Unbeknownst to Malakai, Magisa has been keeping samples from his recovery. Using these samples and a great deal of her own magic, she attempts to do something forbidden to dragonkind: she creates a homunculus in her own image. It almost works. Clathrus is able to stand on intervals, but more often than not, he lacks the rigidity. It is a long while, too, before he's able to comprehend language or speak. Magisa is on the verge of considering him a failure and starting over when he asks, very politely, to be taken to the gardens.

His introduction to the rest of the clan goes better than expected. The Polareis dragons are already well used to Tanzi's slimy nature, and assume Clathrus suffers a similar hatch defect. Magisa quickly agrees with them, and Clathrus cautiously stays silent. They secure a mechanical exoskeleton to help with his weak bones and muscles. Over the course of the next couple weeks, she creates a narrative that he was abandoned in the nest for his slimy defect, and that's why he's unaware of social norms. Clathrus does his best to catch up, wanting more than anything to be a real dragon and not... whatever he actually is.

But when the clan explosively divides, his hope of living a normal life goes up in flames with it. Re-settled near the Forbidden Portal, Magisa comes clean about her experiments. She gains Hemlock and Venia's support, and Clathrus is exposed for the construct he is. While he expects to be shunned for the nature of his existence, this doesn't come to pass. Rather, it is his fragile constitution that seems to be more of an issue. He learns to be as helpful as he can to Magisa's research, fearing that if he becomes irrelevant, it will not be long before he is unmade as well.

His only solace comes from Amity's attention. Her curiosity towards him turns to pitiful affection as she watches his desperate attempts to make himself important. Latching onto this affection, Clathrus becomes convinced that Amity will be his salvation.
