Mantel
The Lich

earthmidsmall.png

The last thing Mantel remembered, he'd been lying in his lair, shaking as he succumbed to sepsis. Life in his old Clan had been harsh, and Mantel didn't fear death. None of them did. For him, though, the thought of death came as a kind of relief. Mantel knew in his soul, from the moment of his birth, that he was meant to be stillborn. Someone, or something, had made a deal on his behalf: he would cheat death and live, but the fate of his brothers would be tied to his.

If one got sick, they would all get sick. If one died in battle, the others would have to fight the same challenge. Bruises on one tended to show on the others. Mantel thought in his last moments, half out of his mind with fever, that dying from tainted food was a mercy to all of them in a lot of ways. Something told him that the curse inflicted on all three of them would die with him. When his time came, Mantel went quietly, with a contented sigh. He knew his brothers would be safe. Or at least, safer. And in pandemic times, that was enough.

The next thing Mantel knew, he was awake, on a great stone slab that seemed to be carved with weird symbols. He gasped his first breath in who-knew-how-long, blinking his many eyes in the gloom of an underground lair. Mantel's senses came back to him slowly. He found he had a small belt holding his mouth shut, for some strange reason. Was this Hell? Was he in Hell? Mantel couldn't think of any reason he'd have been sent to Hell. He hadn't asked to cheat death. He hadn't made any deals with any evil entities himself. He slowly started to stir-- something was terribly wrong inside, but that tracked with being in Hell.

"Don't get up," came a deep, feminine voice from across the room. "Your soul was out for a good long while. You need time to adjust." Mantel heard the heavy sound of footfalls, and then a bogsneak entered his rather wide field of view. She gently undid the belt, then pressed a teacup to his lips, gently easing it down his throat. Whatever liquid she poured down him seemed to purge the wrongness from his body, warming him from within.

He quietly thanked her, and let her ease him into a seated position. "Then... I'm not in Hell?"

"Hell? Oh, Hell isn't real. I thought your soul had already gone to the Gods, truth be told." The bogsneak gave him a toothy grin and tossed the belt into a basket of many such belts near the slab. "I usually only get zombies out when someone's been dead as long as you have. You're a very lucky dragon."

Mantel's heart fluttered in his chest. "...wait. I died. I died. I was dead."

"And now you're undead," the bogsneak replied cheerfully. "And, I must say, you're in remarkably good shape. It's really quite difficult to successfully make a lich, even under the most ideal conditions."

"...what?! I'm some kinda zombie?!" Mantel scrambled to his feet. "No! No! I'm supposed to be dead! My brothers... if I die, the curse is broken! I wasn't supposed to live at all!"

"No, you're a lich. Which means you're sapient, and can command other undead. It also means you need to eat corpses to survive, so... good luck with that." She stretched. "As far as the binding curse goes... well, your brothers are alive, aren't they? That explains why your soul was so close to the mortal plane." She shrugged. "I tried to bind your will as well, but you're a stubborn one. The positive in all this is that you're the reason I can achieve the rank of Grandmaster in the Necromancers' Guild."

"How is that a positive?!"

"Oh, not for you... but I'm sure you can make the best of it. Good luck, and try not to die again. Probably wouldn't be good for your brothers if you did."

Mantel still feels immensely guilty for cheating death twice and inflicting a curse on his siblings without meaning to, but in his adult life he has become jaded as a result. One can only treat one's life, or unlife, as penance for so long before becoming numb. Slowly, as the realities of his condition have set in, Mantel has stopped caring so much for those around him. He started his cutthroat criminal enterprise because forever is a very very long time to spend miserable-- he sure as hell isn't going to spend it in poverty too.

He's lonely, in a way, although he'd never admit it even to himself. Privately, Mantel believes that he ruins anyone and anything he gets close to-- a belief that isn't entirely unfounded. He doesn't see the point of inflicting his undead self on anyone else; any friends he gets will eventually sicken and die, and to his mind are just vessels for grief that hasn't happened yet. He can't rule out his undead nature or other aspects of his cursed being spreading onto anyone who gets too close.

Maybe someday Mantel will feel safe enough to be vulnerable, but for now, he's jaded enough not to mind being lonely. At least on the surface.

These days, after everyone living in the original Zombocorp besides Fireclaw starved to death, Mantel has decided he's gonna build his horrible corporate empire better. Because why not? Fireclaw was smart enough not to die so she gets to be an honorary sibling. Sure. Why not. Who cares. Life is terrible and unlife is worse.

Day 57 - 60
Cause of death: food poisoning

Mantel was cursed at birth: his fate is tied to that of his brothers. He sees everything, including the truth... He knows it's all his fault... He was never supposed to live... He feels extremely guilty towards his brothers.

Terran and Selenay just got back from the Earth realm with their baby boys! And I have to admit... I cheated a little bit on the cointoss. One of them was born with multi-gaze, and it was also the only one that failed his cointoss... So I decided to let him live, but now he and his brothers are all cursed. Meaning their fates are now tied together: if one of them gets sick they all get sick. If one of them dies in the coliseum, the others will have to perform the same battlestreak as their deceased brother.
