Once, Ietepere was a simple researcher, studying infectious disease, as you do in Plague Flight. Then a meteor hit the ground near her lab. When Ietepere went to investigate, she found the area infused with Arcane energy. Perhaps there was still time to turn back, but Ietepere didn't; she was too curious, too much of a scientist. Instead she kept walking.

Some time later, Ietepere returned to consciousness to discover that her lab assistant, Carmichael, had rescued her from the meteor's environs -- at a cost. Soon, Ietepere began to develop crystal growths throughout her body. Though mostly painless, the growths seemed to cause all magic brought or cast near them to go haywire. Despite the headaches and visions that came with the growths, Ietepere believed she would be able to continue with her research. Then the crystals started to grow on her possessions. Then on Carmichael.

Plague dragons aren't always big on quarantines. If a disease gets out, then that is the Plaguebringer's will. But this was nothing of Plague, Ietepere knew -- this was clearly some Arcane aberration that would bring no glory to her goddess, only suffering to her followers. So Ietepere declared the area around the meteor and her lab a quarantine zone, cutting off all contact with other dragons -- except Carmichael, who already shared her fate.

Only later did Ietepere discover that new crystals started to grow around her -- crystals in the shapes of eggs, and then dragons. Through extensive testing, Ietepere discovered that these hatchlings do not carry contagion; Ietepere herself is the single, only source of the infection, which grows stronger in dragons exposed to her. Thus, it is not only safe but vital to send these hatchlings out into the world, as staying near their mother would progress their infections.
