Dr. Egon Spengler, Ph.D. is a former professor of paranormal studies at the University of Goldensparc. Unfortunately for the genius spiral, the world of the supernatural is not something the authorities of the Stormcatcher deem very scientific or necessary to the interests of the Lightning Flight, and his research post was terminated, leaving much important work unfinished.
Frustrated, Spengler looked for a new base nearby where he could complete his inventions and test his theories, hoping to prove that it was possible to locate, capture, and contain ghosts. Needing huge amounts of power to charge the equipment, and space to set up the storage facility, the spiral found himself pitching his ideas to The Lastsparks, who were intrigued but somewhat dubious. Nevertheless, they decided to allow the determined physicist to use one of their labs, and several resident scientists offered to assist the spiral in his work, their professional interest overcoming their skepticism.
When all the apparatus was complete, Spengler, along with Scunner and Technus, went looking for a ghost to test their new gear on. Called urgently to a notoriously 'haunted' museum whose manager was gibbering after spotting a grotesque monster, the three dragons crept through the corridors, stalking the errant spook as it wrought havoc among the displays. A spectral chest that had sprouted fangs and a slimy tongue was munching on the museum's relics, oblivious to the shrieks of terrified patrons.
Causing more damage than the actual creature, the three dragons eventually subdued it, using their proton packs to entangle the slimer in streams of energy and drag it into a specially made ghost trap. The success of this first mission led to many more calls for Spengler's supernatural elimination services, and the Ghostbusters were founded.
Though kept very busy with the antics of the Ghostbusters, Spengler still has time to focus on his side-projects, such as collecting spores, molds and fungus, and reading ancient grimoires about spirits and the paranormal for information that might help him in his new business. A sombre and highly intellectual dragon, Spengler is always serious, and some find his impassive nature hard to decipher. But many of the residents are interested in the work of the Ghostbusters, and listen in wonder and fright to the exciting tales of their exploits, even if those stories are delivered in Spengler's trademark deadpan voice!
