H I S T O R Y I remember Mạc Khuê naming Vãn Yến one of the best students in her class. I was there to witness her excellence - how she never backed down from a debate, how every essay she wrote was as watertight as a well built dam, how fluently she was at keeping up with centuries worth of philosophical wisdom. Yet unlike Lục Ngạn who buried all such wisdom inside his bottomless cranium, Vãn Yến soon applied all of it to reality. I met her at the Nursery as a young dragon. Just like so many of us, her family - a wealthy clan from Starwood Strands - abandoned her in favour of their own image. Perhaps this was what cemented in her mind that politics was a ruthless game, and one she would fling herself into without a second thought. Vãn Yến had always made it clear that climbing the social ladder was what the Society needed, and isolating oneself from the world under the guise of “wanderer” was never a wise thing to do. I am inclined to agree. We have enough outlaws and wanderers - what we need, more than ever, is someone who can put our names in the eyes of those who actually matter. I may have overstepped and made this biography about me too much, but this is all because what Vãn Yến holds dear, and what is close to my own heart are very alike. Dare I say I have never met someone I can confidently call my soulmate such as she. Occupying a decent [institute] in Northeast Tourmaline, her job includes looking after the infrastructure of Divinity and, unspokenly, ensuring that we Diviners behave ourselves in the eyes of the Kingdom’s governors. Dare I say she embodies the main objective of Celestian Hall the most. She understands more than anyone else that we need structure to survive. She gives me an insight into the macrocosm of what could be Huyền Nghi’s own trajectory. I remember Vãn Yến asking me at one point, whether we could build our own kingdom. Separate from Tourmaline. I assume that this was because she saw how out-of-touch, out-of-reality many of our members are. It was just an idea thrown into the void. I still pay it no mind, as I know she is now already too deep into Tourmaline’s mechanisms to pull out. Vãn Yến told me to be wary around Houfell Academy and Shroudsea Palace. I think she has a point. |
