Incident Report

Report Regarding: the Guardian "Auryon"

Quote follows from the recommendation that secured Auryon the position of Guardian:

"He's undeniably skilled. You should see him spar; he's like a dragon possessed, like losing would kill him, like he can see his opponents weaknesses written across your face. And with fighters like that, you need to be careful; if they can't come out of the blood-haze and make effective decisions, there is no point in giving them the responsibility of a Guardian, but I assure you: Auryon has what it takes. If anyone does, it's him.

"The only problem I can foresee is his rebellious streak; there have been times where he's twisted orders in order to do what he actually wants to do, but as far as I see it, promoting him solves that problem. Put him in a place where there are fewer orders to disobey, and we'll see much less disobedience from him. I doubt the Plaguebringer will ever see fit to make him a Warden, but he would be a fine Guardian."

Since his promotion, Auryon has become much more effective at his job. It appears that, when he finally stops fighting every other order he is issued, his skill at combat and tracking shines through. It is interesting to note that even when he is off duty, Auryon spends much of his time hunting fugitive Ichors and helping the Carnage-Ichor cause. At this time, I do not recommend attempting to demote him; Auryon and the order are both much happier and more effective than they were before his promotion, and he has proven himself.

With that said, he will remain under review. His attitude and behavior demand vigilance; if he were to go turncoat, he would be a remarkable obstacle, and that potential outcome can't be discounted at this time.

About
plaguemidsmall.png

Auryon is an imposing, intimidating dragon with a mean streak. He has a taste for battle a particular bloodlust; he enjoys the Hunt, the Fight, and the Spilling of Blood. Among his fellows, he is known for being surprisingly jovial and friendly, especially to those he has fought; among those who end up on the wrong end of his teeth and claws, he is known for being cold, savage, and ruthless. He is more loyal to what the Carnage-Ichor order does for him than he is to the order itself; his position gives him access to all the blood he could ask for, and all he has to do to earn it is guard the Scarred Wasteland. In his mind, it's a very good deal.

Auryon is inherently selfish; his highest concern is always his own self. He does his job because it gets him status; he hunts because he enjoys it. His actions all ultimately share one thing in common: he enjoys them. It works very well for him, and he is unlikely to change easily.

Loyalties
plaguemidsmall.png

Intimidating, aggressive, and ruthless, Auryon is a Guardian of the Carnage-Ichor order: tasked with defending the Wyrmwound and the Plaguebringer herself from outside threats, he patrols the area around the Rotrock Rim, hunting those deemed dangerous to the order. He is a fearsome sight; with a pelt like blood and massive, twisting horns, Auryon strikes a very imposing figure. He is a successful C-I, and has proven himself enough times to secure his rank. Even so, among his fellow Guardians, he isn't held in the highest regard; while the order trained fear and empathy out of him, he always held on to a rebellious streak, and it shines through at inconvenient moments.

When off-duty, Auryon takes it upon himself to hunt. He has a taste for blood and very little regard for the sanctity of life, and his claws are sharp. His favorite prey is, of course, the failed Ichor of the Plaguebringer's first experiments. He has received acclaim from his fellow C-Is for his habit of pursuing these dragons even when his duties don't demand it.

He has a particular fondness for objects which resemble or share a namesake with blood. He found himself surprisingly fond of the Gryphon's Blood Sempervivum; it is difficult to cultivate, but he enjoys its color. Anyone who accuses him of going soft because he cares for a plant is liable to be gravely injured. His collection is closely guarded; if he finds a grain of sand out of place, Auryon will hunt down whoever did it and make them regret it.

Agaricus

Prey | Unaffiliated

Agaricus is the only Ichor that Auryon has hunted and failed to kill. He is frustratingly elusive; every time Auryon feels as though he's close enough to sink his claws in, Agaricus seems to vanish. On more than one occasion, Auryon has found himself surrounded by fungal spores, and he wakes up later with no memory of the time that passed. Auryon refuses to tell his fellows about his failures; instead, he is committed to hunting this Ichor until he can make Agaricus regret ever challenging him. He has all the time in the world.

