This meadow was empty just yesterday. The bright green of the grass under the wind-ridden sky occupied only by sunshine flowers was a pristine scene fit for paintings and poems. Today, though, a dozen and more tents and the footsteps of dragons crush the natural setting beneath their bustle. Flags the color of baked terracotta and bamboo fly from the tallest of the tents, banners mark the entrance and hang proudly off dragons’ wings. This is the Tempest Chase camp.

Most dragons walking back in forth wear armor or carry weapons. Iron spikes supplement claws and plates guard delicate wing webbing. Some are tradesdragons, engaged in the arts and crafts that keep the company running. Blacksmiths barter with miners; dungeoncrawlers haggle with foragers. Still other dragons are clients: well-dressed with sacks of treasure and other valuables to trade for convenience.

Any problem can be fixed for the right price.

The world of Sornieth is a dangerous place filled with dangerous creatures. Flocks of Talonok descend on the unwary; herds of Centaurs chase down the slow and the weak. Rabid serpentas destroy herds of cerdae. Even dragons, if the prize is worth the trouble, can be dissuaded or defeated.

For the moment, though, the dragons are packing. Their work here is done: a pack of diseased gale wolves ravaging the area has been culled. With time, the land will return to its balance and the wolves will raise strong pups. Another contract has come in from a clan in Light Flight to help defend their territory against marauding Centaurs. Work never runs dry.

The meadow is empty again: the nomadic monster hunters have moved on to their next job. The bent grass shows where they’ve stepped, the singular howl of the gales is haunted by their whirlwind journey into the territory. They’ll be back.

The Tempest Chase goes wherever the Wind takes them, from Ice, to Earth, to Light, and back. After all, there will always be conflicts to resolve, systems to put into balance, new or old. There will always be monsters to kill, dragons to fight, and Emperors to depose.

They’ll be back. Assuming the coin is good enough.

