B I O G R A P H Y xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx “Triêu Nhật, as a fellow esteemed scholar and once candidate for the imperial court, you must occasionally reminisce about going to the City to attend the examination. The Grand City was nearer to your place than mine, so you must not have to tread through miles of muddy, swampy groves, or weather your body in a bumpy carriage across empty fields where not even a sparrow could be found. You must not even have caught yourself digging through the trash for anything to use as pen and paper, for being raised by a dragon meant you probably had everything you could ask for.” “I never had the same privilege, yet I persevered. The people in my village did not like me - a story so old you’ve probably heard it a thousand times already. But I’ll admit I was luckier than most. All it took for me to be accepted were a few measures that many now consider drastic or disproportionate. It only hurt a little bit. And guess what, I aced the examination. I placed second on the honour roll. It was a magnificent enough feat that the villagers turned their attitude around completely, welcoming me with flags and flowers. The carriage I rode on that day was adorned with gold; the people kowtowed deeply as I passed, not daring to look up at me, as if in the presence of an all-mighty deity.” “Then… I never found out what happened. I never grasped the extent of what exactly you dragons pulled to convince the imperial administration to dismiss me. All I know is that just before I set out to receive my position as governor, your sư huynh came to see me, asking me if I could join Huyền Nghi. I refused because, frankly, the thought of getting myself involved in some occult and mystical tomfoolery was not all that appealing. I wanted to live a normal life contributing to my nation, and that was what I set out to do. Until the Grand Chancellor sent me a letter denying my position not three days later.” “Why is it that the idea of choosing the life that one wants is so appalling to you dragons? Has it ever occurred to you that so many of those hatchlings gather around you simply because they have nowhere else to go? I have somewhere to go. I was an inch away from achieving my dreams. Yet they were torn away from me, for reasons I don’t even have the dignity to know.” “But, in a way, I think I get it now. I thought about this on my way to the AAcademy, riding my carriage made of bones. It was so much more comfortable than anything else I have mounted. The Archives may find a better use for my powers than the imperial government ever could, so that’s where I decided to deposit my talent. At this point, it is hard for me to care about this country anymore. What good will would a leader so easily swayed by the words of commoners have towards a subject they have cruelly cast away?” |

H I S T O R Y I received the biography scroll directly from Lĩnh Vân’s hand, her bone army surrounding my house like I’m some kind of dangerous criminal. In any case, I feel like I should clarify a few sensitive details about her history that I didn’t feel convenient revealing to her. Lĩnh Vân is absolutely right about her remote village not liking her. Hailing from a - frankly speaking - rather poorly educated corner of the flight, she did not receive any kind of love one may extend to a normal child. However, her villagers’ hatred towards her ran deeper than that. When she was still a toddler, all the adults who knew her, including her parents, collectively wrote a letter to the imperial government asking to exterminate her. I guess that’s better than silently killing the child, all things considered. As she grew up, Lĩnh Vân became resentful of her Diviner nature. So resentful that she attempted to get rid of her deformed scales and horns in the most brutal way a kid her age could manage. She also broke into a nearby town’s bookstore, stealing all the essential books - an act that I will not condemn, considering her situation. What I find worrying, however, is also what Đại sư huynh was concerned about, and precisely what he sought her out for. No one truly knows where she learned her bone-manipulating skills, but by the time she applied for the imperial examination, she was able to terrorize an entire town with her magic. What followed was… not something I can confidently say was morally upright in the purest sense of the word. It is true that Đại sư huynh did pull some strings to knock her off her position, but I believe had he not intervened, things would for sure turn awry for the government as a result of favouring such an unpredictable official. And what he said might not have been all that exaggerated. He relayed to the Grand Chancellor the fact that Lĩnh Vân had exhibited dark tendencies in her abilities, and that she would be better off under Huyền Nghi’s supervision. I, too, maintain that had she accepted Đại sư huynh’s proposal and become a Heaven Sect member, her skills would have been fully utilized, dodgy bone magic notwithstanding. We all agreed to keep all this information from Lĩnh Vân. After all, and despite what she has been trying to deny, she is still one of us. She shares our pain and trauma of being an outcast, and therefore, the less she should know about the twists and turns behind her journey, the better. However, what I am primarily worried about right now is that she might harbour a grudge towards us, towards Huyền Nghi or the government in some way. Still, I hold my ground that we never did anything wrong, and if she really is working with Nhược Thủy, then she is conclusively beyond saving. |

____Lĩnh Vân is often seen riding into battle on her bone snake, around her are five hoops made from bone that she can use to throw, roll, and control her skeletal companions with. The hoops aren’t bladed, yet carry an immense amount of magical energy.W E A P O N S K I L L S ____Transcendental Marrow: Throws two hoops towards an ally, which cause bone fragments on the ground to surround them, granting osteopathic effects and a temporary armour. ____Earthshaking Divine Technique: Close to semi-close combat using all five of her bone hoops. A set of martial arts techniques that are more effective in defense and wearing down her opponent than offence, but impressive to execute nonetheless. |
