Monte was born with significantly underdeveloped wings. As he grew, his wings failed to grow with him, remaining as furled stumps that held no hopes of flying. He didn't mind it, of course; he was born this way! Although the nasty remarks from some bigoted dragons have left him feeling like an outsider on more than one occasion. But other than the length of time it took him to walk distances that took others much less by flying, his disability never truly made an impact in his daily life ... until he discovered his passion for mountain-climbing.

Turns out, wings were quite integral to balancing, especially when balancing precariously on the steep steps of a cliffside. He was good at climbing — a natural at it — but he grew increasingly frustrated with his current limitations. He couldn't climb any real heights without significant worry of teetering off balance and seriously hurting himself. His dream of scaling the mountains of the Southern Icefield was off the table.

So he tried elsewhere. Once he had reached an age of independence, he moved to Dragonhome, and sought a clan he could live with for the time being. There he met Glacio, a fellow Ice dragon, who was happy to show him around and introduce him to his own clan: The Rosebud Clan, which Monte did go on to join after a week spent living amongst them. Now that he was settled in, he could attempt to scale one of Dragonhome's crags by starting from the bottom, thinking that the lack of snow would help his balance, but alas ... he continued to struggle.

Seeing this, Glacio introduced him to Forn, a Snapper with a near-full body prosthetic. After Monte described his troubles, Forn took him to Cinderslag in the Ashfall Wastes, to speak with the smiths who had made his own prosthetics, to make some for his new Tundra friend. They obliged post-haste, and showed Monte some of the wing prosthetics that they already had to offer. But the Tundra seemed distant, and uncomfortable. The smoke and fires and overbearing heat and shades of burning red was too much for him.

So the smiths quickly took measurements and molds, and asked Forn to take Monte back to Dragonhome. That they would have his prosthetics delivered. After several days, Glacio brought a package with Monte's name on it. Deep down, he worried that he would open it to find a pair of wings with flames painted on the side. But he was surprised, when he opened the top, to find well-crafted, ice-themed wing prosthetics. A mold that resembled melting ice, blacks and whites along the top with cyan accents, and a brace that perfectly fit over his stumps and onto his shoulders.

Of course he thanked the smiths personally later that same day, gifting them all the seafood he had caught that week. Then, as soon as he got home, he tried climbing the cliffs of Dragonhome again.

And he did it. He made it from bottom-to-top of the crag in one attempt. He was ecstatic, and spent nearly the entire day after climbing cliffs, from sunrise to the wee hours of the night.

He now has an even bigger goal: Scaling the Cloudscrape Crags. A challenge deemed not only impossible, but surely fatal. Monte isn't in any rush, of course. He'll practice as long as it takes until he's positive that he, without a doubt, can reach the top of the highest mountain in all of Sornieth.