This, of course, means that dragons can have extremely long lifespans. At the beginning of 2020, my oldest dragons were almost 2000 years old. Dragons are universally physically mature at thirty years old, though many breeds take as little as fifteen years. Regardless of breed, dragons are considered young adults for approximately fifty years. Dragons less than twenty-five are often considered children, though most dragons will either strike out on their own or choose new clans before this age. In addition, dragons live a very long time and, as such, will have very large immediate families eventually. All children (except where the children’s lore directly contradicts my own, such as describing parents that are clearly not my dragons, for example) are canon. This doesn’t come up, really, though. Guardian. Most Guardians choose their Charge. The Guardian sometimes unknowingly thinks something worthy, but most Guardians are not surprised by their Charge. If there’s such a thing as responsibility, Wander doesn’t know what it is. Like the Windsinger, his patron god, he seems more interested in the places he can go, things he can do, rather than where and what he should do. All the same, he has a well-meaning heart, even if not the follow-through that goodness so often requires. Even at the very young age of seven, a young Empyrea knew her Charge: hatchlings. Together, though they were little more than hatchlings themselves, the two collected and raised outcast and unwanted hatchlings, sending them into the world none the worse for their care… though, admittedly, little better for it, too. Very few hatchlings deigned to stick around longer than necessary. Empyrea offered what nurturing influence she could even though she is to this day primarily a fighter and defender. Perhaps that is where little Lightning, one of the hatchlings Wander raised, inherited it… or perhaps it is something inborn in most Guardians that only needs the slightest encouragement to emerge. Whatever the case, Wander and Empyrea liked to send out their foundlings in pairs, to keep each other safe company. Lightning and Hydra were two such dragons, bonded together since they were both very young (Hydra seven years older than her companion). In fact, Lightning never felt the call to the Search, deciding very early on that Hydra was a worthy Charge. At the age of twenty-two and sixteen, the two left Wander and Empyrea’s care, and traveled the world on their own. A Lifetime In the three-hundred years that followed, Lightning and Hydra amused themselves by wandering all over Sornieth. It was the typical life of a Wind dragon, staying with friendly clans and dragons along the way and learning the skills necessary for survival. They even made some lasting friendships along the way that would give them more in return than they could have imagined. They met a young Eos, the tavern-keeper at a popular courier stop on the Steppes. She was only just over one-hundred years old, but happily settled in her home far from her native Light. They stayed in a friendly clan ruled by Guardian siblings Magnificent and Gentle. Also visiting their kingdom at the time was a young Imperial researcher named Aroer, young and bright-eyed for the future ahead of him. Nothing much of interest happened to Lightning and Hydra, otherwise. They learned the tricks of surviving on their own, driven mostly by Hydra’s instinct to beat the environment and become as strong as she could. The two became adept at hunting on their own and made some of their coin doing just that. Most of the time, though, they hunted for themselves and didn’t give other dragons a second thought as they passed by. At just over four-hundred years old, they were still young. As normally happens to Wind dragons constantly on the move, they were usually tired, hungry, and covered in dust when they saw the flicker of a distant fire. They’d come upon the Estate of Escape, a plot of land owned by a wealthy Light clan. The two dragons that kept the estate, Moor and Heather, made their own improvements and directed themselves as they kept the estate for their distant employers. To bring in extra treasure for themselves, they ran a small bed and breakfast. Lightning and Hydra stopped for the night, thankful for a roof over their heads for the night. To pay for their room and board, they agreed to cull an invasive species of needletooth. Another dragon, intrigued by the idea of dragons offering their hunting expertise to get where they wanted to go, offered to help. Though he wasn’t talkative, they learned his name was Soren and he was an expert in Plague/Wind battle tactics. While Lightning and Hydra focused on the task at hand, Soren’s mind was far ahead of them. Their efforts bought a few days of rest at Moor and Heather’s bed and breakfast, giving Soren time to pitch an idea. He wasn’t one for talking to dragons he didn’t already know, but the last thing he wanted to do was continue to participate in Dominance efforts for the territory war between Wind and Plague. He was making good treasure, to be sure, but it wasn’t enough. He could see life with Lightning and Hydra being very lucrative, indeed. And Hydra in particular was always interested in something lucrative. Though their association was understood by Lightning and Hydra to be a short-term arrangement, Soren had designs for bigger things. Lightning was personable and strong, Hydra was practical and ruthless, and he was conniving even if he was nothing else (though, granted, he was powerful in Plague magic). They agreed to travel together for a time and did for almost a year, practicing fighting together and projecting the image of capable fighters. Eventually, after being asked by more than one adventurer to join their little crew, the three realized this could very well be the rest of their lives. They also realized they would need help. [br] Good and Civilized Period Overview: Most of the dragons that came and went that year weren’t exactly the steady type. They came and went almost as fast as they could be paid. It was well enough, too; the dragons that joined weren’t much for rules. Therefore, Soren was the first to jump at the sight of the outcast prince from Lightning Flight and his somewhat overbearing organization. They’d also take on a medic (because every fighting group probably needs one) and had dragons traveling and fighting with them unofficially for some time. Even though he was only one-hundred forty-three years old, Cek was already as humorless as if he were no less than three-thousand. All the same, his less-than-sunny personality and inborn Lightning drive was exactly what Soren was looking for. Cek wrote up mercenary contracts and gave them more legitimacy than Lightning, Hydra, and Soren combined could have thought or hoped for. Soon enough, they’d signed on many young dragons looking for money and adventure. They grew close, and their standard company, dragons that didn’t come and go with the change in contracts and dry spells, grew at a sustainable pace. Over the next two years, they added