Biography

Shea

K7YJqUL.png

light.png Works as a curio dealer, with a specialty in tracking down antiquities on private commission. (No, that's not code for thievery, grave robbing or anything else illegal. It mostly involves contacting other dealers and private collectors to see if they know anyone in possession of the commission who might be willing to sell and then serving as a middledrake to negotiate a price.)

For a job like that, his own appearance is just as carefully curated as that of his wares. He needs to look clean but just slightly disheveled, fine materials unbuttoned and askew—evidence he can recognize quality but is too busy acquiring it for customers to focus on himself.

The tinted shades look like an affectation but actually serve a purpose: it's very useful for bargaining when browsing junk shops and flea markets if the proprietor can't tell what his gaze lingers on.

Fe4BLdq.png
His assistant in running the business is a massive yeti. While Shea's own size is more than effective at parting crowds, yetis are an unusual enough sight that it provides valuable help in reducing haggling time and safeguarding purchases. If anyone asks, it's there to carry the bags. (Really. Bipedal form is much more efficient at that than quadrupedal. It can carry a lot of bags.)

Shea travels often and extensively, staying wherever's convenient when he needs to rest, and as Wanderin has become a bit of a landmark it was natural he eventually found himself there and discovered it an excellent hub to build a permanent office. Unfortunately, yetis are an unusual sight even in the highest mixed-flight territory and windies are curious.

Yetis are mysterious. An intelligent but reclusive race. Individuals sometimes go among other societies for reasons unknown. When one contracts to do business it invariably chooses to be employed by someone else, not for itself.

Yeti names are either untranslatable or possibly just literal grunts meant to indicate that asking such a personal question is offensively rude and only being answered with a refusal so that the asker will understand to go away. Ask a yeti its gender and the answer is "private."

Individuals a yeti trusts may conceivably know more about that yeti, but no one who would ever breathe a word to anyone else would ever be trusted. Shea knows absolutely nothing no one else does. They have a business arrangement with a contract that specifies no questions. There is no point in asking anything, no matter who does, no matter what the reason.

Except the single public fact that for business purposes, Shea's assistant goes by Badger.

A recently made pillow does not fall anywhere under the wing of product Shea moves. But it can serve as a nice cushion to display something small for a customer's examination, so yes, thank you, Remy.

OBhq1K9.png
____ The new member of Earthshaker's children who named himself Earnest seemed so happy to be able to introduce himself, to meet the astounded dragons who had come to search for signs of Earthshaker's passage and gotten more than they had thought to imagine, with his purpose, but distress began to cloud his unguarded expressive face as he looked around.

"You're missing something," an Earth volunteer nearby diagnosed, and the obelisk's focus turned to him with gratitude.

"Yes. Yes I...'m komainu, I think. Yes. I'm partnered, meant not to work alone, I just... don't know who to share..."

The ridgeback observed that the obelisk's searching gaze swept over all the crowd visible in the subterranean chamber, the ranks of volunteers as much as the other Handmade, which made him ask, "Is it anyone who would do?"

The obelisk seemed puzzled on how to answer the question. "It's someone who would choose. So any one, but not at all."

"Do they have to share your purpose?"

The purple-patchworked obelisk's massive brows furrowed as his chin came down to rest atop his stacked fists. "Purpose, goal, meaning, pursuit... I'm to help Papa Earthshaker. We should try to get ready. It wouldn't... well, ready wouldn't be if everyone did the same thing as each other for it, right?"

"Sensible to me," the ridgeback agreed, angling his wing carefully out of the way as a smaller dragon in the crowd swooped by. "My job is finding things, by connecting to people who know and by looking myself. Does that sound compatible?"

"...Yes," breathed the obelisk, wondering eyes lit up with excitement. "That would, we could be good, does this sound right to you? Do you want to?"

"I like what I do, and a lot of it's always the same, but my favorite part is looking for new. And I've not done much until now to serve our papa. This sounds like a worthy adventure."

"Then we're partners!"

The obelisk stretched out to butt his muzzle against the horn the ridgeback turned down to meet him, the swirls of magic still saturating the chamber coalesced in a rushing sweep of power, and two obelisks were left staring blankly at each other.

Earnest's mouth worked uselessly for a long moment before he managed to squeak out, "...did not... know... that could happen?"

"Same." The former ridgeback carefully spread his new wings, taking in their changed shape and musculature, and was distracted by curls as his head moved.

"...Sorry? I'm sorry—"

"If Earthshaker decided this is better, I don't think it behooves me to argue." Two padded, clawed toes of a furred paw gently closed on a curl of mane and tugged, then let go in favor of fascinated flexing. "I have always been curious about soft-hide living. Suppose a good buff probably isn't the treatment for all this dust anymore."

"Do you think... maybe it is a partner thing, because we agreed? I know things, Papa shared. But I haven't lived any you have. Just this, and now this is new to you..."

"Hmm. A good balance, or as fair as can be had in the circumstances. I'll take it. But if that's the case..."

The new komainu separated briefly to spread awareness between their respective groups of what new partnerships might involve, then came back together to discuss their own next steps and future plans while the expedition's leaders handled what would happen in terms of the immediate.

"Do you suppose that stoneshape thing can happen to me too now?" Sachet asked.

"I... think... maybe, if I help you with it? But I don't know if you could shift out of it on your own, so we'd better avoid it or practice..."

"I have a shopfront in Wind territory, do you think an established location will be useful or will you mostly travel..."

"Your hair's going to fall all over your face in the wind like that, no you can do this too just have to learn to manage three hanks at a time, but your fingers can do it..."
"...Alright. This is silly, but I'll admit it. I want to learn all the hairstyles."

"...I want to see everything. Do you think there will be time?"

"...Then this is our pact. We work together, even when we're separated. We share what we need and remember what we want, help each other when we can, and further each other's work. We enjoy life, we learn new experiences, and we serve Earthshaker."
