Liast

______________
Liast has been into books since he was a hatchling gnawing on Syrinic Wavetail’s Leylines in Motion: The Effects of Arcanoseismic Kinetics on the Metaphysical Structures of Reality (much to his mother’s horror). Although he hasn’t nommed on a book in a long time, his appetite for reading is voracious and also omnivorous—he literally doesn’t care what he reads as long as words are going into his brain. As a result, he’s familiar with all the books that the pack possesses and so has become the librarian more or less by default.

Despite his affinity for reading, he’s never actually read an entire book straight through from cover to cover. Instead, he dips in here and there, flipping back to previous chapters or following references to other books in order to clarify anything that doesn’t make sense. (With fiction, he reads until he’s really getting into it, then jumps to the ending before going back and reading the middle.)

His system of organization—if it can be called that—is as erratic as his reading style. It’s not entirely his fault, as materials tend to migrate to wherever someone is working, but his lack of attention to alphabetization—or indeed any sort of logical order—certainly doesn’t help. If someone needs a book, he digs through the haphazardly shelved and stacked tomes, identifying works by proximity, appearance, smell, and (occasionally) taste as much as by author or title. Between that and his patchwork, semi-random reading, it seems a wonder that anything ever gets found. And yet, by some combination of memory and intuition, he’s unerringly able to locate whatever a researcher needs, even if they’re not exactly sure what that is.

Aside from books, Liast’s main interests are keeping fit and making time with the ladies (or trying to, anyway). He’s the only dragon in the pack who works out purely for the sake of it, instead of getting exercise in the course of doing a job, and he’s preeningly proud of his muscles. He’s very into competitive games and has never met a kind of sportsball he didn’t like. When it comes to female dragons, he’s all about smooth terrible come-ons and brilliant also terrible pickup lines. Rejection barely fazes him unless it’s especially harsh, in which case he briefly pouts in disappointment before forgetting all about it and cheerfully resuming his usual efforts. He never gets angry or offended, and he’s pretty good about respecting physical boundaries, so he’s generally regarded as annoying at worst. Most of the female dragons just roll their eyes at him; a few think he’s hilarious and respond by teasing and flirting back, which delights him. He’s actually become less of an outright horndog since Helia dragged him onto the nest, and so his approaches have become more of a mutual game and less of a panting need for attention.

Aside from trash-talking when playing sports and enthusiastic outbursts relating to his reading (including yelling about awful plot twists), Liast is really a pretty chill dude. He’s just out here living his best bro life with his buds, his books, and a bevy of beautiful ladies who mostly are smarter than he is. What’s not to like?
