A Tale of Stars Read

I watch Reiko as she settles for her starsong, gilded wings folded neatly as she brings about the end of the day. She may be a Cursed Tenko, but the gold along the edge of her wings always brings a smile to my face. I'd seen it, long ago, dancing above our temple. Yes, the stars that sang for her when she was a kit did go dark for a short time, but even now I can see some of them glittering like golden flecks in a dark river running through the mountainside.

I always love listening to her song, heralding dusk with those bell-like tones. Sometimes I wonder if she took the beauty of the peafowl and somehow wove it's beauty into her voice. She was a Night Shiro to look up to, despite her now cursed nature among the Tenko. Personally, I still look up to her, despite being her elder. My voice may be a decent match, but I still feel as though it isn't quite right for the role Reiko takes among the Kitsune. Besides, with my sight, I'd never have fit as the keeper of the Shattered Temple.

I turn my gaze away from Reiko, my tails swishing softly as I watch the stars slowly wink back at me from the murk above. It's a clear night tonight, one of the best nights to encounter in my opinion. I smile as I spot the small cluster of stars set in a little swirl, just like the swirl on my forehead. My mother had told me it was a sign of my beauty. My father simply said it was a sign I was truly tied to the stars. Personally, I believe both. I always thought Tenko hold a sort of beauty about them, even those who find themselves cursed. As for the stars... well I was the only kit in my litter who said the stars sang. They thought I meant the Night Shiro of our temple at first.

Well, they thought wrong.

As Reiko's song comes to a close, I turn my gaze to the glittering, golden stars above her, flickering back at her as I watch. I'm the only one who can hear them singing back to her, echoing her song in a mixture of high-pitched, loving tones to soft, sorrowful notes. I swear some lament her curse each night, while others encourage her to earn her golden wings once more, to match them in the sky. Some would think each star to have a voice to match their age, yet it simply isn't true. Some carry the note of an elder when I saw them flicker to life only ten years ago, while others carry the very same bounce of youth they had when I first saw them as a kit. Each voice is unique, and yet they sing in harmony when it comes to young Reiko.

As the kitsune below begin to head about their nightly routine, I begin mine. I always like taking flight as Reiko's song is returned to her in kind. I spread my wings, just as I'd done on my first flight, and take off, a small puff of snow being the only thing showing where I'd been moments before. I focus on that song as I fly, soon finding myself soaring above the treetops as I watch the stars above. I twist and turn, weaving myself about the different chords of their song, my eyes alight as I watch them sing.

Then it happens. A discordant note rings out, shattering the remnants of Reiko's song. My eyes, half-lidded only moments before, fly open as I try to find the source. Which one is it? Which star is breaking the harmony of this beautiful night? It isn't always necessarily a bad thing, but this particular note is familiar to me, and has always brought trouble in the wake of it's song. Sure enough, there among Reiko's stars, is a faded silver shard, singing that one discordant note. Unlike the other warm tones of those stars, this silver shred of a star is cold, icy, and sharp, like a blade, or a claw slicing through the dark silk of the night. I have a name for this star, all based on the first time I heard it sing all those years ago.

The Ashen Star.

I know the severity of this star, of it's song, and have already angled my wings to change my path. I scan the trees below, my ears tilting to listen to that note of alarm. I need to find the source, to find what this star is singing to before it responds. Then, as I spy my tormented cursed kin hiding in a tree with the Wraith, I hear it. Faint, distant, but it sends a shiver down my spine. Another discordant note, far away in the sky above. I'm about to try and find the new star when I hear it again.

Another note.

And another.

And another still.

I feel my ears tilt back, my eyes wide with alarm as I finally see them. New stars, silver and cold just like the Ashen Star, and just as loud as the first I'd heard. They sing in concert, drowning out Reiko's song like the icy shriek of battle. This isn't a prophecy of your average Ashen making a move against our home. This is different. This is worse.

I change my motive, scanning the Temple below for a familiar face. Then I spot her. The one who sings every twilight, her dark wings gilded with her former glory. Reiko is talking with a regular Tenko, Satoru, apparently discussing something of import if I can judge by the faint sway of their tails. I always hate to interrupt when she's talking to another Tenko, but this prophecy is of great import to our home.

My arrival is difficult to miss, my large wings dwarfing the two Tenko where they sit. My raised hackles easily cut their conversation short, their faint smiles fading when they see the expression on my face. Satoru moves back, dipping his head to Reiko. He's as wise as his name suggests, knowing it is her place to address the kitsune who live, work, and thrive in her care, including myself.

