 Carmichael says he doesn't blame Ietepere, the scientist under which he studied infectious diseases, for his fate, but it is unarguably her fault. If Ietepere hadn't gone to investigate a meteor that fell near her lab -- if Carmichael hadn't ventured close to the meteor to rescue her when she fell sick with Arcane radiation -- if he hadn't been in close contact with her in the days after ...

After Ietepere began to grow crystals from her skin, and inside her body, it was several days before Carmichael exhibited the same symptoms. Neither of them know, to this day, whether Carmichael's case came from the meteor itself or from exposure to an infected Ietepere.

However, Carmichael discovered through research that while Ietepere might be contagious, he is not, and nor are the eggs that mysteriously spawn around Ietepere. In fact, further exposure to Ietepere causes the crystals in Carmichael and in the hatchlings to grow. Carmichael stays with Ietepere, limiting his exposure as much as possible but acting as her liaison with the world outside, while he sends the hatchlings away for their safety.

Truly, he must not resent Ietepere, if he stays with her.
