Estera’s panic had been replaced by a dark brooding. An acceptance of the worst kind. A sort of determination unknown before. Shiloh wished there was something she could do, but she’d said that a dozen times. There was nothing she could do to get Estera’s pearl back. It was gone. It may have been destroyed. There was nothing she could do. Instead, she sighed and prodded, “Where are you going…?” “To find him.” Okay, maybe she hadn’t accepted it. “He’s not coming back.” “Good. I’m not bringing him back.” Estera flung a wrap of fabric into her bag, a flippant toss for a few pieces of jewelry. A sack of money. Shiloh sighed again. “Then what?” “I’m going to kill him.” “What?” Shiloh didn’t mean such an explosive reaction. Estera wasn’t thinking clearly, and who could blame her? “Estera━how are you going to do that? You’ve never been outside the clan! How are you going to find him━how are you going to survive?” “I don’t know, but I’ll figure it out.” Estera didn’t seem phased by the perfectly reasonable questions. Because she wasn’t even close to reasonable. “You don’t have to understand. Or agree.” She turned to Shiloh. “But I’d like you to…” Shiloh felt her heart soften at the look in Estera’s light eyes. “I do understand…” she whispered. “And I hope you find him. I hope you break his pearl.” “Oh, I will.” Estera sighed in a growl, an unsettling manner for her. “I will.” |

Estera was a lovely young Pearlcatcher with romantic ideals. Though she was shy, she had everything she ever wanted. The last thing she wanted to accomplish was finding a nice Pearlcatcher to settle down with. She wanted a family of her own, and she thought she’d won the lottery when she met Pallis. Pallis was charming. Responsible. Friendly. Good with hatchlings. Looking back, he may have been too good to be true. He tricked her so thoroughly, she didn’t believe he’d fleeced her and stolen her pearl for three days after he was gone. After a period of mourning, Estera vowed revenge. She’d get her pearl back or die trying. And, if at all possible, she’d kill Pallis to get it. She was a small Pearlcatcher and her family were royalty, not fighters. But she would get it back. She packed up her things (her sister, Shiloh, following with just as heavy a heart), and set out to find out just how. Some dragons just don’t care why a dragon wants to become dangerous. Some might arch an eyebrow at interest in weapons or poison. Others eagerly share their knowledge. The first thing Estera did was hire an assassin. The second thing she did was ask him to teach her. But, as everyone knows, there’s not a lot of money in revenge. She ended up a hunter with the Tempest Chase, though she hadn’t quite gotten the hang of eliminating monsters. Anything was practice for Pallis’s eventual demise. Once she was a weak and demure Pearlcatcher. That’s no longer true. Shiloh believes Estera will never find Pallis, or, at least, she hopes someone else does first. Estera is plagued by nightmares since losing her pearl, and things worse than nightmares. Who knows what will happen once she has her plan completed on her conscience? Shiloh knows (and, indeed, understands) that Estera will stop at nothing to get her pearl back, and she fears the pearl is already gone. Estera is no longer shy; she’s fearless. She’s no longer lonely; she’s determined. After all, what’s the worst that could happen? |

Estera doesn’t have a familiar, at least not in waking Sornieth. In her dreams, in her nightmares, a creature made of all her lost memories follows her over the surreal landscape. It doesn’t seem to be malevolent, though. It just follows her, oozing about like a lizard of black mucus that will never become a pearl. Dismayed, ashamed, angry, and afraid. She has not told anyone about this creature or what it represents, but, in all honesty, she’s become used to it. Unlike her pearl, it seems to always be there in her dreams, no matter what she dreams. Her nightmares, no one could steal from her. |

Estera was young and naive. Pallis was attractive and charming. She was ready to leave her whole family behind to follow him wherever he wanted to go. She thought they would be together always and, in a way, they would be. After tricking her into trusting him, he ran with her pearl, his trophy. She never saw him or her pearl again. She was inconsolable, for more reason than one. Estera doesn’t know where Pallis is now, but one thing is certain: she’ll never stop looking. The depths of his betrayal cannot be understated, and her hatred measures up only to the love she once felt. |

For a very long time, Estera’s sister Shiloh was her only friend and confidant. Estera was shy, and the only dragon outside of her family betrayed her in the worst possible way. Shiloh is a different dragon thanks to Pallis, as well. Filled with righteous anger, she has dedicated her life to getting her sister’s back. She doesn’t approve of Estera’s methods: after all, death is a little more permanent than a stolen pearl. Nevertheless, she agrees that Pallis has to be punished. It’s been so long, she doesn’t quite care how anymore. All she wants is a bit of her old life back, a bit of her old sister back. |

She no longer considers herself whole, and will not take a new surname until she gets her pearl back. » » Solely to fit in with other Pearlcatchers, Estera follows the ritual of dragons who were not always Pearlcatchers. She has made a new pearl, though it means little to nothing to her. The center is constructed from a tuft of fur from the edges of the cloak Pallis wore, and she doesn’t bother to keep it shiny or smooth. |
