"You are here for a purpose," he said. "Come closer, and I will tell you." Silence stretched. "Dad? What is this about?" The King's eyes thinned, and his lips pulled back in a snarl. "Be silent, girl. Listen to your father. I have spoken with the Lord on High, and He told me that you will bring ruin to our nation, that you will curse my line forevermore. You have come too close to the Scarlet, and you will not live to regret it." "Dad," said Wedja once more, "what's this about?" The King raised his hand, and she flinched, but he merely gestured at his daughter, who took her place at his side like a shadow. "Silence!" he hissed. The King stabbed Wedja in the chest, and she fell to her knees, staring at the King in disbelief. The King laughed, and the sound was like a spike of metal through flesh. "Dad…why? I-I did what you said! I obeyed your will! I didn't go near the Scarlet! I—" "Silence!" the King bellowed, his massive scarred body writhing. His smile sharpened. "You have served your purpose. Your sister lives, and your failure is mine no longer." Her trapped her by the neck and began to slowly twist, her body jerking with the motion. Thickened blood spilled from her mouth, and her eyes bulged, their color shifting as her life faded from her. When she stopped moving altogether, the King released her. The King and his daughter stood together in silence, and as the girl's body became nothing but a stain on the ground, her father gave a satisfied laugh. |
