Biography

Mechanic Resolve, No-Nonsense Repairderg
dragon?did=67551356&skin=0&apparel=23997,1223,19324,19638,21850,32686,24519,606,28026,28150&xt=dressing.png Uh-oh, looks like this steely mechanic wandered a little too far from his home lair (Hyzenthlaay, 452562), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, we'd really appreciate it if you instead could just send him off in the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread. If you don't want another traveler in return, he can be sent to his original home via the Crossroads, or to this rest hub.

You can also adopt him permanently if you don’t want him leaving your lair - just contact Hyzenthlaay and let her know (it’s good for her notes)!

Many people have worked very hard on this traveling dragon, and exalting him would be an absolute shame. Please don’t do it!
In years gone by, perhaps Mechanic Resolve would have brought a crowd to its feet or coveted something as fleeting as fame. Now all this retired clown has time for is real labor - not carousing about a stage the way his parents begged him to. What sort of parent pushes their child into such a thankless job as stage performance, when the real money is be made in the mundane? This was a truth Resolve feels he learned all too late. As he travels Sornieth looking for odd jobs, he is extremely careful with his treasure, barely spending more than a few coins on the cost of food and board. The rest, he meticulously hoards - lest that too go to waste alongside his younger years. Don't expect much of a conversation from him, unless it's strictly business.

Some of the inns he has stayed at report hearing the soft tune of the kalimba floating out of his room at the dead of night, but no such instrument has ever been seen on his person.

Resolve found himself oddly drawn to the dark tunnels of Cragenmire Cavern. Perhaps it was the slowly growing clan's need for a metal worker or perhaps it was the promise of no boarding fees. It was dark and dingy, but with each inch reclaimed by dragonkind, it felt more and more like home. He got to work on metal support beams - cave-ins would be a big no - and helped clear away debris and open up one of the larger caverns into a giant banquet hall. In general, he aided in creating the architecture his hosts were aiming for. Above all, he felt needed. Perhaps all the odd jobs he'd had to do prior to finding Cragenmire Cavern had been worth it. But he knew he couldn't stay forever - as happy as Resolve was, the pay he was receiving for his help was quite low. He wasn't going to spend the rest of his life working for such a low wage.

Resolve found quite a few job opportunities around Crow Callers: cleaning various parts of the clan's territory, taking the familiars for walks, serving refreshments and other accommodations to fellow travellers at the lodge, making some minor repairs - these were a few of his jobs.

He also found love with Sundae, a fellow travelling dragon.

As a way to save some money, Resolve opted to accompany a group of traveling merchants on their way out of the Windsinger's domain. They were friendly towards travelers and allowed him to use one of their tents for free. They even fed him breakfasts and dinners, though lunches he had to figure out on his own.

Resolve took traveling with this group as a sort of vacation. He'd been working odd jobs for so long that he hadn't had the chance (or the means) to relax. Yes, he was still doing odd jobs for the others in the caravan, like helping set up or tear down camp, but it wasn't backbreaking work. And he enjoyed seeing the sights as they passed.

He'd taken a liking to Lorelei, a songstress - Resolve couldn't help but curse his inability to escape the performing arts. He didn't want to associate himself with any more performers. Yet he couldn't help but be captivated by Lorelei's singing every night. They got to talking about the profession, her past, and eventually, his past. They both shared similar childhood pains.

Eventually, the group made it to their first major stop, where Resolve decided he needed to part ways. He said his goodbyes to Lorelei, who gave him a copper necklace. A small gift to remember me by, she told him.

Resolve was suspicious of the residents of the Sunbeam Lanternhouse - they offered him free room and board without strings attached; he was not expected to use his repairing talents, only relax. It made no sense to him - how did an inn stay in business if they charged their guests nothing? When he pressed Kukulcan for an explanation, the answer he got was laughable: they offered a haven to dragons in need. They still needed coin to make that a reality, didn't they?

Before their conversation could turn into a full-blown argument, Helen intervened: she told him the Lanternhouse's water pump had been giving them intermittent problems since MoldyCoffee's visit. With ill grace, he went to take a look at it.

He found it a pretty easy fix, and it made him feel less like a freeloader (not that he told his hosts that).

At least in the Trenchdens clan, the other dragons understood if Resolve wanted to be left alone to his own devices. Further, while they offered up free room and board, they didn't argue when he insisted upon doing something to repay them for the strain on their resources. While the majority of the dragons came from the Water flight, having been born and raised in this lair, there were enough dragons from further afield that they had enough sense to acknowledge that he might not be comfortable freeloading on them.

So, off to work he went. The dragons of the Trenchdens had a good sense of how to safely build the caverns that made the majority of the dens, that didn't mean he couldn't help them learn how to better add in supports and carve out the stone walls so that there wasn't the risk of cave-ins and underwater landslides. Further, he found ways to help build mirrors to better guide the sunlight from the surface further down into the Leviathan trench, using help from the dragons that had originally come from the Light Flight, to then better light up the gardens that were struggling under the ever-present gloom that being so deep under the surface of the ocean caused. He even managed to help get some of the cavernous dens lit, too, for the dragons less used to shadow and watery gloom.

There was even the two young dragons, a pair of Wildclaw siblings, who were convinced that they could create waterproof radios that could work even in the depths of this lair. Their father had worked to try and spread radios across Sornieth, and they wanted to continue that work, if only while they lived here in the Trenchdens. Resolve was bemused as they came to him, and he worked with them on the project for weeks as they tried to come up with something.

Finally, coming up with something after weeks of work, and after more days of testing, Resolve was satisfied with the work. Ayem and Effemm were skilled mechanics, almost as skilled as he was, though that would take time and experience, rather than teaching, and so Resolve decided it was time to move on. Despite not having many expectations when he traveled to this underwater lair, he couldn't help but admit that perhaps the time was not as misspent as he had worried it would be at the start.

@Hyzenthlaay here! This dragon is officially a part of the "Around the World in 365 Dergs" challenge. Check out the thread for information and more travelers like this! ...or just read the following:
  • The general idea is that I am going to create 365 unique traveling dragons, send them off into the world, and see what happens. I'm also going to complete mini-challenges along the way using travelers. If that interests you, consider checking the challenge thread out!
  • I don't want to overflood the system with just my dragons, so adopting travelers from me to live in your lair is totally fine! In fact, I'm betting on it. Just let me know.
  • Always feel free to tell me when you have this dragon in your lair! I love hearing updates.
