"It has to be around here somewhere, Happy," the young Snapper whimpered as she looked down at the map she'd affixed to her familiar's back. The aardvark turned worried eyes to her mistress and silently waited for Deserrae to get her bearings. Night was coming and although Deserrae wouldn't have to worry about getting lost in the darkness with her brightly glowing tail, she would have to worry about getting lost in the lush woods. Or, truthfully, she'd have to worry about becoming more lost in the lush woods.

"What should we do?" Deserrae asked her familiar. Happy replied by turning in place exactly three and a third times, then laying down. Her mistress nodded and said, "Good idea. I'm also tired, and the day's heat just saps my strength." Deserrae dug a shallow hole and settled into its cool embrace as she relaxed. The sunset filled the sky and filtered in through the canopy of leaves and for a moment, Deserrae was stunned at the beauty of the colors that filled the very air around her. Then, even as the sun's last light touched the sky above, the land under the trees was comfortably dark.

"Just a few minutes more," she whispered to her aardvark friend as strange sounds started to fill the air. Deserrae tried to identify the odd noises, and the chirping of crickets was the first sound that she could identify. But what was that strange bark, the one that sounded like a small dog but was from above her? Dogs don't fly, and they don't climb trees! And who was coughing while in the watery swamp to her left?

Deserrae lifted her strong tail high and studied her map, then finally decided they had rested long enough. She roused the sleeping aardvark and pushed through thick underbrush until she found the murky edge of a swamp. "Ok, we can work with this," she murmured to Happy as she confidently turned to her left.

Two hours of sludging through the sticky mud that pulled at her feet, and Deserrae was ready to scream from frustration. She was lost, she was physically drained, and she was defeated. "Maybe this wasn't such a good idea, after all," she whimpered to the exhausted aardvark that was now between the young Snapper's wings. With a sigh, she stood at the place where water and land mingled as she fought off her panic.

"Hi!" A bright voice called out from behind Deserrae. She squeaked in surprise and spun around, ready to confront her unknown visitor. Hovering before her was a tiny Fae. She carried an equally tiny lantern on her tail and wore a bright grin. "You're lost, aren't you?" the Fae asked with sympathy in her voice, which brought tears to Deserrae's eyes. Fearing she'd start crying, Desi just nodded her answer.

Squishy the Fae felt sorry for the Snapper and assured her, "You aren't lost anymore. I'll get you to the clan!" Deserrae followed her new friend through the woods and just before dawn Squishy led her into a clearing where a black Tundra greeted her. A silver poodle sat at the Tundra's feet and they listened intently as Squishy told them of where and how she found the young Snapper. Every few minutes, as Squishy was talking, the poodle would sniff the air. When Deserrae's tale was told, the poodle spoke up.

"You's in da right place," she stated as she looked Deserrae in the eye. "Follow me," the bossy little dog commanded. Too tired to protest, Desi was led past a group of Snappers. Then they walked past the edge of the swamp were some Bogsneaks were greeting the day. Finally, they came to a cool clearing where hatchlings and adults were starting their day. Havoc the poodle walked over to a Guardian who had a gently glowing tail and hopped on his back. "Hey, BeeBee," she yipped to the purple Guardian, "someone's here to see yous."

Relieved, Deserrae greeted the dragon she had worked so hard to find. "Hello, grandfather!"

Desi spends her days caring for the rowdy hatchlings of the nameless breeding clan, and no longer trains for hours to fight. Just remember, though, if you should get the idea to mess with her charges: because she chooses not to fight does not mean she isn't still a warrior.