a permanent Medic, a young but wily familiar tamer named Kurth, and a spy and grifter named Celtine. More dragons left than stayed during that period, though some eventually returned for more work later, like Valkyrie the Yeti-hunter and Aroer the Emperor researcher. Despite their otherwise good relationships with these dragons, they never stayed for longer than a few months. The Tempest Chase, for that’s what they started calling themselves, couldn’t hold onto members, money, or enough resources to support more than a few dragons. But that didn’t matter. They were beginning to feel like a clan. When Kurth joined, he was a bright-eyed fourteen-year-old. By the time the Tempest Chase was able to attract and keep their next permanent members, he was almost two-hundred-fifty. The two founding members of the Tempest Chase were in their mid-700s when an epiphany came along. Over the interim two-hundred years, they’d added a fiesty (if not accident prone) Mirror and his young mate Nadia, and a fledgling Ridgeback alchemist. As sometimes happens with two dragons together, two more very young dragons were added to the Tempest Chase. In fact, Merle and Abbey were the first dragons to join the Chase from hatchling. A few more dragons, odds and ends mostly, joined the Chase. Another medic, this one born from Plague, started tagging along. A writer joined up, writing about the meager adventures for less coin than the paper it was written on was worth. A large black-and-white Guardian named Brine joined, but he was always more interested in building than destroying. When the Chase couldn’t help her with her problems, a princess from Arcane Territory simply joined instead with the aim of becoming a diplomat. Moor and Heather of the Estate of Escape sent both dragons and business their way. Most notably, the two sent their grandson, Lorne, their way, along with his business. As part of his Search, he took a job escorting and protecting a band of Tundra scientists on their expeditions searching for Second Age artifacts. Even though these Tundras didn’t really want to start employing the Tempest Chase instead of their long-time compatriot, the concept certainly sparked some ideas. Family Tragedy The Tempest Chase raced back to the Estate of Escape at an uncharastic urgent message from Moor and Heather. Their daughter, Imperata, had been killed. Though the evidence wasn’t complete, the consensus landed on a nearby flock of Talonok. A frenzy of fear rippled across the Steppes, leading a few of the neighboring dragons to hire the Chase for protection for a short time. The nearby rancher, Dusty, was one of these. In the next few years, the Tempest Chase (and the Estate of Escape) saw some few joys and victories to mitigate their loss. The Tempest Chase accepted the application of a young blacksmith named Vain and his young mate, Lilwen. Though she wasn’t interested in hunting, she made herself useful in other ways. She started caring for the youngest members of the Tempest Chase, including an infant Falco. Over the next hundred years, the Tempest Chase took more work fighting against Beastclans, though they did fight perhaps more than their share of Dragons as well. They rescued enslaved Dragons, welcomed distant family members, accepted new hunters, and even inducted a few Beastclan individuals into their ranks. It was clear to some members of the Chase that an upheaval of some kind was well on its way, and there was little to nothing they could do about it. They prepared for this phantom feeling, driven mostly by their two oracles. They did the best they could to prepare, bringing in as many fighters as they could and trying their best to become economically self-sufficient. Other families crossed paths with their own: an Imperial looking for a cure for his mind-sick brother, and one of their perpetual client’s daughter arrived after the tragic passing of her mother. Life carried out its own little dramas, as friends were made, trusts were built, and enemies were plotted against. The Chase accepted all these changes, happy for the breathing room before the foretold disaster. If it was a disaster. Visions are never as clear as we want them to be. Only 305 years later, the moment they’d been waiting for arrived. [br] Awakening The Tempest Chase, like the rest of Sornieth, was shaken by the surge of elemental power that touched everything in sight. Along with new power and energy for dragons, elemental beasts rose up from the depths and crawled out of unknown caverns. Along with a surge in elemental powers, the Chase saw a surge in coin cross their claws. Clans everywhere were in a panic as monsters came from nowhere intent on destruction. Most clans weren’t prepared to deal with it, and the Chase was more than happy to charge for their services as a small mercenary army. Dragons displaced by beasts and clans in turmoil poured into the Chase’s ranks just when the fighters needed them. It became much more impossible for the Chase as a whole to handle every contract, and the Chase began to split into pieces to handle the load. Still ever under the watchful eyes of Lightning, Hydra, Soren, and Cek, the Chase was now a proper clan. Their tents, when set up, spread far and their market moved goods and currency. Time went on, and it seemed eventually like nothing would ever get better. But, at least for the moment, it wasn’t getting worse. The Tidelord, the dragon god of Water, had been missing now some twenty years. In the interim period, dragons of all kinds remain in a shadowy unease and ancient monsters and dragons they’d forgotten rise from Ice and Fire. Eventually, many dragons lost faith in the gods’ ability to protect them and returned to their homes to take care of themselves. The Chase lost over twenty dragons and were unable to replace them with steady members for almost 300 years. The Chase seems to be running further and faster than their wings can take them. Sometime soon, it’s clear they’ll run out of resources and energy. Lightning and Hydra approach 2000 years at a steady pace, beginning to consider the path for their future, uncertain as it is. They no longer fight and brawl like they used to, consumed almost entirely with training new recruits and keeping their clan running. As all things do, it’s grown tiresome. As with powerful monsters that need to be destroyed or neutralized, powerful dragons have also come across the Chase as benevolent or neutral parties. The children of godlike dragons have made places for themselves. Enemies of these powers have also slipped in, unnoticed; some of these enemies come even from within the Chase itself. And, of course, that monster in the back of every dragon’s mind, lurking in every dark shadow, the opponent of the dragon gods itself, the Shade might even be rising in power thanks to additional magic upon which to feed. All the gods together barely defeated it the first time--what will they do if the wars continue and the Tidelord never returns? These are uncertain times, and the only thing certain is that it’s bound to continue.

