B I O G R A P H Y

Ever the odd one out amongst the fashionable Lanternlea youth, Alesinde gladly agreed to join her parents in their expedition to Old Kjalla. Ales is a dreamer who can almost imagine the streets of the Kjallan ruins restored to their ancient former glory as she undertakes her frequent strolls throughout the city. She often meets Kjallan citizens on her wanderings, and is curious to learn the ins and outs of the city from them, much to her insulated mother's dismay. She is particularly taken by the reserved young Aurumancer Orpheus, who is often torn between his desire to share knowledge with her and his promise to the High Priestess to remain discreet about his research.

Though usually not combative in nature, Alesinde has been surprisingly resistant to her mother's suggestions that they return to Lanternlea. On her walks through Kjalla, she is often struck with the feeling that she belongs there.

EXCERPT FROM ALES'S NOTEBOOK

"I had the same dream again.

It keeps happening, ever since I arrived here. A great dragon falls and is engulfed by smaller ones, like a swarm of voracious insects. Molten gold begins pooling in the streets, flowing as swiftly as mercury. I feel triumphant, yet I also want to curl up and cry.

I found a courtyard in the garden district that felt eerily familiar this morning. It was all choked up with overgrown bougainvillea and jasmine, but the seams between the cobblestones...I could picture rivulets of liquid gold running through them.

It was the place from the dream. I'm sure of it.

How is that possible? Perhaps I have been to Kjalla before. Maybe mother and father took me here when I was young, and those latent memories remain in my mind. They've never mentioned such a trip, but we've been on many similar expeditions since I was a hatchling. Perhaps they simply forgot."
