Fugitive File

Report Regarding: Malice Ichor "Valerian"

[Note attached to the top of the file:

This is a copy of my predecessor's record of Valerian. After examining every file we have on this dragon, I have concluded that nothing here needs to change. It may also be important to note: Valerian was ultimately responsible for Tactician Javi's death on the same day Warden Snakeroot was murdered. He may have a vendetta against other Tacticians; I am prepared to accept that I am now a target as well.

Tactician Enheduanna]

Name: Valerian
Gender: Male
Rank: Malice Ichor — Polymath
Status: At Large

Physical Description
Obsidian coat, stained red at the ends of his limbs. Deep, dark red mane. Muscular with rare eyes. He has rarely been sighted.

Report
The Malice Ichor Valerian is an unfortunate cautionary tale, proving that it is nearly impossible to know which dragons will be tempted away from the Order. By all accounts, Valerian—formerly a C-I Tactician—was a staunchly loyal dragon, known for always speaking his mind. The fact that he vanished one day, only to reappear as a new Malice Ichor, defied expectation.

Valerian has rarely been spotted in the time since his defection. He is elusive and highly intelligent, and while sightings confirm that he remains in the Scarred Wasteland, he is sighted infrequently enough to tell us that he stays well hidden. On the rare occasions he is seen, it is rarely alone: he appears to be connected to at least two other Malice Ichors, those known as “Hemlock” and “Asphodel”.

We have no current reports on the magic Valerian employs. Despite this, it is safe to assume that he is a dangerous priority target: his association with powerful sorcerers such as Hemlock implies that his magic will manifest in similar ways. Excepting the risk of magic, Valerian was a high-ranking Tactician during his time as a C-I—one of the best. It is impossible to guess how much inside knowledge he is passing on to his new Malice Ichor allies.

Advised Action
All patrols are to keep their eyes peeled for a dragon matching his description. If spotted, Valerian is a priority target: kill on sight. We cannot guess how much knowledge he has shared, but we also cannot allow more to get out.

Sentry patrols have come across multiple bases which may have been hideouts employed by Valerian and his allies. Thus far, all have been empty, but it is safe to assume that he has more “safehouses” in which to shelter. If one is found, the location must be recorded and marked. It is likely that Valerian and his allies will continue to evade us until every shelter they have has been razed to the ground.

About
plaguemidsmall.png

Valerian is well known as a skilled tactician with a sharp mind and a calm, measured personality. As a Carnage-Ichor Tactician, he was unique from his fellows in that violence was rarely his chosen path. As Valerian saw it, he never needed to turn to violence himself; he was surrounded by plenty of dragons with short tempers and something to prove, and in observing their fights he could learn their strengths and weaknesses. Even when he became a Malice-Ichor, his personality did not change. He is still a sharp mind and a steady hand.

This is not to say that he lacks a temper; his rage builds slowly, but it does build. Those who test him will find themselves on the wrong end of some very sharp claws -- and a mind that knows exactly where to put them to cause as much pain as possible. Even Hemlock knows better than to doubt his capacity for violence, even without the C-I invulnerability.

Valerian is exceedingly difficult to find because he rarely leaves his lair. He has few of the abilities that make Malice-Ichors so dangerous. He has chosen to prioritize his mind over his magic, and he relies on his partner, Hemlock, and his young student, Asphodel, to protect him. The strongest ability he has is the magic that shrouds him from Carnage-Ichors, as he knows perfectly well that he is hunted.

Malice-Ichor Polymath

Malice-Ichors are chaotic dragons who bring discord everywhere they go; they feed off of negativity, and thus cause it wherever and whenever they can. They are known for being liars, and depicted in stories and art as liars, whispering into their victims' ears.

Valerian was once a Carnage-Ichor Tactician, the brains behind the larger C-I operation. He was staunchly loyal and, as far as anyone else was concerned, unmovable, until he met Hemlock and defected. When he turned to Malice, Valerian did little to embrace his new powers; he uses them for self-defence, but typically focuses his efforts on keeping Hemlock safe rather than creating chaos himself. He feeds off the dregs of Hemlock's chaos, satisfied with his part in it.

Loyalties
plaguemidsmall.png

Valerian once belonged to the order of Carnage-Ichors: defenders of the Wyrmwound and the Plaguebringer. He was raised and trained as a Tactician, where he could put his sharp mind and his knowledge of other dragons to effective use. He spent many years satisfied with this life, finding fulfillment in directing his fellows in matters of strategy, and while he had few close friends, those who knew him trusted him implicitly.

Then, he met Hemlock: a former C-I with a special talent for manipulation. By that time, Hemlock had already made a name for himself as a dangerous, chaotic dragon -- a high-priority target that Valerian himself had worked on strategies to counter. Valerian was the last C-I that anybody would have expected to defect, but it only took three meetings with Hemlock to draw Valerian away from the Order. Even Valerian doesn't entirely understand why; he had been dissatisfied with the Order for a long time, though he hadn't seen it until Hemlock's clever manipulations entered the picture. He told Valerian exactly what he needed to hear.

