B I O G R A P H Y xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx “A new recruit walked up to me and said, ‘You’re my hero, everyone in my village looks up to you ever since you helped us chase the bandits away’. I felt warm and proud. Not everything is done for glory, but recognition and appreciation can be the best motivators. They took up the sword I gave them and swung excitedly, ‘One day I will become exactly like you.’ I told them, that they should pay close attention to all our training regimes. After all, I only got here through hard work and immense effort, despite some saying otherwise. A year later, I bid farewell to the same recruit. Sheathed sword, broken promises, and a family waiting for them to come home. The southern frontier was boiling in anticipation of the next attack, the marching of conscripts leaving deep prints along stretches of cold dunes. Tears were shed in the grey rain, while I struggled to remember their name. I said, mere motivation is never enough. If by the end of your tutelage, you are still not up to our standard, then count yourself lucky that your comrades won’t have to clean your corpse off of horse skins.” “A soldier on his way to the royal city tucked his embroidered handkerchief inside his belt, a gift from his wife. He was specifically chosen to be part of the royal guards, and his road was paved with gold and flowers. I told him that he was qualified for the next enlistment. A twinge of worry cast over the boy’s face. I watched him gather his lance and shield in a rushed manner, his right claws clutching the piece of jade with the royal sigil dangling from his neck. Suddenly I understood everything. Only a commoner could consider that sort of arrangement the highest of prestige. He was weak. I could not ask more out of weak men. I let him hold onto his handkerchief, because once the war horn sounds, he won’t even remember where he’ll leave it.” “One of the Fledglings nearly hurt me during practice. She attacked me with a sneaky knife throw, then knocked me over and pointed her dagger at my stomach. Her eyes twinkled in twisted anticipation and triumph. She was beyond skilled, showing off more swiftness and tenacity than I would normally expect from a soldier, but her wily ways were a poor match for me. You would make a great assassin, I said, after prying her off of me like a stubborn insect. I think she’s with the Streaks now; a faceless faction lurking within Torchlight Camp’s hierarchy. Recently heard that she was sent off on a job to an adversarial clan across the border and hasn’t come back yet. A threat to the flight that cannot be exterminated through brutal means. She earns my utmost respect.” “The pen can just be as powerful as the sword, but I have to question you, where lies your greatest loyalty?” |

H I S T O R Y Huỳnh Hỏa was born under the watchful care of her parents and any physician they could employ, for the simple fact that throughout the first few years of her life, she could not breathe for long periods of time. Wrapped tightly within a feathered blanket while gasping for air every waking moment, the young dragon was thought to not be able to pull through. Her father looked after her despite the calls and scorn from the battlefield, while her mother was torn between carrying out her duties and hanging on the flimsy hope that her child would live. As a result, Huỳnh Hỏa’s existence was all but unknown to the dragonlings of Huyền Nghi. Miraculously, after many close calls, Huỳnh Hỏa’s health slowly improved. The day she waddled out of the care room that was so close to being her final view, her battle-hardened mother wept with joy. Slowly and steadily, the dragon started to adjust, picking up martial arts books and expressing her desire to follow her mother’s footsteps, eyes twinkling with stories about the General’s glorious victories. After receiving her respiratory aid mask, Huỳnh Hỏa began the process of putting her physical exertion to the test. The extent of Huỳnh Hỏa’s illness, as well as what she had gone through to get to that point, was not well-known when she took up the role of Squad leader. Her promotion stirred up quite a controversy, with many not considering her worthy of the title and many more accusing her mother of favouritism. Due to a combination of outside pressure and inner pride, Huỳnh Hỏa challenged her sect-mates to overthrow her via one-on-one battles, despite her mother advising her not to. Throughout the next several months, the number of challengers began dwindling, while Huỳnh Hỏa’s herb-filled mask became more intricate and indispensable. Those close to the Masters said that after every fight, they would find her hunched over in her private room with bloody knuckles, screaming for them to turn a blind eye. Aside from those initial tumults, after everything had been settled and with more Squad leaders being added to the mix, the Clouddancer Division eventually fell fully under Huỳnh Hỏa’s guidance. She is a good leader, and her combat skills are widely considered unmatched, but not everyone is on board with the way she teaches those below her. Most of the time, new recruits are put off by her harshness and irascibility. Many would argue, though, that while her cutthroat attitude and unbridled loyalty to the royal military are not meant for the dragon population’s well-being, it is precisely what this nation as a whole direly needs. |
