". . ."
- Hyoid to
Regal
Introduction and Personality

Hyoid is the only physically disabled dragon in Regal's clan. At an early age, he had gotten into an accident where he had a severe injury dealt to his throat, therefore, he can't speak whatsoever. Since it was such a long time ago that the incident occurred, his fur has grown over the scar and covers it. Regardless, Hyoid doesn't have too much trouble communicating with others, as he'll give many gestures, various expressions, and mouth words. Although, he does try to use sign language rather often, as this is his best and main form of communication. Obviously, not every dragon knows the language, and therefore Hyoid will have to rely on his body language in order to talk to another.

Aside from his inability to speak, Hyoid is an extremely kind Tundra, with surprisingly good memory despite his species. And although he loves to socialize, he keeps to himself only because he can't use sign language with everyone, and finds the immense amount of gesturing and expressions to be exhausting. Therefore, he's an extremely reserved Tundra, which led to Hyoid developing hobbies; such as collecting items, more particularly bones. His favorite types of bones are hyoids(The bone he's named after), spines, and skulls. In his personal den inside of the clan's lair, he has shelves upon shelves of collected skulls of different animals, familiars, and even dragons. Though, whenever someone lays eyes upon his beloved collection, he quickly makes sure to let them know he didn't do any of the killing to receive the variety of skulls.

Origin and Meaning of Name

Hyoid, obviously inferred by the color of his eyes, is from the Tangled Wood. However, he knows nothing beyond that, as he had lost his memory when it comes to his past. Hyoid suspects this to be the cost of having a good present memory, however, Ossifrage, Hyoid's dearest companion, believes that it's due to the trauma Hyoid may or may not have experienced with the incident of losing his voice. Hyoid subconsciously and hastily changes the subject whenever his past is brought up, which is used as evidence for Ossifrage's theory. As for how the mute Tundra joined the clan, however, seemingly right after the incident of losing his voice; he had simply wandered into the Scarred Wasteland aimlessly, before happening upon Regal and his clan. Immediately after seeing the coloration of Hyoid's eyes, Regal tackled the Tundra and brought him to the ground, yelling at him in a rage and questioning in a venomous tone, "What's a shadow dragon like you doing here?!" The young, mute Tundra would merely squirm underneath Regal, tears shedding from the poor Tundra's eyes as Regal's abrupt actions clearly shook and frightened Hyoid; perhaps even triggering his trauma. Opulent would quickly run over at the commotion, and sternly told for Regal to leave the weeping young Tundra alone. Opulent was the first to notice the deep red gash that ran through Hyoid's neck, though it seemed the bleeding had already stopped, surprisingly. She quickly treated Hyoid's wounds, and comforted the latter, glaring at Regal all the while. After a good night's rest, Hyoid explained to the two founders via writing what he was doing all alone in the Scarred Wasteland, mentioning how he didn't remember anything from his past except for traveling from the Tangled Wood to the Scarred Wasteland, and of course, his name. He was clearly confused and scared, and would often out of habit try to speak, yet to no avail. By this time in the clan's history, Sybaritic and Pluto had already been recruited, and the two often refered to Hyoid as the "crybaby Tundra". Later on, Hyoid had grown up a bit more, and became far more used to the fact that he could no longer speak. Though, he had trouble, both with fitting in and communicating with his fellow clanmates. But when the fateful day came around that Regal and Opulent would save an anxious Gaoler named Ossifrage, Hyoid's life changed for the better. At first, when Ossifrage was persistent in becoming Hyoid's friend, Hyoid was unsure about the Gaoler, but when the latter wanted to learn sign, Hyoid became ecstatic; always wanting a companion who could use sign language such as himself. Although, the fact of the matter was that Hyoid's sign language was mostly self-taught, so he had a bit of difficulty in teaching Ossifrage his very own language. Regardless, Hyoid couldn't be happier than he is now in Regal's loving clan, and has since forgiven Regal for scaring him that day, the two agreeing to be on good terms.

As mentioned before, Hyoid is named after a bone called the hyoid, which is a horseshoe-shaped bone that rests between the neck and chin. Ironically, given how Hyoid can no longer talk, the bone hyoid is actually an important factor when it comes to talking, as without it, one wouldn't be able to open their jaw; or at least would have trouble doing so.

Familiar

When Hyoid was out relishing in his hobby of bone collecting, he had actually found a Bone Fiend next to a small pile of bones it had collected itself. Hyoid would tilt his head at the peculiar creature, seeing its own pile and saw how it had a similar hobby as Hyoid. Hyoid looked upon his large pile of bones, and decided to share his with the Bone Fiend. Cautiously approaching the frail and sickly looking creature, Hyoid placed down a large number of bones, adding it to the small pile in front of the Bone Fiend. The Bone Fiend flinched from Hyoid popping out of the blue, but didn't budge, and instead slowly looked up to the mute Tundra; who would give the small white creature a friendly smile before walking away. The next day, Hyoid came back to the same graveyard of bones, only to find the Bone Fiend sitting in the same spot it had been positioned in yesterday. Curiously, Hyoid trotted over to the frail creature and laid down beside it to meet its level more. The Bone Fiend would look over to Hyoid, recognizing the latter from yesterday and lifting one of its bony hands, placing it atop the Tundra's snout gently as the white creature continued staring at its pile of bones. Hyoid's shoulders would bounce with silent laughter at the creature's actions, before the two would stay like that for hours, the Bone Fiend occasionally sneaking glances at Hyoid before returning its eyes to where they originally were. Eventually, however, Hyoid noticed the sun setting, and decided to head back to the clan's lair. He gently brushed off the Bone Fiend's petite hand, lifting himself from the ground. Hyoid would wave to the small creature with a grin before taking his leave, making his way back to the lair, entering his personal den. However, once he had gotten in his room, he heard a small yawn. Hastily turning his head to look behind him in confusion, he found the Bone Fiend from the graveyard had been hitching a ride on top of Hyoid; seemingly asleep on the warm black fur that made up Hyoid's back. Hyoid was overjoyed to see the Fiend had come along with him, and allowed the odd creature to continue sleeping; going to sleep himself. From then on, whenever you see Hyoid, there's always going to be a skinny, white creature attached to his back; naming the Bone Fiend Vomer, a bone located in the skull. Often, when Hyoid goes scavenging for bones with Ossifrage, both of their familiars will help out in finding bones and items, sometimes even creating their own piles of bones that the two dragons don't want. Albeit, when Vomer attempts to keep his own pile, Lammergeier and Gypaetus will often try to drag away Vomer's bones, to which the Bone Fiend will simply smack them away with his frail, shaky hands.