History

Most stories have a beginning, middle, and end. Our story begins with a few young dragons looking for something better to do with their time than scrape for food and shelter. It ends with a crazy idea that blossomed into the thriving mercenary company you see today. Perhaps you’d like to join our story; perhaps you’d just like to learn more about us. Whatever the case, you’ve come to the right place.

Lore Notes
Each day in our world is the equivalent of one year to a dragon.

Gembond. Dragons with the disease Gembond are either genetically afflicted or bitten by the Onyx Cobra.

Prologue

Period Overview:
6933749_350.png

The Tempest Chase can trace its beginnings to a Spiral named Wander and his Guardian Mate Empyrea.

A Lifetime
7482931_350.png

In the three-hundred years that followed, Lightning and Hydra amused themselves by wandering all over Sornieth.

Good and Civilized

Period Overview:
15188028_350.png

Most of the dragons that came and went that year weren’t exactly the steady type.

Family Tragedy

The Tempest Chase raced back to the Estate of Escape at an uncharastic urgent message from Moor and Heather.

The Tempest Chase, like the rest of Sornieth, was shaken by the surge of elemental power that touched everything in sight. These are uncertain times, and the only thing certain is that it’s bound to continue.

Hunters who have been with the Chase for less than six months or who do not have any references within the Chase are Probationary Hunters. Colloquially, other Hunters call these dragons “Kids” or “Smalls.” Even if a dragon manages to stay with the Chase for longer than six months successfully, they will likely retain the nickname until the next Probationary Hunter.

 6. The Chase may not take contracts including, but not limited to, the following categories: those for the life of an individual Dragon, Beast, or other sapient creature (murder or assassination). Any Dragon or Beast found to be filling these contracts shall be expelled immediately unless higher punishment is warranted.
 7. The Chase is not a democracy; it is a business. Members with a problem with Leadership are welcome to take those problems either to their direct superior or to Leadership itself.
 8. Any Dragon under Chase employment may leave at any time without notice. Any Dragon who leaves the Chase employment shall return anything not purchased by the dragon and shall meet with Cek to settle and final dues by either party.
 9. Contracts shall be distributed first by client preference and second by the Chase according to skills and experience required. Every attempt shall be made to distribute contracts in an equitable manner. Members of the Chase who are dissatisfied with contract dispersal may take concerns to their direct superior.
 10. Fraternization between members of the Chase is permitted, though developing relationships may require restructuring organization and contract dispersal.
 11. Hatchlings are to be cared for by the resident hatchling overseer. If such is not available, other arrangements must be made. The Chase is not responsible for injury to hatchlings. Hatchling care is perpetually available in the Estate of Escape.
 12. Dragons and sapient Beasts are not to be killed for sport or tormented. Captured sapients are to be treated with respect. Circumstances may necessitate a lengthy stay with the Warden.
 13. Non-sapient creatures are not to be killed for sport or tormented. Injured creatures will be treated with respect and, if possible, handed over to the resident familiar docent for care and rehabilitation. The Chase is not responsible, however, to give problem creatures anything other than a fast and painless death as is possible.
 14. Long-term clients are subject to the same bylaws as members, excepting those laws dealing with contract dispersal. Any conflict or dissatisfaction with the Chase must be taken to Cek.
 15. Long-term contracts may be canceled at any time with a two-week notice. Any contract canceled without notice shall be subject to a cancellation fee.
 16. New laws may be proposed by any member of the Chase. These laws may be instituted at Leadership meetings to take place the fifteen days following each Mistral Jamboree following a vote of Leadership and Group Leads.
 17. Additional Leadership meetings may be called as needed.

