Though her wealthy family has resided in Lanternlea Port for many generations, Lady Iraina Redtail traces her heritage back to Kjallabai, where her ancestors fled some ancient disaster which befell the kingdom long ago. She shared the childhood tales she was told of the magical city of Kjalla with her mate, Maur, which lead to his eventual decision to seek the city out and restore it to glory.

Iraina herself much prefers the lively, cosmopolitan Lanternlea to the dour remains of Kjalla, which she considers distant indeed from the elegant imaginary city of her childhood. Despite this, she is a shrewd trader who recognizes the potential riches associated with Maur's attempted revival, and because of this she has been happy to indulge his interest in the city for a time.

Recently, however, she has begun to sense increasing scrutiny from the Kjallan nobility on her and her family. Worried for her daughter Alesinde, she wishes to return to Lanternlea, far from the hostile gaze of the Kjallan court.

That fair kingdom is the most beautiful in the world thanks to its sorcerers blessed by the Lightweaver herself. Their magic makes the flowers bloom more vibrantly in Kjalla than anywhere else. Petals and perfume drift from the queen's lush garden through all the streets of the isle. Dragons bearing enchanted lanterns parade over the elegant bridges to and from the cliff passageways each evening in thankfulness for their wonderful kingdom and their noble Aurumancers. At the end of the day, when they all return to their homes, there is, of course, an ample feast of fish, poultry, and fruit for every one of them, fresh from the bountiful river and orchards.