Auryon is the Carnage-Ichor that Agaricus has become most familiar with; this is the hunter who has been most dogged about catching him, and Agaricus sees him far too often for his own comfort. There are advantages to often running across the same dragon, though: Agaricus is starting to learn Auryon's weaknesses, and hopes someday to be able to escape for good.

Capture

Auryon's claws sink into soft chest fur, just shy of drawing blood as he pins his target to the stone. He bares his teeth, snarling, at the Ichor before him -- an Ichor who stares back impassively, apparently neither scared nor worried now that he has finally been caught.

Auryon could kill him. He has his claws at his throat. It would be so easy, but he hesitates. There's just one thing he has to know, first.

"How," Auryon spits, "do you keep escaping?"

His target lets out a slow breath, but makes no attempt to move. Auryon tries to curb his impatience. It has been months, now, of getting closer and closer and always being eluded. Now that he has a closer look at this dragon -- the fungus woven into his fur, mushrooms growing in shelves, a mycelium mane -- Auryon doesn't understand. He barely put up a fight; he ran quickly, but not quickly enough to escape. The only significant thing about this dragon is the mushrooms, and Auryon doesn't know how a simple fungus should make a difference.

His target is silent; it only adds to Auryon's building fury. He digs his claws in, shaking the Ichor's limp body. "Answer me," he hisses. "How do you do it? What is this fungus for?"

With a sigh, the Ichor speaks. "These are mushrooms I cultivated myself," he says, clearly reluctant to talk. "They have calming properties, and I use them when my own rage becomes too much to bear."

"That isn't an answer," Auryon snarls. The Ichor meets his eyes; there is no deception in his face, and no fear.

"Consider," the Ichor says, "that a medicine which calms me would have the same effect on you."

A memory comes, unbidden, of crashing through the undergrowth after this same Ichor's retreating form -- and then of waking up, hours later, with no memory of when he'd fallen asleep and no memory of where his target had been. There had been spores in the air, hadn't there? And he had been breathing them in.

Auryon is not stupid; it's what gained him his position, and also what nearly caused him to lose it. His mind moves quickly, once the blood-haze wears off and he has time to think, and now, when he narrows his eyes and stares at his quarry, he realizes what he should have figured out a long time ago.

"You used your mushrooms on me," he says, and then laughs. And laughs, and laughs. "Oh, that's good. That's interesting." He shakes his head, cursing his own stupidity. "It's such a shame they won't save you now that I've got you trapped. It was fun, in a way, to chase you down like this." His claws tighten and he feels flesh beneath them, but his Ichor target only sighs. He only seems resigned.

This is much less fun, Auryon thinks, when they aren't afraid of me.

"Listen," the Ichor says, quietly, and for a reason Auryon can't put into words, he pauses before his killing blow, "under other circumstances, I would be willing to concede defeat. You did catch me." He meets Auryon's eyes, and what had been an impassive stare before becomes a glare, with resolve Auryon doesn't understand. "But I can't die today, and especially not at your claws."

Too late, Auryon notices the spores in the air, thicker than they had been just minutes before. He sucks in a surprised breath -- a mistake, he realizes, when he begins to choke on the poisoned air. It happens more quickly than he had remembered: his vision starts to blur, and his limbs feel heavy, and when his target pushes him away Auryon has little strength to fight back with.

"You--" he snarls as he sways on his feet, making a final attempt to lunge for the Ichor's throat, but he can't even summon up the strength to take more than a stumbling step. "I will get you."

"I'm sure you'll try." The Ichor doesn't look particularly worried -- but Auryon wouldn't be worried, either, in his position. He hates to admit it, but if he can't move, he has lost. "It's a shame you didn't catch me a year ago. I might have let you win." He shrugs, and starts to turn away. "I'll see you around, I suppose. Better luck next time."

--

Auryon wakes up hours later, with Sornieth's twin moons rising overhead, and he curses and rages all the way home.