Should you agree to uphold the laws previously outlined, please assign your mark to the following line:

Tempest Chase Ranking

The Tempest Chase Mercenary Company (herein “the Chase”) is a group of dragons and Beasts organized around the goal of seeking and destroying threats to dragons, their allies, and their possessions. There is a strict hierarchy in the Chase, though movement between ranks in the hierarchy is permitted and encouraged to each dragon or Beast’s ability.

windmidsmall.png
Leadership
The Chase Leadership are the dragons that collectively decide on Chase-wide contracts and bylaws. They periodically join on smaller group actions, though these dragons shall be required to treat Group Leads as superior on these actions should they decide to participate in group actions, unless the Leadership also be acting as Group Lead on that action.

The members of Chase Leadership have the title of Commander, though not all of them use that title. Hydra, for example, prefers the title of Lieutenant to differentiate her role from Lightning’s. The Chase has four Commanders at this time, though only two regularly participate in actions.

The Chase Leadership is as follows:

7482931.png - - -Lightning Windchaser- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Lightning, without a doubt the most charismatic of the three leaders of the Tempest Chase, was also most of the brawn in their early days. She currently travels with the Chase full-time and trains recruits.

Associations: Leadership, Windchaser Family

7343533.png - - -Hydra Rotrock- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

It’s fortunate for Hydra that she’s always with Lightning: she’s difficult to deal with in the best of times. Her insistence and stern countenance is renowned in the Chase. She currently travels with the Chase full-time and trains Group Leads.

Associations: Leadership, Rotrock Family

14837188.png - - -Soren Sternevil- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

As the Chase’s tactician, Soren has a claw on most contracts that come in to help decide whether it’s an advantageous opportunity. He currently travels with the Chase full-time, screening applicants and coordinating group tactics.

Associations: Leadership

15188028.png - - -Cek Reckworks- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

As the Chase’s curator, Cek is the first contact for applicants and clients. He orients new members and mediates disputes between clients and the Chase. Cek travels with the Chase full-time and almost single-handedly heads recruitment on the road.

Associations: Leadership, Reckworks Family

windmidsmall.png
Group Leads
This group of warriors is one constantly changing for promotions, stepping down, and leaving. These dragons are put in charge of a small groups headed out to fill contracts, and usually have either been with the Chase for a while or have experience as mercenary fighters.

The Chase Group Leads are as follows:

26114809.png - - -Abbey Longhouse- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Abbey is the leader of a group of raiders, and the first group lead the Tempest Chase had. Though her group was originally comprised solely of her brother and a constantly-rotating dragon as the Chase grew and shrunk, it now boasts a membership of four or five dragons depending on the season.

Associations: Abbey’s Raiders, Longhouse Family

34119196.png - - -Falco Skyclaw- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Another Chase-born dragon, Falco has always had a love and aptitude for flight. As such, he’s the group lead for a group of dragons that solely focuses on fighting in the air. He’s the most headstrong of the Group Leads, but he’d do anything for his team, and they know it.

Associations: Skyclaws Group

50088085.png - - -Tael Serenitybreeze- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Tael is the daughter of the late leader of another clan and as such has the propensity and ability to take charge. Even though she is an outsider, Lightning has taken a shine to her particularly. Some dragons, including Lightning’s children, wonder if Lightning has designs for Tael to one day take charge of the Chase.

Associations: Tael’s Hunters, Clan of the Dawn Breeze (formerly), Serenitybreeze Family

windmidsmall.png
Other Ranks
Generally, all other dragons possess the rank of “Hunter” for simplicity purposes. Hunters do, however, come in a multitude of types. Some hunters specialize: for example, the Chase has employed more than one expert in Raptorik tactics over the course of its existence.

