Communication is the lifeblood of any organism (in this case, lair). Block up a passage or interrupt the flow of information and key systems start dying or come to a halt. Clear channels result in smooth daily operation and everything working in harmony.

Except when disparate systems have conflicting methods or aims, but that's not his problem. Who is he? Obviously the postmaster.

As Wanderin grew a single dragon with a mailbag was no longer sufficient to keep up with the rate of messages to be picked up and delivered, so he worked with Thing and Swamprat to design and build the pressurized tube systems that now span every level and cranny of the lair, delivering every letter dropped inside to the central office to be sorted and then dispersing them to the correct location. It is simple in concept and fiendish in execution, a marvel of engineering to sit at the heart of and watch dance in perfect operation to his direction.

(Packages, obviously, don't fit in the mail tubes, so those still require hand delivery, but a small flock of mail carriers can keep up with those. Many dragons consider it a good temporary job for fledglings to teach them responsibility and familiarize them with the whole lair.)

There are of course occasional breakdowns. Thing very meticulously designed the system to be robust so any problems are usually caused by someone being careless. Maestro deals with those by summoning Swamprat or Epcot to repair the actual break while personally pinpointing the cause and ensuring they learn to care better then on.

Of course he was around before the aethers' crash landing unscheduled reentry to Sornieth. He just took one look at them and knew, as you sometimes do, exactly what he wanted and what was right for him. And it is, even after research to make an educated decision and be sure.

Concerns get expressed over the whole eating-paper tendency when newcomers learn the postmaster is an aether. Nope, that's fine. He's allergic.

Concerns get expressed over someone who's allergic to paper being the postmaster. That's fine too, his skin isn't sensitive to it he only has a reaction if ingested. (Well, inhaling smoke from burning paper could also be problematic, but no one around has reason to burn paper, particularly with aethers now available to eat it instead.)
9clB2dm.png Aethers like him. He likes aethers. That still doesn't let any of them convince him to give them the job of post office paper shredder. Roz already holds that role and is efficient, experienced, and utterly confidential seeing as it can't read or speak. Plus isn't particularly fast or mobile in getting to paper that isn't meant for destruction.

The post office, being the beating heart and central hub of all non-verbal communication in the lair, hosts a bulletin board wall open for notices from all comers and goers. Now that the Waychips have assimilated most such notices for faster more effective spread, what remains is public displays of art: past postage stamps, thank you notes, and hatchies' scribbled drawings.

Remy had wanted to gift a pillow in commemoration of the post office's opening (actually of the first time he found the post office, seeing as it was already open), but got his tails twisted over the details of the paper thing. It turns out pillows can be made from paper.

Maestro solved all problems by sealing the pillow in a display box with a plaque reading "In Case of Emergency, Do Not Break Glass." (And a second plaque reading "In Case of Nonemergency, Do Not Break Glass.")