"Miyako, what troubles you so? What has intruded on your own nightly ritual of dancing among the stars?"

I can hear the edge of concern in her voice as she speaks. She always takes that tone when any of us are troubled, even if she's younger than us. She was like that when she bore my name, when her wings were gold. When I was Veila, before she gave me her name upon seeing me after my trials. It takes me a moment to catch my breath, but when I do, the news I bring causes Reiko's eyes to widen with shock.

"The Ashen Star. It sang tonight, just as it did when the Ashen struck our home."

She opens her maw to speak, while Satoru cuts her off, speaking of how we have patrols ready to head out already. How we are safe, and have no need to worry. How I have no need to worry. Reiko cuts him off instead with a sharp bark.

"Satoru. You do not understand how her prophecies work. That star is not a sign. It's a herald."

She turns back to me, waiting to hear what I discovered from it's song. What would this harsh cry bring? What would befall our home? What must we prepare for? I can hardly manage to say the words myself, but I know what must be said. What we must prepare for.

"It sang, and many stars replied in kind. Stars linked with silver threads. Ashen ties."

Satoru seems to think I'm being ridiculous, though I'm not done. He shakes his head, suggesting it might be a pack of Ashen then. Not just one. Kitsune have fought many before, and our population has grown since the attack that left our guildmasters cursed. Surely we can handle a pack, or even a hoard! We just need to prepare. Then I say it. As he talks about how we can simply warn our patrols to stay sharp, I hiss it out in a low, frightened whisper.

"Not a hoard, nor a pack, nor even something touched by the Ashen walking amongst us. Reiko... an Ashen Emperor has risen, and while it may be far, it moves for our home as we speak."

Satoru is stunned into silence as Reiko stares. He looks like he cannot believe it. He never did live through an Ashen Emperor. However, Reiko knows me. She knows I do not speak lies, and that my prophecies have always come to pass. This one is no different. In that song, I heard the roar of an Ashen Emperor reply to our herald, our Ashen Star. It has risen, and it's coming for us. Finally, she replies.

"Satoru, find Akemi the Foxfire. We must stop her before she flies for her rounds. Tell her to find other couriers to spread the word with her. An Ashen Emperor has risen, and the Shattered Temple calls for aid to put this beast to rest. I will gather our patrol to face it before it strikes us."

As Satoru leaves, clearly uneasy judging by his wisps darting about, Reiko gives me a kind, soft look. Not as if she's pitying me, but as if she's thankful for my warning, for what I've seen. Her words reflect the sentiment. However, they are not the words I expected to hear.

"Thank you, Miyako. For being the Tenko I was raised to be."

Before I can respond, she flies off, her light shining bright behind her as she searches for her patrol to face this new foe. As she leaves, the night falls silent once more. Only the echoes of the Ashen Star remain for me to hear, as well as the creatures who thrive in the night. It takes quite some time for me to leave for a quiet corner in the ruins of the place I called home as a kit, curling up into my tails. As I try to get some rest, I remind myself of who I am, if only for comfort.

I am Miyako, a Void Tenko who was given her name not by her parents, but by her younger cursed friend when she finally passed her test to become a Tenko. I find magic in the air, and listen as it responds to the stars above, causing the stars to sing to me as I fly. I listen, I interpret, and I tell others what I hear when the need arises. I've never been wrong before, but tonight, as the echoes of the Ashen Emperor's star cluster ring in my ears to haunt my dreams, I can only hope that this time, this one time, I am mistaken.

Void Tenko

These foxes have reached their 1,000 year and are at the height of their power. It takes a very long time for a dragon-kitsune to reach this level and their strength is rightly feared and respected. These ancient nine-tails are even said to have the power to visit the dead. Kitsune who find themselves with a longing for stars and sky often become Void Tenko. These kitsune prefer small groups are typically quiet by nature. Their long dark bodies often shimmer with colors of stars and nebulae - they are often considered to be some of the most beautiful. Unlike their kin, Void Tenko have the largest wings and can fly longer and higher than any other variant. They also have larger lungs, allowing them to hold their breath for long periods of time and fly at those high altitudes. As such, they have difficulty at lower altitudes and so often spend their time in high mountain woods or mountain tops, by rivers, springs and lakes.
