One of Milo's earliest works, Kanten is as cracked and weathered as her sculptor's ego. Moss adorns her miniature shoulders. Wisdom glitters in her quartz eyes. Her namesake was her inspiration: kanten, a gelatinous confection made from boiled red seaweed. It's a recipe Ocha pulls out when he gets homesick, a treat he silently hands out to everyone who drops by the cafe. The stronger the azduki bean flavor, the deeper his melancholy. It was a tang Milo had never tasted before; the rich, earthy notes quickened his pulse. He bolted for his studio. Twelve hours later, Kanten the statue was born. Of all his pieces, Milo clearly treasures her the most. She can fit in his palm, yet he keeps the entire shelf by the window cleared just for her. "She likes to see out," Milo explains to curious customers. He doesn't know how right he is. In her sculptor's absence, Kanten shakes free from her pose and glides through the open window into the Tabemono woods. Pollen swirls through her clay lungs. Flower heads disappear in her earthen jaws. Kanten's working her way through every bloom in the forest, recording their tastes, textures, and colors. Ramu helps. She brings hybrid strains that Kanten never sees a second time. Milo would give the world to know his creation lives, Kanten knows. She will tell him someday, she's sure; until then, there are so, so many plants to eat ... |
