S O R A
"It has occurred to me that I am alone in the endeavor of conformity. The mages and soldiers threaten my every step just as the very superiors above me dictate my mind shouldn’t be on such frivolous ideals. If my mind can’t go to neither the spiritual nor the innovative, then where can it go?”

Sora was raised just like any middle class family of the Bay is raised: a mixture of prejudice, scolding and buying presents every Christmas leads to a perfect little girl practically perfect for white collar careers. That, of course, was Sora. Her two, proud parents cried and hugged her as she boarded the vehicle and found herself far away from her homeland. On the other side of the continent, she remained in a new area, the Grace Forests.

The one that interned her? A steady man, a Coatl named Harrwell. He spoke almost as much as he nagged and, in her time under his internship, always felt as if she was more of a glorified secretary than the upcoming declaration of scientific minds. She grabbed coffee, not sets of data, and fared herself well to the same conversation every other week:

“Mr. Fennegry, sir. May I ask how this attains to science?”

“Are you questioning my qualifications, girl? Now get me that soup and pronto!”

Needless to say, the other interns paid her hardly any mind as well. They were from the poor, none even scraping the middle class, all in favor of an initiative the S.E.A. created for the impoverished. As soon as she admitted her origins, they became a bit less accustomed to her. Who could blame them? There was a bit of a stigma around the rich, and for good reason. She wouldn’t pry if that was their choice.

In a fit of boredom, confusion and passion, she did the only thing she was told not to do: investigate the forests. The first thing she found? Animals. Her parents were never fond of animals, so it was a pleasant surprise.

As it got dark, however, she snuck back into the facility. The euphoria of going out there was beautiful, and it felt like a way to connect towards the science that towered her. She could study on her own now— a case sorry of the great Grace Forests said to be of Magic’s hearth, and nothing could stop her.

Once day, though, her trip was different. Instead of the occasional animal and faux experiment, she found a dancing spiral instead. He seemed to be guiding something towards him in happiness. And with awe, she watched. Her family knew of magic, but at this rate, it was practically extinct and couldn’t be used by anyone but select indigenous dragons. So seeing it up close? What a beautiful thing. She watched as he traversed the tiny sparkles of yellow light through the dark blue and purple woods, giggling and whispering as if they themselves had voices.

Then he looked at her.

Like a deer in headlights, she stared, then held the courage to run. As soon as she made it back into the facility,’she tried to tell her coworkers about what happened. After all, there weren’t supposed to be anyone there but the research team. Each and every one of them thought she may have been delusional, but she knew better.

Eventually, though, her curiousity got the better of her. Weeks after the incident, she came back, only to see nothing. Believing it was all a dream of a disillusioned dragoness, she trotted backwards.

Then, a face popped in front of her.

His name? ‘Lester’, the same spiral that she saw all of those weeks ago.

She lowered her gaze, eyes peeping towards his own. “Are you… the same man I saw before?”

He blinked, and in such a soft voice that even a butterfly could break his silk, he muttered, “I believe that I am, yes.”

She doesn’t know much on what happened since then. It seemed… spontaneous. What they did together, what they learned about one another, what they exchanged. She even made new friends, ones she would have never met otherwise, a nation that the very institution she worked in illegally built near. At first, they were understandably hesitant, but after a while, she became friends with the majority of them. Now, her life is in confliction. A child is on the way, but what can she do? The odds are against her, and there’s only so much time in a day…

80631783p.png LESTER (Lover) - “Do you remember when we first met? You let me see the spirits, as I was curious. When you did, I rushed to tell my superiors immediately, but you grabbed my hand and told me not to. Now you barely even say a word without my approval. You don’t feel bad for that, do you? I understand you just didn’t want your home exposed to them.”

EBhOcRD.jpg LESTER’S SIBLINGS - “He has spoken so much about them that they’re practically my honorary brothers as well. I wonder just where they are, though. Shouldn’t they live here?

62331459p.png OKLAHOMA (Friends) - “What a nice woman. Your beverages remind me of the warm summer days I held with my grandmother, bless her soul.“

82777580p.png VOLYNO (Acquaintances) - “You used to hate me, do you remember that? I certainly do. Until then, a Snapper had never pinned me before! Needless to say, I won’t needlessly go out of line again. I do hope you’re doing well.”

84207858p.png AMANI (Acquaintances) - “We don’t have too much in common, but I’m glad that Oklahoma is set on helping you. I can help when you need it, as well. I’m only a forest away.”

66162417p.png IACCHUS (Acquaintances) - “Oh, how I miss you two. I wonder how the treasury is holding up?”

83184663p.png IARER (Acquaintances) - “I remember that, as a child, you’d urge me to wear black, as it brought out my eyes. Then, my mother would always say, “her eyes never fit her looks too much anyway” and push me away. What great times. Perhaps one day I’ll wear such a color.”
