Dental Hygienist

Uh-oh, looks like this eager dentist wandered a little too far from their home lair (452562, Hyzenthlaay), and now they’re off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, they'd really appreciate it if you could instead just return them home via the Crossroads, or send them off in the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread. If you don't want another traveler in return, you can also drop them off at the Traveling Dragon Rest Hub. If you don't want them leaving your lair, you can also adopt them permanently - just contact Hyzenthlaay and let her know (it’s good for her notes)!

Many people have worked very hard on this traveling dragon, and exalting them would be an absolute shame. Please don’t do it!
”Show me those pearly whites!”

Mehrgarh, who frequently just goes by "Meg", has a serious interest in teeth and teeth alone. Her parents wanted to push her towards the finer art of circus clowning, but no - Meg had her eyes on dentistry. Leaving her family in shame for her failure to live up to their ideals, Meg traded in her red clown nose for scalpels and water picks, determined to travel Sornieth with one simple goal: leaving dragons' teeth cleaner than they've ever been.

She has a particularly soft spot for hatchlings, which is a shame considering how many of them are terrified of her.

@Hyzenthlaay: I didn't even bother saying goodbye to my parents before leaving this morning, my precious dental tools in tow. I know they wouldn't approve of my life choices, but dentistry is my calling, not the rodeo!

@aura12: Upon my arrival in Irma's Clan, I was sent to see the healer, Luna. Though a healer, she had little knowledge of dentistry. During my stay, I taught her the basics, and she taught me about herbs that are useful for dulling pain when a tooth needs to be pulled.

Before I answered the call of the open road, Luna gave me her corsage to remember her by. I will miss her dearly.

@sgkat: While the residents of the Sunbeam Lanternhouse were happy to make me comfortable, they were less enthusiastic about dental hygiene, alas. And I found this particularly distressing because their chef, Haruna, created her elaborate dishes with no regard for minimizing cavities! I tried to explain the importance of good dental hygiene to her, but she wouldn't be convinced.

I had just about given up hope when I hit upon another solution - with the help of Takumi, the clan's confectioner, I had the idea to create a tooth-cleaning candy!

It took us a while to perfect our recipe - a few of the early prototypes stuck to your teeth something awful, and some of the later ones tasted super-bitter. Now, while we were laboring over making the perfect tooth-cleaning candy, UltramarineII would occasionally stop by the kitchen. He thought I was working too hard, but I saw through his charm: he just wanted hatchlings. I didn't want to mother more Clownpants, and I told him so. But that didn't stop him from coming by. Eventually I got so used to his presence in the kitchen that I ignored him, so it came as a shock when he witnessed my frustration at yet another failure: our batch of syrup had burned and then exploded.

Takumi helped me clean it up, but I was beginning to despair. In a temper, I gave UltramarineII what he wanted. We had two hatchlings, and I was secretly relieved that neither were Clownpants.

Anyway, after the fiasco of the exploding syrup, the puzzle of getting the tooth-cleaning candy to taste right and still do its job piqued Haruna's interest. I'm still not entirely sure she's a disciple of dental hygiene, but she was willing to contribute her cooking chemistry expertise to our conundrum - mostly because she wanted mint-flavored candies, I think, but I can't object because it did the trick.

@KeepOnRunning: Though I specialize in dental hygiene, I figured my next trip should be somewhere I'm desperately needed - the Scarred Wasteland. With all the carrion, one would assume that dental hygiene practically non-existent in the Plaguebringer's realm. I was correct in this assumption, however if I'd known what would occur next I'd never have come.

To put it bluntly, I'm stuck. I followed a dark figure into the Wandering Contagion near the border of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Mist started coming in within minutes of my wandering, and it felt as though the forest was endless. Some of my only comforts were the tooth-cleaning candies I still had on me from my last stop and the larkspur corsage from Luna. It took entirely too long for yet another mysterious figure to appear and guide me to the other end of the contagion, this one a skydancer introducing herself as Celeste.

