and-tumble clanfellows. During the clan's time at the Plague/Shadow border, he was closer with the talanok than with his draconic mates, but there are fewer of them in Cindercone territory.

While generally isolated from the clan, Mesa has an unusually close relationship with the violent loner Scrap, and regularly brings her little treats and treasures that she misses out on in her fringe-dwelling ways. He also admires and has a symbiotic relationship with Laenalaerr, whose interests often align with his own.

Mesa can usually be found in Cindercone's built structures, or on the wing. He hates wading in ash, and will go to great lengths to avoid being grounded in clan territory.

Craft
Mesa favors colorful creations of living or cut flowers. He always accompanies official statements with a colorful bouquet. However, the clan-leaders have been pushing for him to supplement this with a less ephemeral art, which will likely take the form of some variation on the theme.

Physical description
Mesa is a large, handsome skydancer with broad, soaring wings. His fine grooming and lack of musculature and weaponry make him stand out against the background of half-wild mirrors and their associates. He is particularly skilled at climbing and has an easy soaring flight. His scent is reminiscent of dried evergreens.

Combat
After grudgingly being hauled into the arena by his familiar, Mesa discovered he had a surprising appetite for combat. He specializes in speed and agility backed with unexpected magical strength, but can barely take a hit. He often fights with the feral child Scrap, with whom he's begun to develop an odd friendship.

197.png
Origin
Mesa was left in the camp one day by someone unknown. Beyond that he is from somewhere in Light, his origins are entirely unknown.

24497.png
Kin
Mesa is a pureblooded skydancer, both of his parents coming from the wild. He has no knowledge of them, however, as he came in as barely-feathered hatchling.

The Ringmaster

Care to place a bet?

A shooting star...

Kaichi is laid up with a splitting headache, chills, sores, and blistered Arcane burns. Tough as he is, he knows he is in no condition to fight, though he lacks his partner's trust in Vermouth's remedies—who knows what he might try on an unwary talanok?—and relies instead on Ykkerekk's slower cures.

*

Kaichi is less enthused than his partner about the aether. The few he's met are utterly clueless about how to deal with beastfolk, apparently having had none in the skies.

*

Kaichi is feeling much better since Greenskeeper Gathering. Where Mesa takes to Cindercone's draconic allies, he sets out to gather news from his fellow beastfolk.
19259.png

Kaichi is, despite his species, a full member of Cindercone Clan, and serves as a bridge with the Beastclans in the opposite direction of Mesa. While he would side with his own people in the case of a conflict, he doubts that would ever arise with this group of dragons—and perhaps with a little more persuasion, they'll even be willing to fight as mercenaries for the Beastclan cause, at least against dragon clans of Earth or Nature. He flat-out disbelieves the stories that Cindercone is involved in any anti-beastclan group, but has so far failed to persuade their one-time allies of the truth.

Diplomatic harmony, in Kaichi's opinion, is better acquired with a violent release and bonding than with talk. He runs a bloodsport ring, where anyone can battle against dragons, beastkin, or captured animals, or pit familiars against each other. He, and a few of his friends, serve as referees, enforcers, bookies, beast-handlers, and occasionally as combatants themselves. Combatants of any stripe are kept from serious injury and healed between bouts. While he has rebuilt the ring since the return to Fire, he still has fewer guests than he might like.

Kaichi is well-liked by most of the dragons, though Rain is oddly mistrustful of him. He is much more appreciative of his familiar-bonded companion now that Mesa has begun fighting, and spends much time giving him advice.

(overhaul to come when Talanok lore updates)

Craft
Like all members of the clan, Kaichi has been required to take up a craft. While somewhat frustrated that dance—an outgrowth of his martial practices—is not considered enough since no physical good is produced, he has begun to develop his own take on the bolos, bells, and fascinators characteristically wielded by his tribe. He remains somewhat amateurish in this, and it can be dangerous to come too close to his workspace when he is testing a new design—weights have been known to break free of their cord at painful speeds.

Physical description
Kaichi is comparatively tall for a falconiform raptorik. Lean and wiry, he has a springy stride and is a supremely skilled flyer. His scent is feathery and somewhat harsh.

Combat
Kaichi is an adept warrior, far exceeding the seventeenth tier of his profession. He lunges quickly in and out of the fray, using his bells as a bola or distraction, and cutting opponents down with his sharp beak or blasts of electricity.

10757.png
Origin
Kaichi has traveled extensively. His original nest was somewhere in the Light/Nature borderlands, but he has spent time in the plains dividing Light and Lightning, the Ashfall Wastes, the Southern Icefield, and even shipside in the crystalline archipelago of Arcane. His affiliation with the Rogue's Camp began shortly after Liglanaerr first moved in, as he was dwelling there at the time.

192.png
Kin
Kaichi has a few brothers he keeps in contact with, but is far from most of his original flock. He does not seem at all bothered by this, and in fact is reluctant to pursue connection with them.
