Mulberry had been seeking a clan to protect, as was his natural instinct, but he was still young and had not undergone any battle training. He was too much of a novice for most seasoned clans, and when he found one, newly formed and full of similarly untrained dragons, he felt wanted. He still felt lacking. As he grew closer to the other clan members and made firm friends, he felt guilt at his inability to provide the protection he ought to.

But then Conch managed to enlist the services of two seasoned warriors from another clan, Arcturus and Chiffchaff, to train her and Mulberry took their guidance too. They saw the strength of his natural flight, and tutored him slightly differently. Mulberry quickly graduated into a fully-fledged Mire Flyer which would enable him to help other dragons grow stronger too.

He immediately went to the sister clan in the Highland Scrub to lend his services to his Gaoler friends there. They had no trained warriors, and Mulberry was comfortable leaving Conch in defence of their territory for a few days.

Upon his return, his good friend Kara gathered his mane in her claws in surprise. She was usually a very reserved dragon.

"Mulberry! Your mane is silver! It's lovely," she quickly reassured, stepping back and keeping her hands to herself, clearly self conscious at invading someone's personal space.

The change was undoubtedly an effect of magical influence, training in areas heavy with magical atmosphere, against beastclans with powerful mages. He was proud of his new silver mane. It was a sign of his victories and experience.

"I'm a Warrior now," he declared with confidence for the first time.

Mulberry had long been a veteran of the coliseum by now, and had frequently been journeying into the Forbidden Portal with Conch and Kashan. They had fought there countless times without incident, which was why it was so concerning when Mulberry collapsed during a battle in which he'd only sustained minor injuries.

They fled to safety, Conch bearing most of Mulberry's weight. He was shuddering and feverish, and it was too much for Conch to take him all the way back to Meristema. The best they could do was find a sheltered spot to rest, and hope Mulberry would come around.

It wasn't until the next evening he was fully conscious, but even then he wasn't himself. He was insensible, animalistic. He didn't even seem to recognise them at first - hunching up and growling at them. He settled eventually, and although he still did not speak, he seemed content to lumber along after them when they continued their journey.

When they finally made it back home, Mulberry slept for an entire day, and when he awoke amongst the warm fur of his mate Sabori and daughter Cookie, he was himself again. Much fuss was made over him still, for Mulberry did much in defense of the clan without complaint or incident, and this scare had highlighted how vital he was to the clan. Everyone wanted to show their appreciation for his work, and offer their aid. Mulberry was deeply touched.

It wasn't until much later that the clan realised he was not entirely better. The following month the same thing happened and luckily Mulberry was at home at the time. Arisa identified it as a curse, triggered by the full moon. There was no known cure, but it didn't seem to harm Mulberry or make him a danger to anyone else. If anything it was even a benefit in the coliseum, where he would be even more fearsome and powerful.

A Renegade Aviar arrives at the clan delivering a rolled scroll to Mulberry then quickly leaving. It looked.. sad. The scroll had water droplets on it but it was still readable.

Father. My time with the Sunfold Sparrows has been great. I've really loved it here so much. I've settled in nicely and just love this clan and everyone in it. The was a large section of water droplets before the writing continued but it started to look shakier and it was a little harder to read. I had a nest with a dragon that I had met. He wooed me very easily and I accepted him as my mate. We had four little eggs and since neither of us had the sickness from before they were supposed to be healthy. Only one egg hatched.. one tiny sickly hatchling barely managed to crawl out of his egg. The others were.. dead in their eggs covered by a sticky blackness. My mate disappeared after the one egg hatched so I am to deal with this pain and try to save my child on my own. The others have been kind enough to offer their help but it's been so hard. My hatchling is barely surviving and I don't know what to do. He regularly coughs up this black mucus substance but he doesn't seem to be in pain. He eats and drinks some but I do not know if he will survive. Please I need your guidance. Help me...

A blue puff of smoke appears, startling Roselin. Luckily her son has finally found sleep, if only through exhaustion, and is not disturbed. My Dearest Roselin,

I enlisted the service of a Plainsrunner in our clan to get this message to you as quickly as possible. We are so heartbroken by your trials, all of us in Meristema. As you know, the loss of children is well known here and felt deeply. Don't you dare blame yourself, you are in enough pain already. I will tell you now none of this is your fault - not the health of your babies or your trust in their father. You must focus on healing, do not let your mind drift to dark places. Such things can feed Shade, or so I hear.

I have spoken with Mau, our healer, to try and send something that might help your son. She says light to chase the darkness, and instructs the following:

  • Take the cap of a Sunshine Stinger (this part has no sting). Use this to line a bowl and make a thick, sweet syrup of honey inside, cooked over a fire of flameweed.
  • Add the wool of a luminous leaf sheep, a handful of feverfew for pain relief, and a glob of incorporeal substance (Mau believes this has the potential to absorb some Shade, or ill effects of it)
  • Grind the luminous almonds into a paste and mix into your honey medicine
  • Finally throw in a spring of the still-burning flameweed, to aid in the explusion of impurities

I sincerely hope this gives some relief to the little one. It is by no means a cure, but it should lessen the pain.

May the Gladekeeper nourish him, the Earthshaker give him strength, the Lightweaver chase away the darkness, and the Arcanist seal it away forever.

Be gentle with yourself, and I'll lend you my strength whenever you need it.
Please, do tell me right away if that dragon shows his face again - I will come to Sunfold myself if need be

- Your loving Father
