~Strength is overcoming weakness, as courage is overcoming fear.~
The Contractor
The Ridgeback has a commanding presence, partly due to her accustomed speaking volume, which many mistake for being other than her 'indoor voice'. She considers such a silly concept at any rate.
This and her weatherworn scales speaks of a long life spent in the outdoors.
Yersinia appears relatively unphased by water, her early years having been spent as deckhand, later captain, of a pirate ship. She and her crew roamed the waves of the Tidelord's realm, stealing, fighting and merrymaking as they pleased. On many days, order and banter had to be bellowed above the winds to be heard.
Only the oracle themselves could know for sure whether the prophecy was true, or a skilled fabrication to divert the pirate's pillaging away from their waters. Regardless, Yersinia's path took a turn after that meeting. The oracle whispered, drawing her in with insights of her past, promising knowledge of the pirate's future. The hushed seer spoke of the Plaguebringer's desire for a champion. One who would be the scourge of the wretches who clung to unnatural life, hunter of the aberrant dregs of the Shade.
The Ridgeback had been becoming bored of her old hunting grounds, her hold bloated with treasure. She'd been looking for something...inspiring. The oracle's tale brought a smile to her face. It had been some time since she'd last seen the Scarred Shores. There was no mortal authority she respected, but perhaps it was worth gifting the mother of rot a daring year or few for the years of pleasure the pirate had enjoyed.
Yersinia doffed her hat, and left oracle and crew their lives, if not the wealth already plundered. After the necessary haggling, the Ridgeback and those who'd follow her parted ways with those who remained on the seas. One parting in particular put a lump in her throat and tears almost never seen down the Ridgeback's countenance.
The first hunt was long and tedious, alleviated by learning the challenges of the realm and encounters with its denizens (whose rumours were needed in their search). Though the Scarred Wasteland is hardly the most fragrant and comely of locales, the life-violating wretches stirred such a revulsion in those who beheld it, re-kindling her passion into rage.
Even as she lost companions, her adroitness grew, and she found quarries all the quicker.
One particular abomination's trail led the Ridgeback's crew to the edge of the tundra. It was in this snowy realm, after that quarry had been driven from the mortal plane, that she came to learn that not all held the unwavering detest for the undead which she did.
Members of SHI, pacifiers of restless souls, watched Yersinia's progress, having learnt of her work in the Wasteland.
Even now, she's still puzzled by that night. When a hatchling spread her frail little wings, standing between the towering Ridgeback, and the murmuring wisp of soulstuff.
The Soul Hunters Initiative attempted to rein in the hunter, having seen her strike at malevolent and benevolent soul alike...
These days, age has mellowed the Ridgeback somewhat, who offers her strength as a contractor: bearing heavy cargo, construction and the like. Yersinia often lairs with a hospitable clan in the vicinity of her work. The Benighted Bailiwick SHI Bureau kept records of her, which was inherited by the Veiled Phoenix, in case the services of a hunter of visitors from beyond should be required.
