With her ethereally soft colors, her small, lithe form, and her unusually expansive, shimmering wings, Jiya is an exquisite creature. She moves with gliding grace, and though her manner is quiet and demure, it somehow captures the viewer’s attention, its sweet simplicity more compelling than any showy display. The high society of Terraclae considers her a charming naïf—how fortunate for her to be living with Foma, who can provide her with so many cultural and social opportunities, and how delightful for Foma to have such a lovely companion! In reality, Jiya is hardly just a simple ingenue, and her position is more complicated than most realize. She’s the daughter of one of Foma’s associates, the mage Lakeisha, and her stay in Terraclae is only partly to receive a finishing education and to enjoy the experience of living among the city’s elite. Foma is charmed by her, yes, but also sees advantage in keeping Lakeisha’s daughter close—a little extra leverage, should Lakeisha ever try to break away from their relationship. For her part, Lakeisha is of two minds about the situation. On one claw, she dislikes losing control over her daughter and has concerns about what Foma might learn from her. On the other, Jiya’s observations might provide valuable insight into Foma’s intentions, and it’s not as though Jiya knows all that much about Lakeisha’s research anyway. Between these two formidable dragons, Jiya threads her own way, her keen intelligence masked by her innocent smiles. She has more magic than Foma realizes and more sophistication than Lakeisha suspects—she knows the power of secrets, when to hold them close and how best to exploit them, and whatever information she gleans, she intends to make use of on her own terms. For the time being, though, she’s mainly focused on enjoying her new life and absorbing everything around her. The city is a fascinating place, especially for someone who grew up in an isolated settlement—she knows she has so much to discover, and she’s eager to learn all that she can.
