“My parents always said that I was too prone to daydreaming when I was young. I was often immersed in the tiniest details of the world around me, from the mysteries hidden behind intricate engravings, to the strategies by which each vine was placed on the temple walls. They were concerned whenever they found me sitting motionlessly in front of a stone stele, only the motion of my chest visible. On the rare occasions when I would not return to whatever I was doing, they would yell at me. Then they’d scold me, and sob in frustration. I was a bad kid - so I thought.”

“But that was when I was a child. I’ve grown up since then, and have put my imagination to good use. Well, good is relative. I wouldn’t call covering for and patching up the mess my brother left behind was far from an ideal job opportunity, but when I first started out it was hard to be picky. Soon I moved on to designing small temples, then living quarters for the wealthy, and then the roof of a governmental building. Every single time I would hear them ask me about my brother.”

“I am not a miracle worker. Every piece of stone I set down, every tile I carved, every statue I commissioned, could not be anything more than stones, tiles, statues. It could not hide any magical inner workings, or traps, or secret weapons. My confinement within the realm of my reality shouldn’t have been a problem had my brother not entangled himself with the Chen family’s servant.”

“Sometimes I wonder if I was part of the reason why he became the way he is. Our traveler’s lifestyle did not permit him to form any meaningful friendship. He was chatty, with wisdom and knowledge that could not be contained within his mind, while I, most of the time, drifted into my own silent fantasies. He would complain about how boring I was out of frustration. Regardless, we were closer than you would think, and he would take me to places in the city. He would sigh and pout whenever I stood still a bit longer than he’d like, of course, but out of all the times we squeezed our way through crowded markets, or snooped around newly erected pagodas, we were happy.”

“There are days while replacing bricks and reinstalling stone steps, I find myself missing him, just as I miss my parents and my lone house that finally could stand still in one spot. After years of silence, now he swings by my place frequently, playing the role of a good big brother he once forgot. But then he would leave so quickly. Just like so many others in my life. And I can’t even force myself to escape into my own sanctuary, what with the world around me still in relentless motion.”

H I S T O R Y

Giai Nghi came to the Occulus after her family had relocated multiple times, chasing trading opportunity after trading opportunity. Soon, they settled down in the prestigious and well-established county just as their reputation grew due to their son’s spectacular talent. It should not take one too long to envision what it must have felt like as the younger child, still grasping with her own callow ambition and flights of imagination.

The girl was engrossed in her own research, her fascination with structures and architecture placing her on meandering journeys around temples and squares. Meanwhile, her teenage older brother was being tasked with implementing a never-before-seen automated contraption for a wealthy noble family, spending a great chunk of his time under said family’s roof. Giai Nghi had stopped there multiple times, greatly annoyed at the time-consuming and haphazard way her brother was working the flooring. For a long while, she’d already had an inkling that as talented as she was, her rugged preoccupation would never measure up to the likes of a mechanic prodigy.

So when Uy Lâm abruptly left, the Chen family frantically searched for someone to finish his half-done implementation. Naturally, they sought out the boy’s sister. Giai Nghi was just as disoriented as the grieving family due to Uy Lâm’s departure, yet she had to take over his job and fix all of his unfinished commissioned traps scattered all over Kim City. Her work was undoubtedly impressive, as she would incorporate her knowledge of design and materials to create clever fortifications, but the people wanted more. They wanted machines.

With this in mind, Giai Nghi set out to look for her brother. At first, her goal was just to drag him home and give him a good scolding, but that didn’t come to fruition. According to some Earthsong House disciples, they had never seen such anger coming from an initially soft-spoken and well-mannered girl upon hearing about her brother’s little stunt. She agreed to study at the Sect, agreeing to redesign the Thuja Terrace in the meantime. Throughout her time there, she had tremendously helped design, renovate, and reinforce various buildings. Her style of construction - robust yet elegant, with lots of details, engravings, and sculptures - could be found scattered all over Huyền Nghi. Now, having moved her non-dragon parents to a village nearby, she reigns over the very Terrace she helped build, with little interest in going back to Kim City. Or to Jadebolt Manor where her brother lives, for that matter.
