The Deceived

MALIK (mal-ick)
Even with the loss of her child, Eclair's ambition to mold a child into her perfect image was far from over, even if that child wouldn't be her own flesh and blood. She had happened upon an unguarded nest within the Tangled Wood. Without even the slightest hesitation, she snatched one of the eggs and fled.

When the hatchling came out of the egg, she was both delighted and disgusted. His coloring was just so bright... She kept him close though, and he soon attached himself to her. After all, she was his mother as far as he knew. He was her son, and he would to be the one to help her become the proper leader. He would be the one to show everybody how she should be the one in charge.

She named this child Malik, and two remained isolated within the Tangled Wood for many years, Eclair raised the hatchling, his once bright coloring began to dull with age, as if the shadows of the Tangled Woods themselves were staining his hide, much to Eclair's delight.

He remained easy to manage throughout his youth, he occasionally had questions about who his father was, but she had already planned for such inquiries. She simply told him that he was a great Guardian who had died for the Shadowbinder's cause. Even though that was not the truth, Malik fully believes it, and uses it to strengthen his motivation for doing the Shadowbinder's will. He had no reason to take anything she told him as anything less then gospel. She was his mother, after all.

So when Eclair had told him of the plan to eliminate the Plague Flight, the only reasoning behind why being "The Shadowbinder wills it", Malik obediently followed.

Within the first Plague clan they infiltrated, Malik proceeded to carry out his orders: Blend in and search for the clan's weaknesses. It was then when he ran into her.

UnNithel was another Guardian around his age, and when the news of a new Guardian coming into the clan reached her ears, she understandably wanted to make friends. Malik decided to try and tolerate this. After all, mother had told him to blend in.

But as time passed, he slowly found himself getting distracted from his mission, enjoying UnNithel's company...Though at the same time, she was starting to scare him.

She was showing him a life completely different to the one his mother had taught him, and coming up with questions he had never thought of asking. He was slowly starting to internally question things he had been taught as a hatchling...

Normaly, he would write off such accusations as blaspheme from a nonbeliever...Except, UnNithel's companion: A Gloomwillow Guide...

Mother had always told him stories about how Gloomwillow Guides were beings that would lead the Shadowbinder's children to the truth...But with some different messages...How could his mother's word of the Shadowbinder be true, at the same time as UnNithel's...?

THE JUDGE

Soon after Malik's hatching, Eclair started to notice the bear following them, watching from afar.

At first, Eclair was delighted at this. A Murktooth Bramblekeep watching over them? What an honer! Surly this was a blessing from the Shadowbinder herself!

But slowly, that delight turned into envy and frustration. After the first few days of seeing it, the silent bear seemed to refuse to even acknowledge Eclair's existence, always staring right though her as if she were a ghost, and refusing to even linger near her, but seeming to have no problem being around Malik.

Unknown to the two of them, this bear isn't just any regular Murktooth Bramblekeep. No. This being, only known to the most primitive of beasts as "The Judge", is one of the Tangled Wood's most feared creatures. This bear does not come out of hiding unless a great disturbance has occurred to wake it from its slumber, to which it will pursue the cause of the disturbance, and ultimately pass judgment on them.

Some tales say that The Judge is always followed by an ally: The Executioner, a being who "removes" those that The Judge frowns upon, though no one has ever seen the being, or even knows what it looks like.

And now, The Judge has left his forest, following Malik and Eclair into the Scarred Wasteland. The beasts of the Tangled Wood grow uneasy, this is not a good sign...