From there, she introduced me to the group she was a part of, dragons much like myself who'd gotten lost and trapped in this little cliffside area and it's abiding misty woods. They called themselves wanderers of this place - Blight's Bane, they said it was called. I'd never encountered that name before, so I was a bit confused as to where exactly we were and why everyone was saying I couldn't leave. Then they showed me the bodies.

Dead bodies, barely visible from the clifftop, impaled on sharp stones jutting from the sea, partially obscured by more mist. Even more bodies tangled in rot and root alike, all victims who dared to escape. Needless to say, that shut me up. With the knowledge that I was stuck - at least for the time being - I decided to pour more effort into my hygiene and offered to clean the teeth of the other wanderers. I didn't have to worry about the hatchlings fearing me here, as they'd seen far worse, though they didn't seem very familiar with tundras. That at least lightened my spirits.

However, during my stay, I grew close to an imperial named Orwell, a fellow traveler-to-be. He wasn't satisfied with sitting around and accepting that we were stuck. I could see in him the same itch I'd had when I first set out. That intense drive would get results, I knew. Before long, we were trying to make sense of these ancient runes he'd stumbled on. They translated out roughly to;

Folding and unfurling
These endless nights

To find the end
Need no want

With dark eyes
Let light encompass

It took us absolute ages to figure out, during which time Orwell gifted me a lei his mother once wore. But finally, we were able to figure it out. We both cleared our minds, confident in our interpretation, and stepped into the woods with no thoughts. We walked and walked and walked, and at some point his footsteps faded away, leaving me to wander on my own. But still I kept going. With eyes closed and a mind only replaying all the moments I'd lived out, I miraculously found myself at the other side of the Wandering Contagion. I didn't see Orwell. To this day, I have no idea if he's still alive out there, trapped in Blight's Bane or travelling as he always dreamed. I do know one thing, though; if we find each other, we'll definitely travel together.

I was still in the Scarred Wasteland - though I quickly found that it was also very close to the Tangled Wood.

Maybe I didn't get as much as an opportunity, especially since the clan already had a doctor, but at least I found a fellow travelling dragon to fall in love with - Flare. I offered him an examination, he offered me some rocks. Found it to be a cool trade, but we decided to go our separate ways after we had hatchlings.

I did it. I finally found Orwell. We met up in Cragenmire City after I'd heard some irritable skydancer talking about him on my way to Dragonhome. He was older, and had evidently had hatchlings of his own, like me. It was so nice getting to talk about... normal things. No fearing for our lives or high-stakes gambles. Just chatting.

He invited me to stay with him a while with the imperial he'd fallen for, Adrastea. She was beautiful, that much was certain, but her smile needed some work. It seemed I wasn't the only dental hygienist coming through though; a spiral with the very same practice had left just a day or two prior. While some of the travelers I encountered had an aversion to me because of my passion, I found that the hatchlings quite enjoyed my presence. They'd evidently encountered worse, much like the young dragons of Blight's Bane.

After a few days, Orwell invited me to stay with him long-term. He wasn't sure if he'd settle down in Cragenmire City, but he planned on staying put for a good, long while beforehand. I wasn't too sure. I was itching to go again, but after nearly losing Orwell and Luna's gifts, I was a bit shaken. I decided to compromise; I'd stay until we both had hatchlings next, and I'd be staying in the Lake District. The Dark District, where Orwell was living, was just too unhygienic for my practices. He seemed pleased by this arrangement, and so I began living in Cragenmire City.

@Hyzenthlaay here! This dragon is officially a part of the "Around the World in 365 Dergs" challenge. Check out the thread for information and more travelers like this! ...or just read the following:
  • The general idea is that I am going to create 365 unique traveling dragons, send them off into the world, and see what happens. I'm also going to complete mini-challenges along the way using travelers. If that interests you, consider checking the challenge thread out!
  • I don't want to overflood the system with just my dragons, so adopting travelers from me to live in your lair is totally fine! In fact, I'm betting on it. Just let me know.
  • Always feel free to tell me when you have this dragon in your lair! I love hearing updates.