Once he had changed, Valerian knew immediately that there was no going back. He did not allow himself regret; his new role was not so different from his old one, and he harbored some loyalty for Hemlock, who put him in this position in the first place. Now, the two of them work as a unit; Valerian is the brains, and Hemlock is the one who puts his plans into action. Valerian loves Hemlock very deeply, though he prefers to express it through actions over words. Hemlock is the same; Valerian understands him better than any dragon in the world, and he doesn't need to hear small words to know the depth of their shared feelings.

Magic
plaguemidsmall.png

Illusion
plaguemidsmall.png
plagueshieldl.png
Weak illusion magic taught to Valerian by Hemlock. Valerian uses it sparingly, only to hide or disguise himself; magic has never been his mastery, and though he has more proficiency for it as a Malice-Ichor, he still chooses to prioritize his mind over his magic. He trusts Hemlock to protect him, in an emergency, but he can do it if he must.
plaguemidsmall.png
Eye Magic
plaguemidsmall.png
Valerian's Rare eyes give him unique abilities: he can influence his target's nervous system, impacting their movement or eyesight. Most often, Valerian uses this to defend himself: a C-I that can't see has that much less to find him by, which is all Valerian needs to escape. He has become a master of clever hiding, even without magic.

Hemlock || [ relationship playlist ]

Partner | He/xe

Hemlock is the one responsible for Valerian's defection, and there should probably have been more animosity in his mind for that, but Valerian does not regret anything he has ever done regarding Hemlock. Hemlock gave him freedom from the rigidity of the Order, and continues to give him protection and understanding. The two of them are an impressive team, and Valerian is certain that Hemlock would have died already without his strategies. They work together and they protect each other. Valerian is very deeply in love, though he rarely says it aloud.

Asphodel

Student | He/him

Asphodel is the young Malice-Ichor that Valerian and Hemlock took in. Valerian has tried to teach Asphodel all that he knows -- the next generation should, after all, be better than the last. It is abundantly clear that most of Asphodel's talents lie in manipulation and illusion, but from Valierian he has at least picked up on how to properly read other dragons, and how to use their weaknesses against them. Asphodel calls Valerian "father," and Valerian doesn't mind it; he is fond of Asphodel not unlike a father is of a son.

Fachnan

Contact | He/him

Hemlock is adamant that he and Valerian remain unattached to Shiva's network, but Valerian does occasionally have contact with Fachnan, their patriarch. Valerian can't deny that it is good to have an outside source of information -- or even just an understanding face to share his minor struggles with. Few in the world know what it is like to have a partner as strong-willed as Hemlock is, but Fachnan is one of those few. Sometimes, when it's safe, the two of them get together over drinks.

Enheduanna

Adversary | He/him

Valerian does not know Enheduanna so much as he knows of him. He keeps track of the personnel changes in his area, when he can, and the appointment of a new Tactician after the demise of the previous one caught his interest. From what he can tell, Enheduanna is talented but young; he has a lot of potential, and when he was with the C-Is Valerian would have loved to mentor him. Now, he sees Enheduanna as something of a rival: they are working against one another, and only one can win.

Nightshade

Daughter | She/her

Valerian puts forth a token effort to teach what he can to all his biological children, though they rarely stick around for very long. Nightshade seemed like she might be a challenge at first, but Valerian found himself impressed by her sharp mind and her willingness to learn. She is a sharp young dragon, and Valerian was fond of her even before Asphodel insisted she stay. Adjusting their family to include one more has been a challenge, but Valerian likes to have young Nightshade around.

Incident Report

Report Regarding: Defection

[Part of this report is missing or obscured.]

...Many of the testimonies I have gathered share the same overall confusion. Valerian is widely reported to have been one of the most staunchly loyal Tacticians we have ever had. He was said to be measured and remarkably calm for a Carnage-Ichor, a dragon who preferred to hear all sides of an issue before making a decision. This is not to say that he lacked violence -- his temper was a sight to behold, but it rarely showed itself. Valerian is supposed to have been a dragon who always spoke exactly what was on his mind, so to imagine that he would abandon the order without ever telling someone about it is, to be perfectly frank, absurd.

But despite that absurdity, that is exactly what happened. Valerian vanished not a week ago, leaving no notice and telling nobody where he was going. We were ready to chalk it up to an unfortunate disappearance, as happens on occasion -- the Scarred Wasteland is dangerous even to the most skilled warriors, after all -- but several patrols have reported seeing and recognizing Valerian. He has visibly changed, however; most notably, his pelt has been stained a deep obsidian.

With multiple corroborations, the only conclusion left to draw is that Valerian left his post as a Carnage-Ichor Tactician and turned to Malice. As surprised as those who knew him may be, the fact remains that it is our duty to make this right. Valerian could not have been changed more than a week ago, and he has had little time to learn the magic that makes Mal-Ichors so dangerous. I suggest that we hunt him down now, before he grows in strength or finds himself allies. As a Tactician, he was privy to information that could be very dangerous in the hands of the enemy.
