The Death card predicted great change for Promise's life. As one of the first Obelisks awakened from stone by the will of the Earthshaker, that much was already true.

Change came a second time when harpies sought adopters for hatchlings that had come into their territory. So Aubergine passed into Promise's care.

The clan Promise had been residing with were migrating in groups across the thousand sea. Promise, Aubergine and others were at sea, when the ship was attacked by the pirate vessel the Bellowing Kraken. Promise led the passengers' stand against the pirates, and the mighty Obelisk caught the eye of Yersinia the pirate captain.
Yersinia offered to spare the passengers thanks to Promise's bravery in battle, but the Obelisk knew that wouldn't be enough. She challenged the pirate to a duel for the freedom of her fellow passengers. Yersinia approved.

Promise fought well, but ultimately was no match for the veteran pirate. Yersinia took what wealth the ship was carrying, and told Promise that she acquitted herself well enough to spare passengers and crew if the Obelisk joined her.
At this time Aubergine was old enough to have stood part of the wall of dragons preventing the pirates from reaching the more vulnerable dragons aboard. The Snapper strode forward and placed herself at her adoptive mother's side, demanding to also go.
Aubergine declared she had a good weather eye that would aid the pirates, and returned every assessing look with a steely eye of ice.

So it was the two joined the crew of the Bellowing Kraken.

Promise worked aboard the ship, and continued to try reign in the worst of Yersinia's tendencies. The Ridgeback enjoyed her spirit. In time Promise discovered the pirate was not wholly unredeemable. Yersinia only cheated other cheaters, and while she was a harsh taskmaster, she was not deaf to the needs of her crew. Merely quiet about the little gifts.
In time, Yersinia won Promise's loyalty, and the Obelisk became the ship's first mate.
In time, the two started dancing on the deck by moonlight.

It was a passion aboard the seas, but one that guttered out like a torch in a storm.

Yersinia became restless, distracted and distant, snapped more often.
After a meeting with an oracle, the Ridgeback suddenly announced she was returning to the shore and kissing the sea goodbye.
It was at this moment that Promise realised that their love couldn't last. A passing fancy, sweet while it was there.
The Obelisk stayed at sea as the crew split, and wished the Ridgeback goodbye. Yersinia showed tears only to Promise. She was not stone, but understood that what they were had come to the end. Perhaps it had for a while, and was only going through the formality that day.

So Promise became captain of the Bellowing Kraken.
