GentleBreeze gazed down at the strange egg nestled at her feet, her brow furrowed with worry. Tantras and Nightshade stood by her side, concern written on their features as they all contemplated their curious predicament.

The egg was wrapped in a dense layer of seaweed, most likely to protect it from the elements while on its journey here. Phorcys, the father of the hatchling inside, had deposited the egg at GentleBreeze’s feet mere hours ago, begging the kind-hearted leader to take care of the Gaoler lurking inside its shell. Of course, GentleBreeze agreed without hesitation, but she found Phorcys’ second request harder to stomach. The sea god had made it clear that the hatchling could never know of its past, could never learn the identity of its biological parents. GentleBreeze disliked the idea of lying, but in the end she had agreed. It would be a difficult promise to keep, but she was determined to honor the sea gods desperate request.

Schwall, so named for the literal and metaphorical torrent of events that had brought him to his new clan, was a rambunctious but instantly likable hatchling. Asifah, the clan’s hatchling caretaker and (unbeknownst to him) Schwall’s biological sister, had taken to the little male immediately and doted on him endlessly. Despite being spoiled rotten by his sister, Schwall never let this special treatment go to his head, always maintaining an air of humility and openness with everyone he met. Mischief and Mayhem, both Schwall’s siblings themselves, were constantly trying to corrupt the youngster and drag him along on their chaotic adventures, but Schwall was not often swayed by their trickery, and eventually they lost interest in the pure-hearted male.

Although she never told him the truth about his past or about their true relationship, Asifah continued to love and care for her brother long after he left the clan’s nursery. Schwall could never explain why, but he felt a certain connection with Asifah that he had felt with no one else, and considered her his sister by choice, oblivious to the fact she was also his sister by blood. In their free time, the siblings would go for long swims in the ocean together, simply enjoying one another’s company. Whenever Asifah talked about her past-- the rocky outcrop where she had grown up with her siblings, the ancient sea god and goddess who were her parents-- her descriptions were so vivid, Schwall almost felt like he had been there too, that perhaps her parents may have been his as well. It was an absurd idea, or so he thought, but he had never known his true parents, and a part of him was desperate to believe that Asifah was truly the sister he had always felt she was.
