Spire squinted at the pile on the floor, heaving with what appeared to be breath even though it was shaped like nothing living he’d ever seen. “Guys, I don’t think this is a… a, uh…” Falco came to land beside Spire and with one look, drew back with a revolted gag. “What in Glade’s name is that thing?” Spire didn’t get to answer, even though he had no answer. The sticky clump of leathery skin and skeletal structure opened an eye. An Arcane eye. It was a dragon. “Ah, rot!” Falco flared his wings to lift him away with his curse. “Kill it!” “It’s a dragon, wisphead.” Spire crept closer, knowing he was right even as he hoped he was wrong. He could now see a pair of red wings bent and tucked behind whatever was growing from where a ribcage might have been. Strange pores covered its back and its head looked like it had the skin of a mushroom instead of… well, whatever it was. “Hey, are you…? What are you?” The Arcane eye beheld him silently for so long Spire wondered if it could speak. Then it did. “A dragon. Please don’t mind my condition. I’m fine.” “Fine, my foot,” Falco spat, still batting his wings as though about to fly away in a hurry. Spire squinted at Falco for a moment before turning back to the dragon on the floor. “He’s out of line, but he’s right. You don’t look good. Do you need any help?” Once more the eerie eye opened, and Spire got his bearings on the orientation of the face. It almost looked upside-down, but there was nothing right about this dragon. “Oh?” it said, and its voice was definitely smiling. “Are you offering?” |
Cassateia takes after her father, Cordyline Mendmeadow, an apothecary–and quite a good one. She was always confident in her calling to be a healer, and in her ability to be the best one her clan had ever seen. Though it’s debatable whether she succeeded in that, she certainly was a wonderful healer. Eventually, she grew tired of the challenges offered by her own small clan and wanted to heal the world. She left her home-clan’s land of Wind for the land of her hatching with grand designs. She could heal the world. Dragons are by design and necessity plagued by any number of illnesses, some more severe than others. Some are visited upon clans purposefully by malignant Plague dragons looking to test their magic. Some are more natural, springing from the Wyrmwound on their own or developing in Sornieth’s flora and fauna without interference by the plans of dragons. Cassateia spent years and years studying them all. After what some of her colleagues said was “too few years,” she thought she saw something no one else did. All the plagues had something in common. She showed her colleagues and they agreed there was something there. She threw herself into the development of a magical cure, backed by some Arcane dragons also in the same area of study. Nothing could match their excitement at the possibility of curing literally everything. Doubtless some of the Arcane dragons were eager to strike a decisive blow against their neighboring Plague dragons, but most had pure motives to rid the world of pain and suffering that illness brings. Cassateia was among those. No one was more eager than Cassateia to see her creation come into widespread use, but there was something wrong… She realized her colleagues were not as dedicated to progress as she was. They wanted more testing, and she wanted more results. They were stalling for “safety,” and meanwhile Cassateia raged inside. Dragons and Beasts were dying of plagues and diseases that could be easily cured. As a demonstration of her confidence and proof of her design, she gave herself the cure. Only then did she believe something was wrong… Cassateia has irreversibly changed her body and blood with the “cure” she thought was Sornieth’s salvation. Though she lives in the strictest sense, her cure, an amalgamation of Arcane and Plague magic designed to make dragons immune to the diseases she researched, didn’t quite do what she thought it would. She abandoned her colleagues out of embarrassment and set to curing the disease she gave herself, this time looking for more natural means rather than the magic that got her into this mess in the first place. She travels the world, still looking for subjects to help her test her cures, and still hopes that she will find something to undo what she’s done because she thought she knew all there was to know. |

MORGAN - doctor
» Though dragons have any number of nicknames for her long name, her name is pronounced “cass-ah-tay-uh,” and it’s the only name she introduces herself with. She shares her surname with her father.
