Malakai, like many dragons in his clan of origin, hatches with no scales. Lacking their protection, his translucent skin is easily damaged, and takes considerable time to heal. However, this does not keep him away from battle. For each injury he receives, his very bones grow protective plates, covering the tender flesh in a rapidly expanding exoskeleton. The more he fights, the more he wins, and the greater his hunger for battle becomes.

His sense for impending conflict has led him to the Polareis clan. Out of his element among the multitude of magic-users, he covers for his nervousness with even more confrontational behavior. To the surprise of many other dragons in the clan, Cilla does not ask him to leave, instead gently mediating between him and his targets. As his attempts to start fights repeatedly fell flat, he grew restless.

His only outlet is to become the subject of a mage named Magisa. As she puts his regenerative abilities to the test, he rises eagerly to each challenge, certain that he is becoming stronger. When all out battle erupts suddenly in the clan, Malakai followed Magisa's directions out of habit, and became one of the deciding forces in Hemlock's victory. Now settled near the Forbidden Portal, Malakai's time is divided between helping Magisa and patrolling the area, dispatching any monsters that get too close to the lair. While he enjoys this position over the clan's previous state, he longs for the next battle to arrive.