The Tempest Chase
Membership
windbottom.png
The Tempest Chase has seen its ranks grow and shrink over time. Most dragons fulfil a role, and most dragons work for others outside of the Tempest Chase on contract. There are dragons that fight, dragons that protect, and dragons that destroy. There are also a few beasts (mostly Serthis) in the Chase ranks that can be hired as well.
windmid.png
Hunters
The Tempest Chase Hunters are any dragon whose primary responsibility is hunting and fighting monsters. These monsters can be anything from berserk Mantarunes to an infestation of Rocs. Infrequently they will join in on wars between Dragon clans or between Beastclans and Dragons. Which side they fight for depends entirely on which side paid more.

The following Dragons and Beasts are Hunters with the Tempest Chase.

The Tempest Chase
Amenities
windbottom.png
Not all dragons in the Chase are engaged in martial professions. We also have dragons that buy, sell, and create. Our blacksmiths are, of course, excellent with weapons, and our local merchants deal in the best monster materials. We also have many dragons to keep our treasure and items organized.
windmid.png
Craftsdragons
Over time, the Tempest Chase realized that they would have to start producing more than monster materials in order to stay afloat. They can also provide quite a comfortable living with the number of contracts they can fill. As such, they have attracted the services of many fine craftsdragons, most of which provide their services to members at a steep discount.

Chenek is the home-bound son of Skjold and a tanner. He makes sure that any fur or pelts the Chase manages to keep intact make it back to the merchants in one (impeccable) piece. 40824267.png

Chrys was once a towering malachite statue of a Guardian that somehow gained a life of its own. He makes a living now as a jeweler, working closely with Vain, the blacksmith. 34497326.png

Mab first traveled to Wind territory with her brother Zimri to set up an outpost for their clan in Lightning. She works for the Chase as an enchanter. 56146369.png

Vain is the blacksmith employed by the Tempest Chase. He has a special deal with the leadership wherein he will repair any member’s weapon for free and create new ones for a nominal fee, provided the materials required to make it. 33406927.png

Valiant is a mapmaker that travels with the Tempest Chase. She is also one of four rulers of a small clan that sometimes hires or houses the Chase. 39194399.png

Iacchus is the local alchemist for the Chase. He says he studied the craft with Baldwin himself, but it seems doubtful. He’s also brash and adventurous, having turned himself from a Ridgeback into a Bogsneak without thinking too much of the consequences. 25008881.png

Services
Other dragons provide more services for value than creation of items. These dragons can be commissioned by members of the Chase for a discount, or sometimes at the Chase’s expense, depending on what the service is. These dragons either travel with the Chase full-time, live at the Chase’s home base at the Estate of Escape, or show up often enough that they may as well be traveling with the Chase.

Almedha is a writer that tags along with the Tempest Chase. She usually writes the stories of their hunts and the histories of any important happenings, but she can be commissioned for a modest price to write other things, as well. 27567108.png

Faelen has been the long-time courier for the Tempest Chase, though he’s not really a member of the clan since he’s not often traveling in the same direction as they are. He has many friends all over Sornieth, and one that lives at the Chase’s home in the Steppes. 9546350.png

Jack is the undertaker that travels with the Tempest Chase. Unfortunately, the Tempest Chase very often surrounded by death and destruction, and Jack ensures that Dragons and Beasts alike are treated with respect. 40592354.png

JJ is a negotiator that travels with the Chase full-time. He is well-versed in the standard laws and practices of most Beastclans and is a quick-study when it comes to dragon culture and law systems. He often accompanies Cek when making contracts with entire clans. 53690370.png

Kurth travels with the Tempest Chase to rehabilitate any animals that he can. He also trains animals to help members with their various tasks. 18806310.png

Lilwen is the hatchling caretaker that travels with the Chase full-time. She makes sure that the hatchlings in her care are raised to be respectful and independent. Nearly all hatchlings to the Chase have been raised by her since she joined. 33603128.png

Nemmerle is the magic teacher the Chase employs for its members and hatchlings. Even though he is only able to perform Light magic, he has studied all eleven main practices of magic in Sornieth. He is also very wise for his age. 39597236.png

Symphonia is a singer employed by the Chase. She is quite good and very creative, organizing regular activities for the Hunters to relax, socialize, and forget the pressure of their routine life-and-death situations. 34318283.png

Nadia is a signal flyer for the Tempest Chase. She is responsible for directing dragons coming in for a landing as well as flying various kites to communicate weather conditions and other messages to nearby clans and dragons. 25382001.png
