Taiga
He/Him
PROJECT:#010

Average Sized Heavy Weight Gaoler
Dark Horse | Blacksmith | Cook & Hunter

Born to a mixed-breed clan, Taiga is considered a child in the eyes of his breed, having never joined one of the Five Orders. And a child he will stay, too, as he has no intention of dedicating his life to all things concerning the Shade--or worse, wasting his life away in a jail. He can't imagine anything more depressing than that. He'd much prefer to spend his lifetime doing things he loves, with the people he loves.

In addition being the resident blacksmith, Taiga's also the Clan's official Cook and is responsible for prepping and processing food for large feasts and seasonal preservation. He's become quite adept at hunting (and less-so at gathering) out of necessity, in order to satisfy not only his abnormally large appetite but also the needs of an increasingly larger Clan. Fortunately for him, Taiga's advanced sense of smell means he has an easier time tracking prey than others in the clan might.

Like other Gaolers, Taiga keeps his den meticulously clean, and this fastidiousness is also extended to the forge and the kitchen, something his forge-partners and occasional aides always seem to be amazed at. Sure, it's messy work, but if you clean as you go then the work is basically done by the time you finish. It's not hard, really. He doesn't understand what the others have so much difficulty with.

Taiga isn't the best fighter there ever was, and he doesn't want to be either. He just likes the challenge of the fight, the adrenaline, and the urgency. But just because Taiga's not aiming for best in the world doesn't mean he's just going to turn down an opportunity to learn from the great Lady Knight herself. Getting to show off a little of his bladesmithing handiwork in exchange is just a bonus, really. Of course, Mai gets just as much if not more opportunity to show off during their training sessions. Her smaller size and ability to fly mean her speed and agility outstrip his own by far. Taiga doesn't just let her knock him around though, make no mistake. While his wings may not work, his legs certainly do, and he has the element of surprise on his side. No one expects a Gaoler to be able to jump very high--certainly not over half his own length into the air. Even after losing the shock factor of ambush, there's no downplaying the amount of strength needed to jump that high, nor how effectively it expands his range of attack.

Taiga harbours a great dislike for all things canine. He doesn't like Hainu, or Hounds, or Wolves, or Hyenas, or even Grinfins. Because of this, he and Hakke do not get along.

The Rusty Golem was Taiga's first project as a fully-fledged journeyman blacksmith. With the help of his one of his forge-partners, Kishima, and the clan's enchantress, Zahara, Axe the Golem was brought to life in a whirl of iron and fire. Axe is rusty and clanky and loud, and accidentally sets things on fire all the time, but Taiga wouldn't trade her for anything else in the world.

Since becoming a Venerable Clan Taiga has had to work harder and longer to keep the Clan healthy and well-fed. He's had to rely more and more on what Diarmaid's been catching as the sheer amount of processing required to prepare and preserve the food keeps increasing, with little time to spare for his own hunting and gathering. Insects and plants have become somewhat of a delicacy these days as the specimens cultivated by Miuji and Silk are strictly not-for-eating, while Ghaara's plants are almost entirely medicinal, with few exceptions. While Taiga would never admit to struggling, he could really benefit from a little help keeping everyone fed.

He gets help in the armoury instead, which is... fine. Not what he asked for, but fine, Hearth is a friend of Kishima's and he knows his way around the forge well enough not to mess anything up--which is good because Taiga barely has enough time to sneak in bi-weekly training sessions with Mai in between all the food prep he has to do nowadays, so there's no way he'd have enough time to train an apprentice from the ground up as well. Knowing Hearth is there and capable enough to pick up his slack if anyone needs blacksmithing is a huge relief. Even more relieving is Hearth's ability to summon and put out fires at will (or something of the sort) which Taiga will never under any circumstances admit how jealous of that he is, even if it's totally obvious.

And he does eventually get help in the kitchen... sort of. Kakugo is surprisingly adept despite her lack of foreclaws, but this shouldn't surprise him given what he knows of Kishima's determination. He'd also never say that to her face, given her temper--it's just not worth the screaming (and boy does she ever scream, about everything). Kakugo only ever helps out when she feels like it, though, so she's not super reliable. She'll always help out in a pinch, but only if he begs, and she gets such an attitude about it that it's almost not even worthwhile in the end.

The Porphyry Flamecaller was a gift from Taiga's forge-partners and the enchantress. Like the rest of his familiars, the statue is a living entity of fire, and can often be found sleeping in the forge-fire along with some of Hearth's familiars. While they sometimes (often) get in the way of his work, Taiga likes to think that his familiars are just trying to help him, albeit unsuccessfully.
