LAUREL PAPAVER
Chief Justice of Zenith's Light
Theme
- Usually quite objective, tries her best not to be biased. Akairo is an excepton. - Is actually quite reasonable and fair. However, she can make other's lives legal hell if she really wants to. Normally follows rules to the letter, but is willing to only follow it to the letter - not the spirit. - Seems to be the only around other than Polaris and Regina that can read legalese and actually endure it (emphasis in the enduring), so the three of them read and fill out legal things for the rest of them - Is a Lightning Bruiser who uses polearms a lot. It’s her weapon of choice other than smiting with lightning of unusually high voltages, hence the intimidated dragons call her the "Lightning Lancer". - Ever since Amalia lent her a Physics university book, she’s experimenting with making magic railguns. Notably, launching her enemies into something. - Is an expert at telling half-truths and technical truths. She can lie, but she doesn't like doing so. - Has a 6th sense of sorts, which is essentially electroreception. - The 7th is a lie detector, but it has limitations. If the person believes they're telling the truth, it won't trigger, and if it's the technical or metaphorical truth, it also won't trigger. - Spends her time reading the law and memorising it. Every single rule. - Now insert an evil lawyer joke here. Don't worry, she has a sense of humour. - Can make the cyan Veined glow on command. Also glows when charging up electricity, using Lightning magic or eating/touching electrically-charged items. - Tends to snack on Charged Duneberries and High-Voltage Almonds. - TECHNICALLY, works for Papaver & Rudbeckia LLP (lmao, LLP). Susan basically runs the thing these days, but Laurel helps out where she can. |

Namesake: Laurus nobilis, the bay laurel Meaning: Victory, success, achievement Notes: Used to crown victors in ancient times. All laurels except the bay laurel are highly toxic. |
“I'll remind you again: The law can be both a help and a hindrance.”
Laurel is not dumb. After all, to rise to her position, one has to be sharp of wit and strong of mind. She is, however, constantly besieged by the general stupidity of the populace on a daily basis.
“Polaris, we need to establish some ground rules... If we do end up apprehending any drunken troublemakers, no flash freezes. Okay?”
“What the- who vanished half my tie in this photo?”
“Your Highness, please restrict your Peahats. I don’t think either of us want to deal with yet another lawsuit…”
Thankfully, such beleaguerments are usually restricted to the other Eternal Stars. Most other people follow the law, which is nice and good. Well, there are the usual troublemakers which always give her headaches, but actual court cases are rare.
She was relatively free until the big hoo-hah where Helleborus decided to ambush Delonix out of nowhere (okay, maybe not out of nowhere, they had been giving each other the stink-eye for weeks). Now, she’s swamped with paperwork since so many dragons are suing each other over the incident.
At least discussing technically law-related things with Phoenix helps alleviate her headache somewhat. Well, most would call it gossiping, but she’s merely sharing concrete information found in documents with the co-ruler and asking for her opinion as an unofficial amicus curiae. There.
Still, she had deliberately left out some of the more sensitive information since a) the Queen Consort can just look through the documents herself, b) she’s lazy, and c) she’s supposed to be professional here.
Laurel munches on a High-Voltage Almond, causing the cyan markings on her scales to glow and cast a sheen on the affidavit signed by Honeyleaf. Biased and two-faced the Imperial may be, but when it comes to something threatening the safety of the healers as a whole, she’s surprisingly motherly. If only she wouldn’t instantly snap back to belittling Soulsong… but anyway.
Footsteps sound behind her, so she turns to the prosecutor standing behind her and nods as a way of greeting. “The affidavit checks out with Skadi’s. Any more evidence you would like to submit before tomorrow?”
Dawn Eileen Regina’s ever-sharp gaze twinkles molten gold in the morning light. “Nothing at the moment,” the red Skydancer shakes her head with a certain finality to it. “Just came to say that… since Amalia was among the injured, even though it was only slight, she’s been pestering me to ask for additional security since she'll be testifying. Since she’s royalty…”
Laurel can’t help but visibly hold back a smirk. “And especially with the entire royal family present, their safety is paramount. Permission granted. And if some of those security personnel are suddenly changed to escort Helleborus at the last minute, well, it’s not on me.”
"And when you're on the wrong side of the law... well... good luck."

Dawn Jr: Is stabbing someone immoral? |
Polaris: Not if they consent to it. |
Ava: Depends who you're stabbing. |
