An astronomer and an astrologer are an unusual pair, but Pickering and Leavitt make it work by both being uncommonly academic. Surrounded by seas of treatises and articles, their hatchlings learn to thrive on a healthy diet of organized chaos with a sprinkling of absolute awe for the universe.

With their parents teaching them the individual stars in each constellation and the finest points of a well-crafted rebuttal statement, these children are well-prepared for a life devoted to learning about something. Some choose to follow their mother’s scientific bent, and others are led down the more mystic path of their father, but all of them can be found on a cloudless night recounting the stories of the stars.

In a family so full of academics and odd ducks, it’s difficult for anyone to manage the status of black sheep of the family, but Calliope fancies herself one. To be fair, her parents don’t truly understand her desire to be an artist, and while they don’t disapprove per se, a lack of disappointment isn’t the same as pride in her goals. In her opinion, she doesn’t get why her parents don’t understand that the joy in the universe her parents express through lengthy (boring) articles is the same delight she expresses through poetry. As she’s grown, they’ve settled into a polite impasse, where her parents avoid suggesting more “productive” passions, and Calliope refrains from pointing out how many run-on sentences were in their latest articles. The truce sort of works, but Calliope’s still itching to get out of the house and explore the world.
