B I O G R A P H Y
When Ahmed signs up for college, various different emotions are fighting in her chest: Curiosity, excitement. Ever since she was a child, she absorbed one book after the other in countless hours in her mother’s book store. They fueled her fascination with history and times long gone, and at university, she finally would be able to dive deeper into these topics that lie so close to her heart. But there is also fear and insecurity. Ahmed knows that she never was a people person, and her anxiety makes her feel awkward more often than not. The thought alone of a classroom filled with other students is enough to make her heart bump heavily against her ribcage and a knot form in her stomach. It takes a lot of encouragement from her mothers Bea and Josie that Ahmed dares to attend the lectures. Quickly, however, she finds herself amongst kindred spirits that understand and share her passion and love for the subject. To her own surprise and that of her mothers, she joins both the rowing team and the film club after her new friends’ pestering. Both Bea and Josie smile fondly when Ahmed tells them about her day and the new friends she has made. They could not be any prouder of her daughter.

B I O G R A P H Y
On a late afternoon in her first semester, Ahmed finds herself with some unexpected freetime after one of her lectures was canceled on short-notice. With the time being too little to return home, she searches for a place to finish her latest essay. More by chance than on purpose she ends up entering a small café on campus that is much emptier and quieter than the open study rooms. Upon opening the door, Ahmed is wrapped into a variety of wonderful smells that remind her of her mother Josie’s café. The familiar fragrances and the calm atmosphere soothes her anxiety on the spot. From that day on, whenever Ahmed has some time on her hands, she visits the small campus café. She makes sure to go in the calmer hours, when often she is the only visitor in the cozy seating area. It does not take long until Flicker, one of the café’s baristas, recognizes her as a recurring visitor. She chats up Ahmed, at first mostly about the café’s selection of teas, but being persistent, she quickly gets the anxious woman to open up a little. Soon, Flicker has Ahmed’s favorite tea prepared at the perfect temperature when Ahmed enters the café. When no one is waiting in line, Flicker often sits down next to Ahmed, talking to her about the town, the university, and their subjects. Ahmed is intrigued by Flicker’s stories about her original home-town, far away out of state. Flicker tells her about the life in the dorms, about her major in ecology, about her passion for insects and beetles in particular. In turn, Flicker listens when Ahmed gushes about history and her mothers. They become friends and only a few weeks later, Flicker asks Ahmed out on a date in a different café, not knowing it belongs to Ahmed’s mother Josie. Josie, overly excited upon seeing her daughter with a date, makes sure to treat the two guests with extra care and special treats. Bea tries to stop her, with minor success, but eventually, Ahmed and Flicker find some time for themselves. They have their first kiss in front of the illuminated shop window of Bea’s book shop, watched not only by Bea’s cats but also by the two mothers hiding between the bookshelves.

Flicker and Ahmed continue meeting for dates, and eventually become girlfriends. Flicker knows and understands Ahmed’s anxiety and does agree to meet at Josie’s café and Bea’s bookshop, even though the cat hair in the latter makes her eyes water. She will often make special teas for her girlfriend to calm her down whenever Ahmed is stressed out by exams, people, or life in general. Ahmed learns to relax around Flicker and the two of them will often go for long-winded walks in the park or the local zoo. Sometimes, they even go to the movies, although this is a rather rare occurrence due to the large amount of people present. During their college everyday life, they often study together, even though their subjects are vastly different. Flicker will bring tea and self-made treats to these study meetings, and Ahmed loves them deeply, almost as much as the nerd rants that Flicker goes on whenever she encounters an interesting bug. It turns out, after all, that college is nothing Ahmed had to be scared of.
