Xerxes was a self-proclaimed genius.

He was known by everyone else as a charlatan.

In his old lair, Xerxes was a grand collector of fine goods, more than eager to peruse a passing dragon's wares and trade for things he swore were high value. When the swindled dragon returned with but a pile of fool's gold in their clutches, the golden Ridgeback insisted it was genuine, and that user error had caused it to shatter. Needless to say, finding a permanent home was a challenge, and Xerxes was thrown out of more lairs than he cared to remember. He had a reputation to uphold, after all.

Eventually, he landed himself in perhaps the hottest water possible - after deceiving one of the Lightweaver's acolytes, they returned in an uproar. The bauble he'd offered in exchange for priceless platinum had crumbled into pieces when laid before the Lightweaver's altar. Though Xerxes tried to talk his way out of the spat, the follower made it clear that his heresy would not go unpunished; they were going to have him exalted under their deity to, as they put it, "learn some manners". For Xerxes, the thought of serving a god was horrible, and so he did what any noble dragon would do.

He ran away.

Months of fleeing eventually led him to Omnia, after he followed a particularly dazzling Imperial with the intention of offering up some bootleg bangles. What he found instead was a plethora of dragons, of all shapes, sizes, and statures. Better yet, with such foot traffic, he was easily able to slip into their ranks without anyone being the wiser of the stowaway. But, it wasn't very long before his antics caught the attention of a wandering samurai, who cornered him as he tried to market an armful of counterfeit wares. In realizing his ploy, she threatened to cast him away, but hearing his long story of exile and loneliness brought about a better, more befitting punishment for the greedy Ridgeback.

He would stay with them, but he would no longer be permitted to exchange goods. Instead, he would appraise them. He could look, touch, and even taste if he so desired, but if a single item was traded or stolen, the samurai would return with a less generous offer. Xerxes had no choice, and settled into a life of tantalizing misery - at the very least, he could still touch the treasures he so desired to "borrow". Maybe one day, he'd get lucky.
