ABOUT xxx What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

“You’re here to look through Malus' file, aren’t you? It’s right here,” Laurel shrugs. “Specifically, you want to look at his illness and see if we can do anything for him, because everything the previous Clans have tried has failed.”

“H- How did you know?”

“No magic involved. Am told me.”

“...that is significantly more disappointing than what I imagined.”

“Reality… is often disappointing. Right,” the Skydancer coughs, and flips the ring file open. “Malus Florentina, Imperial, Plague Flight. Hatched near the Wyrmwound.”

“Florentina? Why-”

“His father is a Nature dragon. Florentina is an adjective, the root word means blossoming. Malus is a genus of apples.”

“Apples?! As in the edible kind?”

“Same genus, but different species, the Malus domestica,” Laurel lets out a small snort. “Funnily enough, malus can also mean bad or harmful.”

“Wait, what’s the difference?”

“Pronunciation. Etymologically, they’re unrelated. Basically, the short a is for evil, the long a is for apple.”

“That’s… not very helpful.”

“Think of it as bow versus bow.”

“And why would you name your child harmful?”

Laurel shrugs, reaching for a pen, “Firstly, it sounds cool, second, it’s Plague, third, it keeps in tradition with the plant names. For stereotypical Plague dragons, he can tell them that his name means evil so they don't call him a wimp. For Nature dragons, he cites its actual eponym. Convenient, isn't it?”

“Okay, fair enough.”

“Back to this. Hmm… What is it with parents leaving their eggs close to the edge of some dangerous crater and something happening to their hatchlings? If I had a gold coin for every time I’ve read about this happening, I'd have two gold coins. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. Right?"

“Mhm. No, I don’t know why either. So…”

“Well, surprise surprise, something from the Wyrmwound infected his egg. Bam, mutation. Honestly not surprised. Hmm… the next section is about his health condition, what’s recorded so far, things to note, and what to look out for. You want this one specifically, right?”

“Yes, please. Can I get a copy for the healers?”

“Sure thing. I’ll write it down as we go. Noticeable mutations… Extra pair of wings. Skeletal in nature, covered with red leather. Appears to be able to move voluntarily. Glowing red claws… but that’s quite common. Hmm… no, most are cosmetic, his is biological. Wears gloves and thick boots to lower possible contamination. Hmm… the ones he has are enchanted. Um… wears a wolf pelt, enchanted to stop infections from spreading to others. Because it says here his body tends to be a vector for diseases… but as long as he covers himself from head to tail he should limit the risk of spreading…”

“So… keep him in isolation?”

“But he’s not going to like it very much, is he?”

“True… He seemed quite cheerful about his predicament, but I’m experienced enough to know that some of it was from bravado. Props to him, though. Is that everything that needs to be copied?”

Laurel finishes writing with a flourish, watching the dark sapphire blue ink dry before gingerly handing over the file plus medical document copy. “Be careful with it, I’m not in the mood to write another.”

“Got it.”

“But, is constantly being on the brink of death truly worth it?”
