Ietepere is the source and first victim of a mysterious Arcane disease that causes crystals to grow in her body -- and causes eggs to spawn around her. While her children are not contagious as she is, exposure to Ietepere causes their crystals to grow, so her assistant Carmichael sends them far away, where they’ll be safe.

Naris was the first of Ietepere's children to explore his condition as not an affliction, but a talent. He realized that it granted him strange, powerful, unique magic; he could interface with the very fabric of reality, performing spells that his mother could not even understand, let alone undertake. He would have stayed at her side longer if he could, progressing his condition in an attempt to increase his power, but Ietepere and Carmichael forced him to leave for his own good.
