Do you believe in fate?

Lightning doesn't come from the sky. It comes from his eyes.

when otaktay first falls from the royal guard, he almost expects them to cut off his wings. to mar him forever like a fallen angel discarded from the gods themselves. the pain level is similar, he thinks, and losing his placement from leadership to outcast feels of a punishment stronger than a god could dole out. maybe he deserves it, but maybe it’s not his fault, right? maybe they deserved it. maybe they did.

its justification, he tells himself, when he takes their wings. it hurt him, isn’t it fair to do the same unto them? he threw his childhood away for stories of high rank and gold armour, left his friends so he could follow the king from five paces away. this is justification for all the things he’s done for his “friends” in high places. this is justification for them. this is justification for himself. this is karma. none of this is his fault.

mikado comes from high guard and gold armour. if he wasn’t stationed for the royal guard, it’s possible he would have been stationed for her family, a hired fighter for a different rich wrongdoer. but when she tells him that they would be equals, that she is no longer a high-ranking official of a high-ranking family, that she threw all that away, he doesn’t charge at her like he normally would. he believes her. he forgets the strength of her claws at his thin throat, and lets her words placate him. before otaktay registers what he’s doing, he’s following her, five paces behind. but as, well, as equals, surely?

- Brought into mikado’s inner circle when he is caught by her familiar.
- Fond of taxidermy, a pleasure which he never was able to fully enjoy until he met mikado. Under her
rule, he is protected by a force greater than moral enforcement.

It’s midnight now, and the moon hides behind thick clouds. The wind is dead. silent. A figure wanders between rows of tombstones, wings catching small glints of light, though it isn’t enough to make him clearly noticeable. the grave he stops at is random enough- only buried for less than a year, a fae who lived a decent life and suprisingly passed of sickness in an otherwise common existence. A day worker, a single male who was looking for a mate but had no real ties. Siblings grown into their own lives, parents long forgotten. It is a perfect place to harvest a new set of claws.

Okatey places his claws under the soft slip of grass, rolls it up and begins digging.

He brushes her hair back, lays in a little fan-like pattern, and covers her body with dirt. Layers leaves and brush in crisscrossing random patterns, places evergreen to cover her scent. Goes to the river that flows not 5 taillengths away, and washes the fae claws he had taken from a grave three months prior. Pockets them in an ashwood box marked with a death-date. Untraceable weapons, just in case someone gets too curious of the small body behind him. He looks to the sky, feels a prickling at his neck. His gaze sharpens, and he slowly looks down as if casually enjoying the scenery.
He locks eyes with a small hare across the water.
